Surfing the Internet for fun will make you a better employee, according to an Australian study.
The study shows that people who use the Internet for their own reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive than those who do not. The author of the study Brent Coker said, “Surfing the Internet at times helps increase an employee’s attention.”
“People need to relax for a bit to get back their attention,” Coker said. “Having a short break, such as quick surfing on the Internet, helps the mind to rest itself, leading to higher total Internet attention for a day’s work, and as a result, increases productivity (生产效率),” he said.
According to the study, 70 percent of 300 workers who use the Internet at work surf the Internet for their own reasons during office hours. Among the most popular surfing activities are searching for information about products, reading online news, playing online games and watching videos. “Firms spend a lot of money on software to block their employees from watching videos, using social networking sites or shopping online,” said Coker. “That’s not always a good idea.”
However, Coker said the study looked at people who surfed the Internet in moderation (适度),or were on the Internet for less than 20 percent of their total time in the office. “Those who spend too much time surfing the Internet will have lower productivity than those who do not,” he said.
4. What does the study mainly show
A. People who surf the Internet are good employees.
B. Not everyone surfs the Internet for fun during office hours.
C. Surfing the Internet for fun during office hours increases productivity.
D. The Internet is becoming more and more important in people’s life.

A. the longer a person’s mind rests, the better attention he will have
B. surfing the Internet is the best way to increase productivity
C. workers should have a long break during office hours
D. Workers should let their minds rest now and then
6. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as one of the most popular surfing activities
A. Watching videos.
B. Reading online news.
C. Reading online novels.
D. Playing online games.
7. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Spending too much time surfing the Internet reduces productivity.
B. Those who never surf the Internet have the lowest productivity.
C. Most people don’t surf the Internet in moderation during office hours.
D. People should spend as little time as possible surfing the Internet.

Seeds on Ice
Close to the North Pole, the remote and rocky Plateau Mountain in the Norwegian Svalbard Archipelago seems an unlikely spot for any global effort to safeguard agriculture. In this cold and deserted environment,no grains,no gardens and no trees can grow. Yet at the end of a 130-meter-long tunnel cut out of solid stone is a room filled with humanity’s most precious treasure, the largest and most diverse seed collection—more than a half billion seeds.
A quiet rescue mission is under way. With growing evidence that unchecked climate change will seriously affect food production and threaten the diversity (多样性)of crops around the world, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (保险库)represents a major step towards ensuring the preservation (It藏)of hundreds of thousands of crop varieties. This is a seed collection, but more importantly, it is a collection of the traits found within the seeds: the genes that give one variety resistance to a particular pest and another variety tolerance for hot, dry weather.
Few people will ever see or come into contact with the contents of this vault. In sealed boxes, behind multiple locked doors, monitored by electronic security systems, enveloped in below-zero temperatures, and surrounded by tons of rock, hundreds of millions of seeds are protected in their mountain fortress. Frozen in such conditions inside the mountain, seeds of most major crops will remain viable for hundreds of years, or longer. Seeds of some are capable of retaining (保留)their ability to grow for thousands of years.
Everyone can look back now and say that the Seed Vault was a good and obvious idea, and that of course the Norwegian government should have approved and funded it. But back in 2004, when the Seed Vault was proposed, it was viewed as a crazy, impractical, and expensive idea. We knew that nothing would provide a definite guarantee. But we were tired, and frankly scared of the steady, greater losses of crop diversity. The Seed Vault was built by optimists who wanted to do something to preserve options so that humanity and its crops might be better prepared for change. If it simply resupplied seed gene banks with samples those gene banks had lost, this would repay our efforts.
The Seed Vault is about hope and commitment—about what can be done if countries come together and work cooperatively to accomplish something significant,long-lasting,and worthy of who we are and wish to be.
8. According to the passage, the Seed Vault is________.
A. a tunnel where the collected seeds are displayed
B. a stone room that contains the seeds of endangered crops
C. a seed gene bank that stores diverse seeds for future agriculture
D. a lab where researchers study how to maintain the diversity of crops

C. alive
D. valuable
10. Paragraph 3 mainly tells us________.
A. how the seeds are preserved

C. why the seeds are protected
D. what people do to study the seeds
11. We can know from the passage that________.
A. the Seed Vault offers a solution to climate change
B. most countries took part in rescuing the seed varieties
C. the Seed Vault guarantees to prevent the loss of crop diversity
D. many people originally considered building the Seed Vault unwise

