Surfing the Internet for fun will make you a better employee, according to an Australian study.
The University of Melbourne study shows that people who use the Internet for their own reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive than those who do not. Study author Brent Coker said, “Surfing the Internet at times helps increase an employee's attention.”
“People need to relax for a bit to get back their attention,” Coker said on the university's website. “Having a short break, such as a quick surfing of the Internet, helps the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total Internet attention for a day's work, and as a result, increases productivity(生产效率),” he said.
According to the study of 300 workers, 70 percent of people who use the Internet at work surf the Internet for their own reasons during office hours. Among the most popular surfing activities are searching for information about products, reading online news, playing online games and watching videos. “Firms spend a lot of money on software to block their employees from watching videos, using social networking sites or shopping online,” said Coker. “That's not always a good idea.”
However, Coker said the study looked at people who surfed the Internet in moderation(适度), or were on the Internet for less than 20 percent of their total time in the office. “Those who spend too much time surfing the Internet will have a lower productivity than those without,” he said.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A new study by Chinese researchers has found differences in the brain activities of men and women addicted to Internet gaming.
The study says addicted men have lower impulse control compared with women, indicating that men are more likely to become addicted to Internet gaming.
Researchers from Renji Hospital, which is connected with Shanghai Jiaotong University, recruited 105 Chinese participants for the study, which had two groups—one with 32 men and 23 women addicted to gaming, and the other with 30 men and 20 women who were not addicted.
They completed a questionnaire on gaming addiction, and reported their gaming history and number of hours playing per week. Researchers also talked with their families to collect the information.
Through FMRI scanning(功能性磁共振扫描), researchers found that men addicted to gaming had lower brain activities in the brain regions associated with impulse control, than non addicted men. The lower the activity levels, the poorer the impulse control. Addicted women, however, showed no differences compared with the healthy female group.
Researchers also studied the functional connectivity between brain regions, which were lower in men with addiction than in non addicted men, but showed no differences in the female groups.
Although there are some limitations, the findings suggest that activity levels displayed in the brain regions could be biomarkers to evaluate the behavioural inhibitions of gaming addicted men, they said.
Gaming disorder was listed as a mental disorder by the World Health Organization earlier this year. People with the disorder have impaired control over gaming and give it increased priority in their lives—to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities.
1.What did researchers find by FMRI scanning
A.Addicted men have higher brain activities.
B.Addicted women have lower impulse control.

[2022·山东济南模拟]Smartphones, tablets and smart watches are banned(禁止) at school for all children under 15 in France. Under the ban students are not able to use their phones at all during school hours, including meal breaks.
“I think it's a good thing. School is not about being on your phone,” Paris mum Marie Caroline Madeleine told AFP. “It's hard with kids. You can't control what they see and that's one of the things that worries me as a parent.”
There is no law like this in Australia, but some Australian schools have banned phones.
McKinnon Secondary School in Victoria introduced a total ban in February and Principal Pitsa Binnion said this has been a success.
McKinnon students still have a Chromebook to use in every class for day to day learning but they're not allowed to use social media(媒体). Ms Binnion said at first “teachers cheered and students moaned (抱怨),” but now they're seeing the positives(优势).“They come to school and they're not allowed to use phones at all during the school day, including lunch breaks,” she said.
“It's been wonderful in terms of students communicating with each other at lunchtime and not looking at their screen,” she said.
Ms Binnion also leads by example and doesn't use her mobile phone in school. “I think anyone can do it if we've done it.”
Not everyone agrees with the bans.Western Sydney University technology researcher Dr.Joanne Orlando wrote in online magazine TheConversation earlier this year that Australia should not ban phones in schools because it's important to educate kids to live in the age they are raised in.
“A good education for students today is knowing how to use technology to learn, communicate and work with ideas,” she wrote. “Banning students from using smartphones is a 1950s response to a 2018 state of play.”
4.Why did Madeleine welcome the ban
A.School is for studying.
B.Kids behave badly nowadays.
C.Teachers find it hard to control kids.
D.Her kids depend too much on phones.
5.What can we learn about the ban in McKinnon Secondary School

6.What does the underlined word “Chromebook” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to
A.A book. B.A notebook.

[2022·河北衡水模拟]Most people have never heard of Tim Berners Lee. He is not nearly as rich or famous as Marc Andreessen, who is the founder of Netscape, or Bill Gates, whose name has become a well known word.
Berners Lee, who works in a small office at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the creator of the World Wide Web. The creation of the Web is so important that some people compare Berners Lee to Johannes Gutenberg, who invented printing by movable type(活字)in the fifteenth century.
Berners Lee was born in England in 1955. His parents, who helped design the world's first commercial(商业地)available computer, gave him a great love of mathematics and learning. In 1980, Berners Lee went to work at CERN, a physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, where he had a lot of material to learn quickly. He had a poor memory for facts and wanted to find a way to help him keep track of things he couldn't remember. He invented a software program that allowed him to create a document that had links to other documents. He continued to develop his idea through the 1980s. A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. The next morning he took two baskets of vegetables to town. But it was raining hard that afternoon and there were few people in the street. When his vegetables were sold out, it was dark. He bought some medicine and hurried to his village.
On his way home he saw a person lying on the snow. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was so afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.
The next afternoon the farmer was sent to the police station. Having shown the baskets, an officer asked, “Are these yours?”“Yes, sir,” the farmer answered timidly(胆怯地). “Have you killed the man?”“No, no, sir,” the farmer said in a hurry.“When did you see the dead man?” “About seven last evening.” “Did you see who killed the man?” “No, sir.” The officer brought out a knife and asked, “Have you seen it yet?” “No, sir.” The officer became angry and told the policeman to beat him up and sent him to prison.
