My school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden where there was once only a vacant lot.It was a lot of work but it was all worth it.I got blisters (水疱) from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.
I learned a lot about gardening and teamwork, and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had done. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our garden, because many schools planted gardens.
The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie (大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had been to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them.We did not water the garden, but we did weed it.We decided to let nature water it with rain, because that was how prairies grew in the past.We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students.
As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. The reporter interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, the headmaster interviewed us, and explained to him what we had learned through this project.
That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us.We were famous. All that__work,__all those blisters, it was worth it.We knew that when we saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.

C.They were uninterested.
D.They were worried.

Grown ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since.A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away.He can play, catch and hit a ball as well as his son.A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows:Once we have learned something, additional learning experiences increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them.We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables (乘法口诀表) are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming (突击学习) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course.By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned.A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development.
28.What's the main idea of Paragraph 1
A.Stories for children are easy to remember.
B.Children have a better memory than grown ups.
C.Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
D.People remember well what they learned in childhood.

A.a result of overlearning
B.a special case of cramming
C.a skill to deal with math problems
D.a basic step towards advanced studies
31.What is the author's opinion on cramming
A.It leads to failure in college exams.
B.It's helpful only in a limited way.
C.It's possible to result in poor memory.
D.It increases students' learning interest.
D
The future home is something that people have talked about for decades. Because the future home idea inspires our imagination, scientists and engineers have been working hard to develop different systems to make houses “smarter”.
The video camera at the entrance recognizes visitors using facial recognition software. The facial recognition software of the future home will not only recognize friends, but strangers as well. And the software in your future home will run the strangers' faces against a database of criminals.
The future home will also have smart appliances (家电) as well. There will be a vast networking system connecting them. Ovens, microwaves and refrigerators will be controlled automatically (自动地), so remote cooking will be a possibility and meals are prepared for your arrival.
There will also be green systems in place such as saving and reusing wash water and bath water. Plants and people may receive pure or mineralized drinking water.
If you think this future home idea is pie in the sky or science fiction, then think again. Most of the systems described here are either in development or already out at the market. Future homes may not be__standard__yet for the middle class but this isn't as far ahead as many people would think.
32.What can the facial recognition software be used for in future homes
A.Greeting friends.
B.Collecting visitors' information.
C.Recognizing visitors.
D.Following dangerous criminals.
33.Which of the following indicates the future house is environment friendly
A.Facial recognition software.
B.Remote cooking.
C.Smart refrigerators.
D.Saving and reusing water.
34.What does the underlined word “standard” in the last paragraph mean
A.Attractive. B.Common. C.Special. D.Excellent.
35.What is the best title for the passage
A.Smart Future Home
B.A Smart Networking System
C.Software in Future Home
D.Various Household Appliances

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I went out to have lunch this morning to meet an old friend. We made a date in a small and peaceful restaurant. We hadn't seen each other for some time. So I was looking forward to it, and thought it would be a lovely lunch and a wonderful conversation. I dressed myself in my favorite dress and did my hair up. Everything seemed perfect.
When my old friend and I were seated, we first ordered our meal. But there seemed to be something wrong with the lady who took our order. Her expression was horrible and she said rudely, “What's your order?” “A dish of fish and some rice”, I told her our order in a gentle voice. She took my order and gave me the same unfriendly attitude as she had given to others.
The woman's bad attitude made me uncomfortable. Considering that I didn't want anything to destroy the happy moods that we had, I didn't say anything else.
As my friend and I were having our meal and talking about the things that happened before, my mind didn't focus on our talking. I just noticed the lady's behaviors to other customers. She was not in a good mood and she got into a fight with a customer but I didn't know why.
When it came to my turn to approach her, I thought to myself, “What can I do here to make her mood changed and make her smile?” And I didn't want her attitude to spoil the whole warm atmosphere in this small peaceful restaurant.
Surely there must be something I could sincerely compliment (赞扬) her on. Then there it was and I knew instantly. I said to her, “Madam, I don't know what made you so unhappy, but I know that you must have the most incredibly well spoken and clear voice. It is so good. Like incredibly good.” That was what I could compliment her on.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
When she heard what I had said, her whole face lit up.