I never saw my father come home from work late or ill, nor did I ever see my father take a “night out with the boys”. He had no hobbies but just took care of his family.
For 22 years, since I left home for college,my father called me every Sunday at 9: 00 am. He was always interested in my life—how my family was doing. The calls even came when he and my mother were in Australia, England or Florida.
Nine years ago, when I bought my first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days, painting my house. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked was a glass of iced tea, and that I hold a paintbrush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy, for I had a law practice to run, and I could not take the time to hold the paintbrush, or talk to my father.
Five years ago, my 71-year-old father spent five hours putting together a swing set (成套秋千)for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea, and talk to him. But again, I had laundry to do, and the house to clean.
The morning on Sunday, January 16,1995, my father telephoned me as usual—this time he seemed to have forgotten some things we had discussed the week before. I had to get to church, and I cut the conversation short.
The call came at 4: 40 am. That day my father was sent to hospital in Florida. I got on a plane immediately, and vowed (发誓)that when I arrived, I would make up for the lost time, and have a nice long talk with him and really get to know him.
I arrived in Florida at 1: 00 am,but my father had passed away at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.
In the years since his death I have learnt much about my father, and even more about every single day.

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia (百科全书),is the largest encyclopedia ever. An encyclopedia is a collection of informative articles about various things. Encyclopedias used to be printed as books. 16
“Wiki” is an Internet term that means “a website that can be edited by the public”. It comes from “wikiwiki”,a Hawaiian word for “quick. Two Americans, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, created Wikipedia in 2001. 17 It has about 6 million articles in 300 languages and is visited by billions of people each day,who want to find information on just about anything—science, math, languages, art, culture, and company histories. There are articles on sports stars, too, and even long-forgotten soap operas from the 1970s.

Editing is unpaid, although Wikipedia does employ a small staff. Wikipedia is freely available to anyone with an Internet connection. Its founders hoped that the model would make use of humanity’s collective knowledge.
19 Many Wikipedia pages contain errors, although the organization has a content review system that works to fix this problem. Several studies have concluded that Wikipedia is as accurate as most print encyclopedias. Indeed, a 2005 report in the journal Nature found it to be only slightly less reliable than. Encyclopedia Britannica.
20 It does not rely on advertising. Instead, all of its funds (资金)come from donations. Perhaps more importantly, the number of its volunteer editors is shrinking.
Despite these difficulties, Jimmy Wales says he will still stick to his dream. He has big plans for the future. He wants Wikipedia available in all of the world’s languages.

I first played ping-pong in our basement (地下室)at home. My brother and I asked for an old wooden table from my grandfather. It was painted green. Although it was very simple, it served its purpose every day. My father never really played any other sports with me, but ping-pong was one that he played quite well and it took me plenty of time before I could beat him. My elder brother was also a very good competitor.
When I got to university, I was happy to discover a ping-pong table in the common room. I spent a great deal of time there, often until midnight. There were about three or four friends that I often played against. We were all at the same skill level. One of them had ever played in a tournament (锦标赛).A friend from Germany said his father had ever won the German national tournament. We took part in a tournament. My ranking (名次)is the third place, but I had beaten the first and second place winners when we had played for fun. I sometimes played with other friends who didn’t play ping-pong well, but I would use my left hand to give them an advantage. But before long I became so skilled with my left hand that they no longer had the advantage.
Later,I played in a ping-pong competition which was held by my university. I lost at first. But because it was double elimination (双淘汰制),I went to the loser group. I beat all the players and then played against the student who had beaten me in the first round. Surprisingly, I beat him 3 times and won the competition.

第三部分写作
第一节
One possible version:
Nowadays, there are various English learning apps on the Internet. Recently, I’ve made a survey in my class of whether students should make use of these apps in their study over which controversy among my classmates has arisen.
70% of the students are in favor of using these learning apps Firstly, the apps can help improve their listening as well as expand vocabulary. Moreover, they can refer to these apps whenever and wherever possible, thus broadening their horizons.
In contrast, students, accounting for 30%0 of the total number, hold the opposite view. They feel students tend to rely on these apps, making them unable to think independently. Worse ill, some apps may even contain wrong and harmful information.
From where I stand. I contend that we students should make good use of these learning apps.
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Later, there was a tournament held in the city where I studied. It was a tournament for university students. Players came from all the northern universities. I felt very proud because I took part in it for my university. I believed that I could play pretty well I expected to get a good ranking in the tournament I felt very nervous, because I played against a student who had won many times. I played very hard and tried my best. Although I lost the tournament, it was a good practice.
Paragraph 2:
After the tournament I didn’t often play the sport because of the busy study. But I played ping-pong with my friends when I was free. I thought it was a great deal of fun to play ping-pong with friends. It was also a good way to make our friendship close and keep us healthy. We sometimes took part in a competition together, but we didn’t care about winning or not We all knew that a win was not everything. We just enjoyed playing together and had a wonderful time.
