Middle School Laboratory Safety Rules
Science is about discovering and exploring the natural world. Explorations can occur in the classroom, laboratory or field. As part of your science lessons, you will take part in many activities using many different materials, equipment and chemicals, which can be dangerous if not used correctly. As a result, you may be faced with biological, chemical or physical hazards.
Safety is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing. The following safety rules have been developed for the protection and safety of everyone.
★ Behave yourself in a responsible way at all times. Risky behavior such as throwing things and doing experiments without teachers' instructions is not allowed.
★ Eating, drinking, chewing gum, wearing make-up, wearing contact lenses(隐形眼镜) or other unsafe activities are not allowed.
★ Do not enter or work in the laboratory unless an instructor is present.
★ Never enter areas where chemicals are kept.
★ Taking any chemicals or equipment away from the classroom or laboratory is not allowed.
The safety rules must be followed at all times. Review these rules with your teacher and parents, then sign and get the signature(签名) of a parent. The signature shows that you understand the lab can be dangerous, and that you have read the rules and agree to follow them at all times. Signatures are needed before you can go on with any lab or science classroom activity.

A while back I caught a news report on something called "couch surfing" and the network of trusting souls who make this phenomenon possible. They offer to put up travellers free of charge and help them on their ways. At first, it sounded unbelievable. I mean, inviting strangers into one's home for one or two nights Give me a break.
However, I was intrigued. I decided to investigate. The only way to truly learn about this phenomenon was to dive in. So I planned a trip to Finland, a country I've always wanted to explore. I would couch surf at every stop there.
If ever any anxiety existed when stepping into the unknown, it disappeared when my first host met me at the train station. Ari looked like my idea of a typical Finn: tall and blue-eyed. Finns were also supposed to be famously reserved(寡言的). Ari was anything but. He was a live wire, giving me an enthusiastic welcome and hiking with me to his apartment, where he showed me the sleeper sofa, served me tea, and engaged me in lively conversation. He also handed me a key to come and go as I pleased.
If this was what couch surfing was all about—trust and friendship—then I had got off to a good start. As I boarded my next train to continue my journey, I began to think about this couch-surfing idea. What urged these people to open their homes to strangers I concluded that there was a desire to lend a hand to like-minded folks who might enrich their own lives.
Seven cities in 14 days. Seven hosts. Seven new friends. If couch surfing taught me anything, it's this: Most people are good and generous. Where will couch surfing take me next Who knows But I can't wait to find out.
1.Which of the following best explains "intrigued" underlined in the second paragraph

