一、过去进行时与when, while, as引导的时间状语从句连用构成复合句
引导词 常见结构 注意事项 例句
when Sb. + was / were + doing sth. + when + sb. + did sth. when=at that time,所以从句谓语动词通常用短暂性动词 I was playing computer games when my father got home. 当我爸爸回到家的时候，我正在玩电脑游戏。
while While + sb. + was / were + doing sth., sb. + did sth. while=during that time，表示某一时间段内发生的动作，因此，从句谓语动词常用延续性动词 While the lights were changing to red, a car suddenly appeared round the corner. 正当交通信号灯要变成红灯的时候，一辆小轿车突然从拐角处驶出来。
as As + sb. + was / were + doing
sth., sb. + did sth. as引导时间状语从句时，相当于while，即后面要接延续性动词，一般译为“正当……”或“随着……” As the doctors were checking him, the pain got worse. 医生给他做检查时，疼痛加剧了。
二、when, while, as引导的时间状语从句中过去进行时的运用需要注意
1. 从句中的动作与主句中的动作同时发生，且进行的时间较长时，从句用过去进行时。如：
When I was cooking, my mobile phone rang. 当我在做饭的时候，我的手机响了。
2. 主、从句动作开始的时间不存在先后顺序，主从句可同时使用过去进行时，此时从句一般由while来引导。如：
My mother was cooking while I was doing my homework. 当我妈妈正在做饭的时候，我正在做作业。
三、when, while, as引导的时间状语从句的区别
1. when引导的时间状语既可以指时间点，又可以指时间段；while引导的时间状语只能指时间段。如：
Henry was trying to pick it up when it bit him again. 亨利正要捡起它时，它又咬了他一口。
While he was waiting at the bus stop yesterday morning, he met his friend, Amy. 昨天早上他在公共汽车站等车时，遇见了他的朋友艾米。
2. when引导的从句中，动词既可用延续性动词，又可用短暂性动词；while和as引导的从句中，动词必须用延续性动词。如：
Why do you want a new job when you’ve got such a good one already？你已经找到如此好的工作，为何还想再找新的？（get为短暂性动词）
Sorry, I was out when you called me. 对不起，你打电话时我刚好外出了。（call为短暂性动词）
Strike while the iron is hot. 趁热打铁。（is为延续性动词，表示一种持续的状态）
The students took notes as they listened. 学生们边听课边做笔记。（listen为延续性动词）
3. when从句的谓语动作可以在主句谓语动作之前、之后或同时发生；while和as从句的谓语动作必须和主句谓语动作同时发生。
（1）从句动作在主句动作之前发生，只用 when。如：When he had finished his homework，he took a short rest. 当他完成作业后，他休息了一会儿。（finished先发生）
（2）从句动作和主句动作同时发生，且从句动作为延续性动词时，when，while，as都可使用。如：
When / While / As we were dancing，a stranger came in. 当我们正在跳舞时，一位陌生人走了进来。（dance为延续性动词）
When ／ While ／ As she was making a phone call，I was writing a letter. 当她在打电话时，我正在写信。（make为延续性动词）
（3）主句、从句动作同时进行，从句动作的时间概念淡化，而主要表示主句动作发生的背景或条件时，只能用 as。这时，as常意为“随着……”“一边……，一边……”。如：The atmosphere gets thinner and thinner as the height increases. 随着高度的增加，大气变得越来越稀薄。
As years go by，China is getting stronger and richer. 随着时间一年一年过去，中国变得越来越富强了。