When I was a high school student, mathematics looked like a big barrier for me and several of my classmates. When we reached the ninth class, we got Mr Iyer, a strict math teacher who was also our class teacher. He always stuck to his discipline. We had to arrive on time, pay undivided attention to his lectures, and dared not to neglect any of his homework.
Even so, as our class teacher, we got to know him better. Noticing some of us fidgeting one day as the mid term exams approached, he stopped solving a mathematical problem to ask us why. “There's too much to do,” we sighed. “We're afraid we'll never manage to finish our revision before the exam.”“Nothing is impossible,” Mr Iyer told us. “This classroom is on the second floor. Do you have a problem reaching here?” We reacted with blank stares.
“No, you don't!” he said, answering his own question. “You have a staircase to help you climb up to this level. No one expects you to make it in two giant leaps. You simply take one step at a time. Any task can be solved if you focus on the immediate action to be taken. The rest will take care of itself, if you keep at it. One step at a time. That's the secret.” Then he wrote down an old motto on the blackboard—the longest journey starts with a single step. Having heard his staircase analogy(比拟), we understood why he asked us the question and we saw him in a new light.
Most of my classmates scored distinctions in maths. And I went on to become an English teacher. To this day, whenever I pass on Mr Iyer's invaluable advice to my own students, they brighten up at the prospect of a lighter academic burden.

It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad for the vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let's find out more about going back to school.
Most teachers kick__off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about what you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class.
When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Pay close attention so you'll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting the restroom.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day. But it's a great day to make new friends, so try to say “hello” to the kids you know and the new ones that you don't. Make the first move and you'll be glad about what you did and so will your new friends!
Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by the second or third morning, they'll have mapped out a seating plan. It's a good idea to write down where your seat is in your notebook so you don't forget.
Here are a few final tips for a fantastic (奇异的) first day: Get enough sleep; Have a healthy breakfast; Try your best; Develop good work habits, like writing down your assignments (作业) and handing in your homework on time; Take your time with schoolwork; If you don't understand something, ask the teacher.
5.In the second paragraph the underlined phrase “kick off” most probably means “________”.
A.jump over B.startC.talk about D.finish
6.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.All students feel excited about a new term.
B.All teachers let students pick their seats.
C.New school worries do not last very long.
D.Being hard working helps make new friends.
7.If students have any questions, it's suggested that they should ________.
A.turn to their teachers
B.write them down
C.ask their parents
D.help with each other
8.What's the author's purpose in writing this passage
A.To offer students some advice on starting a new school term.
B.To encourage students to work harder in a new school term.
C.To remind children of the importance of starting school.
D.To introduce a way to improve students' learning ability.

In high school I was very shy, content to hang around with my small group of friends and concentrate on my courses. I was quickly regarded as a “brain”. I did so well that by the end of the senior year I had perfect grades and enough credits to give up an entire quarter of coursework.
But in early June of the senior year, the principal called me into his office. He asked me to give a speech at graduation. I gaped (目瞪口呆地凝视) at him, my heart thumping. This was the reward for my hard work I mumbled something and fled the office, blaming myself for staying away from physics, a subject sure to have ruined my perfect record.
I finally agreed to a compromise. I would share the honor with five other students. And my friend Judy would then give her own, full length speech.
Graduation day soon arrived. I'd been practicing my speech for days, and I had it memorized. The first half hour of the ceremony passed in a blur, and then my moment came. My name was announced. I managed to reach the podium (讲台) without falling down. I faced my classmates. My voice trembled a little, but mostly it was clear and strong. But within seconds, I was done and headed back to my seat. I accomplished something I'd never dreamed of—I spoke in front of hundreds of people.
Although I didn't realize it at the time, the successful completion of that speech gave me the confidence to participate in class at college, to give verbal reports, and to eventually break free from my shyness. I never would have chosen to give a speech at graduation ever. But I'm glad I did. I no longer hesitate when I'm faced with the prospect of doing something I dread. I know it may very well turn out to be one of my shining moments.

Have respect for authority. No matter how much you may dislike them, just remember that teachers and parents care about you and they are only doing their jobs. __4__ Don't argue with them and just obey them.