A.To take an adventure with strangers. B.To exchange houses for a short time.
C.To learn more about others, family lives. D.To enrich their own lives by helping others.
4.What can be the suitable title for the text
A.Travel on Trust and Couches B.A Free Travel in Finland
C.Experiences in Strangers' Houses D.A Plan for Couch Surfing
C
Teenagers who talk on the cellphone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test. That's the finding of a new study. That memory impairment might be one side effect of the radiation(辅射) that phones use to keep us connected while we're on the go.
Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory. This type of memory helps us recall abstract(抽象的) symbols and shapes, explains Milena Foerster. The teens participated in memory tests twice, one year apart. Each time, they had one minute to memorize 13 pairs of abstract shapes. Then they were shown one item from each pair and asked to match it with one of five choices. The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory. That's the ability to remember words. The two memory tests are parts of an intelligence test. The researchers also surveyed the teens on how they used cellphones. And they got call records from phone companies. The researchers used those records to figure out how long the teens were using their phones. This allowed the researchers to work out how big a radiation exposure(接触) each person could have got while talking.
A phone user's exposure to the radiation can differ widely. Some teens talk on their phones more than others. People also hold their phones differently. If the phone is close to the ear, more radiation may enter the body, Foerster notes. Even the type of network signal that a phone uses can matter. Much of Switzerland was using an older "second-generation" type of cellphone network when the data were collected, the study reports. Many phone carriers(手机运营商) have moved away from such networks. And more companies plan to update their networks within the next few years.
The teens' scores in the figural memory tests were roughly the same from one year to the next. But those who normally held their phones near their right ears, and who were also exposed to higher levels of radiation, scored a little bit worse after a year. No group of teens showed big changes on the verbal memory test. Why might one type of memory be linked to cellphone use, but not another Foerster thinks it could have to do with where different memory centres sit in the brain. The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear.
1.What can we know from Paragraph 2
A.The teens took two types of memory tests four times in total.
B.The teens needed to report the average time spent on their phones.
C.Researchers paid little attention to the teens' habits of using phones.
D.The teens' ability of remembering words was shown in the figural memory test.
2.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3
A.How people hold their phones has no effect on their bodies.
B.Phone users can make more money with new networks.
C.The cellphone network type has little to do with the cellphone use.
D.Radiation levels are affected by the cellphone network types.
3.According to the study, in which aspect did teens who used their phones near their right ears a lot do worse
A.Matching numbers. B.Reading signals. C.Remembering shapes. D.Learning words.
4.What might be the best title for the text
A.Cellphone Use and Safety Warnings
B.Facts About Cellphone Use at School
C.Dangerous Levels of Cellphone Use Among Teens
D.Teen's Cellphone Use Linked to Memory Problems
D
In October, I told the eight-year-olds in the class I teach in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, about my plan. "Since all of you have done extra jobs around the house to earn some money," I said, "then well buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise."
I watched them while they walked up and down the supermarket. "Flowers!" Kristine cried. The group rushed towards the holiday plants.
"You can't eat flowers,"—It was wiser to use any extra money to buy something that could be turned into meals.
"But Mrs Sherlock," came the begging voice, "we want flowers."
Defeated finally, I put a pot of "funny" purple mums in the cart full of foods. "She'll like this one." The children agreed.
An organization had given us the name and address of a needy grandmother who had lived alone for many years. We finally pulled up in front of a small house. A slightly-built woman with a weary face came to the door to welcome us.
My little group ran to get the foods. As each box was carried in, the old woman kept on saying "Thanks." — much to her visitors' pleasure. When Amy put the mums on the counter, the woman seemed surprised. She's wishing it was a bag of rice, I thought.
We returned to the car. As we fastened our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window. The woman inside waved goodbye, then turned and walked across the room, past the turkey, past the goods, straight to the mums. She put her face in them. When she raised her head, there was a smile on her lips. She was transformed(转变) before our eyes.
The children were quiet. At that moment, they had seen for themselves the power they have to make another's life better. The children had sensed that sometimes a person needs a pot of funny purple flowers on a dark November day.
1.What does the story mainly tell us
A.Everyone has the power to change the world. B.Acts of kindness can change someone's life.
C.The poor people may need flowers as well. D.Children have different thoughts from adults.
2.What does the underlined word "mums" refer to in the passage
A.Mothers. B.Teachers. C.Flowers. D.Gifts.
3.Why did the author consider the mums "funny"
A.Because she thought they were too ugly.
B.Because she thought they were for children.
C.Because she thought they were too expensive.
D.Because she thought they couldn't help people in need.
4.What can we know from the passage
A.The old woman preferred food to flowers.
B.Flowers are more important than food to the poor.
C.The old woman's dark day was brightened by the children.
D.All the money the children earned was transformed to food.

The bell rang, announcing the end of the vivid art class Karson loved most. He was delighted that he had created a very satisfying work. So he walked to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the floor in front of the classroom bookcase, was a golden ticket! Karson picked it up. His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank. He couldn't believe his luck!
The boys and girls in Karson's class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of the box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! Karson looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Evans was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning.
Karson decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he'd already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would most probably be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister's birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn't his heartbeat. It was "Finders, keepers", right He wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn't earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need this extra ticket for his great plan!
Paragraph 1:
Karson stared at the blank name line for a moment.__________________________________________

Paragraph 2:
"Karson, I'd like you to have another ticket!" said Miss Evans._________________________________

She was transformed before our eyes. 和The children had sensed that sometimes a person needs a pot of funny purple flowers on a dark November day.
Train for your level of fitness and your goals."可知,该段建议"根据你的健康水平和你的目标而训练",结合空格下文"If you run for fitness and your goal is 30 minutes a day, that's cool. But if you are just starting out, you need to get there slowly."可知,如果你为了健身而跑步,目标是每天30分钟,那就太酷了。但是如果你是刚开始,你需要慢慢达到那个目标。据此可知,训练要量力而行,跑步不要超过你身体所能承受的范围。故选D。

Paragraph 1:
Karson stared at the blank name line for a moment. He knew his plan wouldn't be so great if he won with a ticket that didn't belong to him. So he walked up to his teacher. "Miss Evans, I happened to find this ticket on the floor near the bookcase. I think the one who lost it will look for it," he said, dropping it on her desk. When he turned around to leave, the teacher stopped him.
Paragraph 2:
"Karson, I'd like you to have another ticket!" said Miss Evans. Karson was amazed and wondered why. Miss Evans smiled and signed to the class to quiet down, "Karson handed in the golden ticket he had just found. I think he is honest and deserves another one!" The class burst into loud applause. Karson happily went back to his seat, eagerly expecting the ticket drawing. He still wanted his name to be picked, but he would feel OK even if it wasn't. After all, making the right choice did make him feel great!
