Boston University was always my dream, but when it came to making the decision, I had to be sure that I was confident in my choice. Boston University drew me in for several reasons—its perfect location in the heart of Boston, its strong education programs, and the comfortable community. One special thing that set Boston University apart from my other college options was that I could be placed in the classroom to experience teaching in my freshman year. I had wanted to be a teacher for as long as I could remember, after all.
After just six short weeks, I was absolutely confident that I made the right choice to attend Boston University. At Boston University, I attended an education program—ED 100.Each Wednesday, I went to Bowman Elementary School to help in a fifth grade classroom.
Although I was a secondary education major, working with fifth graders was very memorable. One of my weekly tasks was to lead a reading group of about five students. It was tiring, but I fully enjoyed getting to know their strengths (长处) and a little bit about each student apart from their studies.
As the weeks went on, I found myself further involved in (参与) more classroom activities, often helping students one by one or in small groups. The students never stopped amazing me — they were always ready to take part in class activities and share their ideas. For each class, I usually spent a long time preparing it. I also loved learning from other teachers, and taking note of their excellent teaching skills, some of which I hoped to use in my own classroom.
The program—ED 100 has even farther confirmed (确认) my desire to become an educator. I have passion to work with children. I can't wait to have my own classroom of students. I'm so happy that I've made the right decision to choose Boston University.

A.They were very active in class.
B.They always tried to surprise her.
C.They helped her gain new teaching skills.
D.They showed a talent for studying languages.

A.The Key to a Popular Teacher
B.The Value of School Education
C.Boston University: My Favorite University
D.ED 100: My First Teaching Experience in the Classroom

Pigs may be more intelligent than people thought, as shown in a study where pigs used a joystick (操纵杆) and played a video game. Researchers used 2 year old Panepinto micro pigs called Ebony and Ivory, as well as Hamlet and Omelet, 3 month old Yorkshire pigs. Researchers first taught these pigs how to play with a joystick, teaching them the word, “joystick”. Next, on the words “watch the screen”, they learned how to watch targets(目标) on the screen. Of course, praise was given to the active pigs winning a game.
During the experiment, all pigs performed well. As they became more successful, the level of difficulty increased, just like in human video games! At first, the pigs had to hit a three walled target which was then reduced to two walls and then one wall.
All pigs did well with the three walled targets; however, the Panepinto pigs performed better on the more difficult levels. One disadvantage for the Yorkshire pigs was that they simply grew so large that they could no longer fit in their test. After a few months, Omelet and Hamlet were taken away from the experiment.
Dr. Candace Croney, a leading animal behavior scientist in Cambridge, said, “The findings of the study are important because what we do to pigs matters to them. It would be nice for people to realize how special pigs are, and how much more intelligent they may be than we recognized. The researchers said that the pigs' actions were deliberate (故意的). This led them to believe that pigs were able to successfully do new tasks.
“It may encourage other researchers to use touch screens and computer technology to study pigs intelligence in the future,” Croney said. The team hopes this type of research will make people pay more attention to this farm animal and show people how they can change the lives of animals.
28.What did the researchers do to the pigs at the beginning
A.They studied their habits.
B.They gave them enough food.
C.They gave them special names.
D.They trained them to play a game.
29.What could we find about the pigs in the experiment
A.They could keep focused for a long time.
B.They tried hard to win the games for praise.
C.They did all the tasks without any difficulty.
D.They got harder tasks as their performance improved.
30.What made Omelet and Hamlet unsuitable for the experiment later
A.Their intelligence. B.Their body size. C.Their power. D.Their weight.
31.What is Croney's attitude towards the results of the study
A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Uncertain D.Surprised.

