Alex around the world
Revision
Besides weddings and festivals, what other elements are an important part of a country’s customs and traditions Make a list and describe them.
Revision
Funeral rituals are an important part of a country’s traditions. They can vary quite a lot in different places around the world. At traditional Chinese funerals, people wear white, while in Western countries people usually wear black.
It is also important to honour new life. In China, a celebration is held when a baby turns one month old. This is traditionally the time when the baby is formally introduced to the extended family and friends.
Table manners are highly regarded on formal occasions. According to Chinese customs, no one should sit down or begin to eat before the host or guest of honour has done so.
Appreciation
The first travel journal:
1. … it would be the opportunity of a lifetime.
2. The customs that followed were anything but ordinary.
3. I have two left feet … and both of them hurt!
1. Why did the author think “it would be the opportunity of a lifetime”
“The opportunity of a lifetime” is employed here to talk about the rareness for the author to experience an Indian wedding. He guessed it must be an amazing experience.
Appreciation
2. How do you understand the sentence “The customs that followed
were anything but ordinary”
The phrase “anything but ordinary” means being “very special”. It is used here to emphasize that the customs are totally different from his own.
Appreciation
3. Why did the author say “I have two left feet … and both of them
hurt”
If someone has two left feet, he/she is surely not good at dancing. Pay attention here. When the author says, in comparison to other dancers, he is not good at dancing, and he intends to highlight the fact that the other dancers are so good at dancing. Even so, he danced a lot and both of his feet were hurt.
Appreciation
1. No wonder people from Rio take a week off for this happy occasion.
Why did the author say “no wonder” What does the author want to show
Because the Carnival was in the air. “No wonder” is employed to show that this happy occasion is so grand that it is natural for people to take a week off for this holiday.
The second travel journal:
Appreciation
2. To experience the spirit of the Carnival for myself, I went to a
street party.
What is “the spirit of Carnival”
The Carnival is a time of passion, friendship, trust and freedom.
Appreciation
3. Then there was an explosion of colours and lively music, and the
group jumped into action.
With the two phrases used here, what does the author want to show
The word explosion is used here to describe the abundance of rich colours and lively music. An explosion is usually sudden and powerful and the start of the street party is such.
“Jumped into action” adds to the suddenness and powerfulness of the street parties.
Appreciation
4. I was so caught up in the party fever that I hardly noticed five hours fly by!
What does the “fever” mean here
“Fever” here means “great interest or excitement about something”. The author was so absorbed and interested in the party that he failed to notice that five hours had passed.

The Carnival current carried us through the ever-growing sea of people, dancing all the way.
Iceboxes of soft drinks and beer lined the narrow streets, and the smell of roasted meat filled the air as we passed wave after wave of street stands.
Even as I lay in bed that evening, the bright colours and lively music were still swimming all around me.
The travel journal describing Alex’s experience at the Rio Carnival
uses a group of words related to the sea. Please find the sentences
in the travel journal.
Appreciation
This year, I had the chance to attend the Beltane Fire Festival in Edinburgh. I have always had a burning desire to check out this festival, and I really loved it. Originally a small event, it is now one of the hottest tickets in town. It lit up my heart to see the amazing performances, which are based on ancient local traditions. The warmth of the local people was also great and I felt really welcomed. I hope I can go back one day!
Use a group of words related to a topic to describe your experience at a festival.

The travel journal about Alex’s experience at the Rio Carnival uses the method of contrast to describe the scenes before and during the street party. Find the sentences in the travel journal and use contrast to describe the scenes before and during a dragon boat race.
Extension
Contrast is a method of organization with which a writer highlights the differences between two people, places, things or ideas. Using contrast often draws the reader’s attention and makes the description more vivid and interesting to read.
Sentences using contrast:
I could see a group of around 20 Brazilian dancers and a band in fancy costumes standing in the street. Some of them carried flags, which blew in the wind. The crowd waited with excitement.
Then there was an explosion of bright colours and lively music, and the group jumped into action. The band started playing an energetic samba beat, the dancers twisted and turned, and the crowd began to cheer, clap and sing. The whole group started marching down the street. The Carnival current carried us through the ever-growing sea of people, dancing all the way.
Extension
Sample answer:
The beautifully coloured dragon boats sat alongside each other on the still water with their crews ready, oars in hand. A large holiday crowd had gathered by the lake to watch the dragon boat race. Silence settled over them as the starter raised his gun. The crack of the gun broke the tension and the crowd exploded into cheers and screams of encouragement. The loud beats of drums were ringing in their ears as the boats sped away across the lake.
