Some of the World's Finest Stained Glass Artwork
Sainte Chappelle, France
While many say that Paris' must-see cathedral (教堂) is Notre Dame de Paris, Sainte Chappelle should also be high up on the list. Louis IX ordered it to be built in 1239 to house the Crown of Thorns, a famous relic from Constantinople. Within the ceilings of the church are fifteen of the world's finest stained glass windows. Unfortunately, as a result of the French Revolution, one third of the stained glass had to be replaced.
The Chicago Cultural Center, USA
While the Windy City might not house the nation's winningest sports teams, it does have one of the world's most eye-catching displays of stained glass(彩色玻璃). Today's Chicago Cultural Center, which was designed as a library in 1887, has a 38-feet-tall Tiffany glass dome(圆屋顶), which is said to be the largest Tiffany dome in the world.
Erawan Museum, Thailand
The Erawan Museum, built in 1994, houses ancient, priceless Thai artworks, all of which are displayed within the building's three floors, said to symbolize the three levels of the universe. The shiny stained glass is on the second floor, which museum owner Khun Lek Viriyapant considers to be the human level. Designed by German artist Jacob Schwarzkopf, the stained glass artwork shows five continents, with the sun delivering light, and therefore life, into all.
Saint Vitus Cathedral, Czech Republic
While the Czech church whose doors many travelers pass through every day was built way back in 1344, its amazing display of stained glass is a 20th-century donation from well-known Czech Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha. The artwork is nothing if not fitting for Prague, the city in which the stained glass is displayed. After all, it is the modern day Czech Republic from which dreamy Bohemians came.

Today, the tower houses a number of restaurants on its first and second levels. The third level has been turned into a vast platform(平台). From there visitors can see the entire city of Paris. While visitors are allowed to take the stairs to the first two levels, the platform can only be got to by taking the elevators.
To ensure that the “Iron Lady” always looks good, the tower is cleaned and repainted every eight years. It's an effort that takes a team of 25 workers, an entire year. If you travel to Paris one day, don't miss it, the excellent achievement.

I am delighted to hear that you are travelling in China during the summer holiday. First, welcome to China. As far as I know, there are many cultural sites worth visiting in China, but I'd like to recommend the Great Wall and the Forbidden City in Beijing, both of which are on the list of World Cultural Heritage. If you are interested, it is also a good choice for you to go on a hutong tour either by walking or by tricycle. It will allow you to have a taste of the way of life of old Beijingers.
I hope you will enjoy your stay here and learn more about China and its culture.

Vietnam aims to solve the relations between economic development and cultural preservation. Vietnamese cultural departments and activists have tried to preserve the historical and cultural relics in the country.
Vietnam now has more than 40, 000 historical relics. These relics of various forms and history are treasures for future generations. However, hundreds of the relics are severely damaged due to the negative influence of time, war and human activities. Head of Hanoi Relics Management Board, Nguyen Doan Tuan, says rescue work must preserve the relics' soul, “We cannot replace ruined construction with new materials. We must preserve its shape, size and style. We need to pay attention to every brick replaced so that it looks exactly like the original.”
Most relics have to rely on tourist fees for repair and rescue work. Director of Van Mieu Cultural and Science Center, Dang Kim Ngoc, says that the relics must be promoted widely to attract more visitors and bring in more income for repair and preservation, “We provide constant guide services for visitors so that they understand more about our relics. At the same time, a natural surrounding of the relic has been ensured, including the grass field and garden to improve its scenic value.”
The local government agreed that the relics must be turned to the community for shared efforts in the preservation work. Director of Vietnam Revolution Museum Dang Quoc Quan, said that the community must be guided in the preservation and protection, “The UNESCO aims to let local community take part in the preservation of relics. We have seen limitations in the preservation of cultural relics, especially festival related groups of buildings. This requires management and guidance by the government.”
Nguyen Thi Minh Ly from the Department of Heritage says the community should be guided in proper behaviors towards relics, “This will ensure the protection of cultural relics in later generations. Creative restoration(修复)must be based on previous(先前的)values.”
Experts have called for a systematic(系统的)guidance by the state in local level preservation while promoting creative thinking in restoration for each relic.

1.答案与解析:D 细节理解题。根据Pulguksa__Temple部分的“The building of Pulguksa Temple began in 751. In the year 774 the large temple was finished, becoming an important center for Korean national-protection Buddhism(佛教)”可知,从751年开始修建Pulguksa Temple,到774年主体建筑完工,前后相差了23年的时间,故D项正确。

[2022·河北衡水模拟]Mary Anning was an English fossil(化石)collector, dealer and paleontologist(古生物学家). Her fossil-hunting helped change the way people thought about the world.
Mary was born into a poor family in England on May 21, 1799. She lived in the seaside town of Lyme Regis, in Dorset. The family had nine children. Only Mary and her brother Joseph grew up. Mary's father took his children along the beach. They picked up shells and stones to sell to visitors. Mary did not go to school much. Her family was too poor. And schools did not teach children about fossils. Mary could read and write. She taught herself. She learned about rocks and how bodies are made.
In 1811 when Mary and Joseph were fossil hunting, Joseph saw a bone sticking out of the rock. Mary had a hammer to chip away at the rock. Very carefully she uncovered it.To her satisfaction, she found the first complete fossil of the ichthyosaur(鱼龙).

Rich friends helped Mary by selling fossils for her. They sent her money. Scientists wrote letters and came to see her. One good friend was William Buckland, a professor at Oxford University. In addition, Mary also opened a shop to sell fossils, stones and shells. She chatted with visitors.

Yesterday I was stuck in such a hopeless situation where my only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall(中心)buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could help me telephone my driver. She replied, still all smiles, “I'm sorry, Sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remembering my wife's interesting theory(理论)that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you're in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn't see me.
I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

So, with great expectation, I walked towards her with an appropriate smile on my face, and requested if she could be kind enough to make a phone call for me. However, without a word, she pulled her kids to escape from me, as if scared by a murderer. I stood there, hopeless, with a blank face and a sinking heart.

Dancing in his eyes was the real kindness that I had been struggling to look for so long.