Bogre Udell, who speaks four languages, met Frederico Andrade, who speaks five, at the Parsons New School in New York City. In 2014, they started a project to make the first public records of every language in the world. They've already recorded more than 350 languages, and plan to hit 1,000 in the coming years.
“When humans lose a language, we also lose greater diversity (多样化) in art and traditions,” said Bogre Udell. Between 1950 and 2010, 230 languages disappeared. Today, a third of the world's languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers left. Every two weeks a language dies with its last speaker, and 50 to 90 percent of them are said to disappear by the next century.
Wikitongues has asked for volunteers in 40 countries to film native speakers talking in the past, present, and future tenses of their mother languages. Native speakers are asked to recall childhood, share their stories, and discuss their hopes and goals. One volunteer in the South Pacific islands of Vanuatu recorded a language that had never been studied by language experts before. Another volunteer found a speaker of Ainu, a language in Japan that has no relation to any other known language, and he also recorded it. However, priceless recording opportunities disappear regularly. Not long ago, one of the last two speakers of a Saami language in the Russian steppes died right before his recording session with Wikitongues.
A lack of protection and globalization are responsible for diminishing language diversity. For much of the 20th century, governments across the world forced some local people to use official languages. More than 100 languages in Australia have disappeared since European settlers arrived. However, most languages die today because of other factors; climate change and urbanization contribute (是……的原因之一) greatly to the disappearance of languages.
32.What do Bogre Udell and Frederico Andrade want to do together
A.Test people's language levels. B.Offer language courses to people.
C.Find out the reasons for language loss. D.Record all the languages in the world.
33.What does the author point out in Paragraph 2
A.Language loss is becoming very serious.
B.Few people arc worried about language loss.
C.Language loss makes it difficult for people to communicate.
D.Some countries fail to slow down the process of language loss.
34.How do volunteers help protect languages
A.By writing down native speakers' stories.
B.By learning languages from native speakers.
C.By improving the living conditions of native speakers.
D.By videoing native speakers talking in their languages.
35.What does the underlined word “diminishing” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Creating. B.Valuing. C.Decreasing. D.Encouraging.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
During a vacation one year, my mom and I left our home. We went on a two week trip to the countryside where my mother had grown up. I was excited because I couldn't wait to see my grandparents. The last time I had visited them was when I was only three years old. I also wished to go sightseeing, ride elephants, and do many more things there. They must be very wonderful.
With great wishes, we arrived at my grandparents' house in the countryside. During the first several days, I stayed in their house for fun. But soon, I got bored. I wondered what adventures were in store for me. One morning I said to my mom, “I really want to go outside to play,” My mom replied, “Stephanie, today we're going to a school. The children there are studying in poor conditions. I decided to use some of my own money to buy some school supplies (日用品) for them.” Hearing that, I was a bit unhappy. “We can go out and play another day. Today we need to spend a little time helping these poor children,” Mom added. I had no choice but to agree.
A few minutes later, my mom drove me to the school. On the way, she said, “We'd first visit the school to know what kind of things these children want most. Then we'll try to buy them.” I thought to myself: what a vacation I am having! I come here to go sightseeing, not do charity (慈善) work.
When we reached the school, I just couldn't believe my eyes. There was only one small building, which looked as if it were a hundred years old. There was no playground, no parking lot ... It was so small; the school I went to back home was a million times bigger. How unlucky the children here were! We met a teacher in the school, and my mom told him the purpose of our visit. The teacher was very glad and thanked us.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。

There are so many expressions in American English that sound good but actually are not.
“Face the music” is a good example. When someone says they have to face the music, it does not mean they are going to a musical show or a concert. To “face the music” means accepting the bad results of a behaviour.
Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the keys and says, “Thanks so much for watching my car while I'm away. But please do not drive it. It is a very fast car and you are not on the insurance (保险).” But you do not listen. You want to show it to some friends and pretend (假装) the car is yours. So, you drive it around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. The damage is serious. When your friend returns, you must tell her what you have done and “face the music”. The “music” here is the result of your behaviour. It could be losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. Whatever the music is, you must face it.
There are other American expressions that mean the same as “face the music”.
“Take your medicine” means accepting the results of something bad you have done. And if someone says, “You made your bed. Now lie in it.” He means you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results, or as we say in American spoken English, you must deal with it!
“Pay the piper” also means the same as “face the music”. But, that expression has its own very interesting beginning. We will talk about that in the next Words and Their Stories.
1.What's the main idea of this passage
A.To invite a friend to go to a musical performance.
B.To tell people how to deal with a bad situation.
C.To give people a lesson on an action.
D.To introduce some expressions.
2.Which action belongs to “take your medicine”?
A.You broke the traffic rules and caused an accident.
B.You worked hard but failed in the exam.
C.You caught a cold and took some medicine.
D.You moved to a new city and lost touch with your old friends.
3.Which of the following expressions doesn't have the same meaning with the others
A.Face the music.
B.Take your medicine.
C.Make your bed.
D.Pay the piper.
4.The next programme may talk about ________.
A.other words and their stories
B.the beginning of “pay the piper”
C.the wider use of “face the music”
D.an example of “take your medicine”

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所). I suggested that they should stay at “bed and breakfast” houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
“We didn't stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.”
I thought this was odd. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays”, because the Spanish word for “holidays” is “vacaciones”. So they did not go to the house where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to the house where the sign said “NO VACANCIES”, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word “DIVERSION” means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No, thank you”.
5.My Spanish friends wanted advice about ________.
A.driving their car on English roads
B.going to England by car
C.finding places to stay in England
D.learning English
6.I suggested that they stay at “bed and breakfast” houses because ________.
A.it would be much cheaper than staying in hotels
B.it would be convenient for them to have dinner
C.they would be able to practice their English
D.there would be no problem in finding accommodation there
7.“NO VACANCIES” in English means ________.
A.free rooms
B.no free rooms
C.not away on holiday
D.holidays
8.When someone offered me more coffee and I said “Thank you” in French, I ________.
A.wanted him/her to take the coffee pot away
B.didn't really want any more coffee
C.wanted to express my politeness
D.really wanted some more coffee

But when they say five years, they probably mean that they studied the language for only a couple of hours a week over that entire time period. __3__—if you want to learn a new language successfully, you're going to have to study the language every day.
Carry a dictionary at all times.
Carrying a dictionary with you will serve you a lot of time. __4__ It can be an actual, physical dictionary, or a dictionary app on your phone—you just need to be able to consult it quickly whenever you need a word.
Watch, listen, read and write in your chosen language.
Possibly the easiest thing you can do is watch television shows or movies in the language you are trying to learn. __5__ Besides, download podcasts or tunes into radio stations in your new language. This is a great way to immerse yourself in the language while you're on the go.
A.Let's get one thing clear.
B.There are really no secrets.

D.Connect with a native speaker.

【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文,介绍了美式英语中许多听起来很好,但其实真实含义并非如此的表达。
1.答案与解析:D 主旨大意题。根据首段“There are so many expressions in American English that sound good but actually are not.”可知,文章主要介绍了美式英语中许多听起来很好,但其实真实含义并非如此的表达。故本文主要介绍了一些表达。
2.答案与解析:A 推理判断题。根据第五段中“‘Take your medicine’ means accepting the results of something bad you have done.”可知,“take your medicine”的意思是接受你所做的坏事的结果。四个选项所给的例子 A.You broke the traffic rules and caused an accident. (你违反了交通规则,造成了事故。)和“take your medicine”的意思相符; B.You worked hard but failed in the exam. (你努力学习但考试不及格。); C.You caught a cold and took some medicine. (你感冒了,吃了些药。); D.You moved to a new city and lost touch with your old friends. (你搬到了新城市,失去了跟老朋友的联系。)。都不能说是做的坏事,都和“take your medicine”的意思不符。
3.答案与解析:C 细节理解题。文中对四个选项的意思分别进行了解释,“pay the piper”和“take your medicine”都是“face the music”的同义短语,意思是接受自己的(不好的)行为的(不好的)结果,根据第五段中“You made your bed. Now lie in it.” He means you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results, or as we say in American spoken English, you must deal with it!可知,“make your bed”的意思是制造了一个糟糕的局面,所以“make your bed”与其他几个短语意思不同。
4.答案与解析:B 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段主要叙述的是“pay the piper”这个短语有一个很有意思的开端并根据最后一句“We will talk about that in the next Words and Their Stories.”可知,下一个节目要讲的是“pay the piper”的开端。
B
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。讲述了由于语言的差异而导致误解的故事。
5.答案与解析:C 细节理解题。根据第一段中“Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所).” 可知,作者的西班牙朋友想要关于如何在英格兰找住处的建议。
6.答案与解析:C 细节理解题。根据第一段中“... because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family.”可知,作者建议他的西班牙朋友住“住宿加早餐”的房子是因为这是个很好的锻炼他们的英语的机会。
7.答案与解析:B 细节理解题。根据第三段中So they did not go to the house where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. 可知,在英语中“VACANCIES”意思是“有空的房间”,因此“NO VACANCIES”在英语中意思是“没有空的房间”。
8.答案与解析:D 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said ‘Thank you’ in French. I meant that I would like some more.”可知,作者想再要些咖啡。
Ⅴ.
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文,如何学习一门新语言的建议。
1.答案与解析:B 根据下文“You just need to be willing to work hard and not be afraid to make mistakes.”可知学习语言没有什么秘密可言。
2.答案与解析:D 根据第二段中的“The best way to learn a new language is to speak it.”和“Speaking with a real, live person will help you to feel much more motivated about learning the language than staring at a book or computer screen.”可知学习一门新语言最好的方式就是和说母语的人进行交流。
3.答案与解析:A 根据上文“But when they say five years, they probably mean that they studied the language for only a couple of hours a week over that entire time period.”以及下文if you want to learn a new language successfully, you're going to have to study the language every day. 此处表示强调, “让我们弄清楚一件事”。
4.答案与解析:C C项中的one指代上文“Carrying a dictionary with you will serve you a lot of time.”中的a dictionary。
5.答案与解析:G 根据本段小标题Watch, listen, read and write in your chosen language. 可知学习语言需要看、听、读和写。上文“Possibly the easiest thing you can do is watch television shows or movies in the language you are trying to learn.”提到了“看”, 从下文“Besides, download podcasts or tunes into radio stations in your new language.”中的podcasts 和 radio stations可以看出是“听”, 所以空格处应该是谈论“读和写”。

No one is sure where and when the expression “apple pie order” began. It's said that the housewives of New England liked to cut their apples in pieces. Then they filled pie pans with them in an organised way,row upon row. As one writer said, the women of New England loved to have everything in its place. This perhaps explains why it is generally believed that “apple pie order” began in New England.
Another old expression, “apple of discord”, comes from an ancient myth (神话), however. The myth says that all the gods and goddesses were sitting around the table to celebrate the marriage of Thetis and Peleus. One of the goddesses—Eris was a troublemaker. She threw a golden apple on the table to be given as a prize to the most beautiful goddess. It was not an easy decision to make. How could they choose among Hera, Athena and Aphrodite Paris was given the task of deciding. He decided to give the golden apple to Aphrodite. Hera and Athena were very angry and threatened him. This, the myth says, began the long Trojan War.
At one time, the tomato was called a love apple. That was a mistake. In the sixteenth century, the Spanish brought the tomato from South America. The Spanish then sold the tomato to Morocco. Italian traders carried it on to Italy. The Italian name for the tomato was “pomo di Moro”—apple of the Moors. When French growers brought it in from Italy, they thought “di Moro” meant “d'amour”—the French word for love. And so “pomo di Moro” became the apple of love.
People believe many things about the apple. One belief is that it has great power of keeping people healthy. A very common expression is “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”
Another belief is based on facts. The expression is “One rotten apple spoils the barrel.” When an apple begins to go bad, it ruins all the other apples around it in the box. The expression has come to mean that one bad person in a group can cause everyone to act badly.
5.What do we know about the phrase “apple pie order”?
A.It began in New England.
B.Nobody's sure where and when it began.
C.Everyone is sure where it began.
D.It has been put into use recently.
6.What's the meaning of “apple of discord”?
A.Cause of disagreement.
B.Situation of danger.
C.Everything in agreement.
D.Everything in good order.

A.To show us a mistaken idea.
B.To tell us a love story about apple.
C.To explain how the tomato was called the apple of love.
D.To show how the tomato was brought in from South America.
8.Which of the following expressions is about health
