Adrian's "Amazing Race" started early, when his parents realized that he, as a baby, couldn't hear a thing, not even loud noises. In a special school for the hearing-impaired(听觉受损的), he learnt sign language and got to mix with other disabled children. However, the sight of all the disabled children communicating with one another upset his mother. She wanted him to lead a normal life. So after speaking to an advisor, she sent him to private classes where he learnt to read lips and pronounce words.
Later on, Adrian's parents decided to send him to a regular school. But the headmaster tried to prevent them from doing so, saying regular schools couldn't take care of a special-needs student. His parents were determined to take the risk and push him hard to go through his work every day because they want to prove that, given the opportunity, he could do anything. Adrian made the grade and got accepted. It was a big challenge. The pace was faster so he had to sit at the front of the class and really pay attention to the teacher, which wasn't always easy. But he stuck to it and did a lot of extra work after school.
The effort made by Adrian and his parents paid off. Adrian graduated with good grades and got into a top high school. He also achieved a lot in life outside school. He developed a love for the outdoors and went to Nepal to climb mountains. He even entered the World Yacht Race 05/06—being the first hearing-impaired Asian to do so.
But none of these achievements would have been possible without one of the most important lessons from his mother. "If you believe in yourself and work hard, you can achieve great result," she often said.

When Jason Esterhuizen was 23 in 2011, an accident blinded him. Now, nine years later, special glasses and a device (装置) inside his brain are allowing him to make out some details of the world around him.
In 2018, Jason moved from South Africa to California to join in a study that offered the possibility of helping him with his sight. Run by University of California and a company called Second Sight, the study aimed to test an unusual medical product called Orion.
There are three important pieces to Orion. One part looks like a pair of glasses holding a camera on the person's head, which also sends wireless signals. The second part is a tiny computer processing the video from the camera —that's where the sight comes from. The third part is a tiny device implanted(植入) directly into the patient's brain, which is new and different about Orion.
For years, Second Sight and other companies have been working on ways to send visual information into the brains of blind people. Most of the efforts have focused on connecting to the retina(视网膜). By sending electrical signals to the retina, some visual information can be sent to the brain. So far Second Sight has given about 350 people retinal implants.
But a retinal implant wasn't possible for Jason. That's why Orion's direct connection to the brain was especially interesting to him. Dr Nader Pouratian, who gave Jason his implant, said, "With the system we're testing now, you don't even need to have eyes for the device to work. Jason is one of the six trying out Orion in the world.
Although Jason still can't see normally, he can tell dark from light. He says he sees little white dots on a black background, like looking up at the stars at night. "Now I can do things that I couldn't do before. It's making my life much easier."
1.What do the underlined words in the first paragraph mean
A.Ignore. B.Understand. C.Recognize. D.Prove.
2.What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3
A.Where our sight comes from. B.How the product Orion works.
C.How people with glasses see. D.What differences Orion has.
3.Why did Jason agree to test the Orion
A.He was interested in Orion. B.Orion is equipped for free.
C.He wanted to move to America. D.Orion helps him recover some sight.
4.What can we infer from the passage
A.Orion is worn by the patient on the head. B.Orion has been implanted in 350 people.
C.Orion brings simple sight to the blind. D.Orion isn's fit for patients without retinas.
D
Taller women may face a higher risk of many cancers than their shorter ones, according to a US study released on Thursday.
Researchers looked at a sample(样本) of nearly 145,000 women aged 50 to 79 for the analysis published in the US journal Cancer Epidemiology. They found that each additional 10 centimeters of height was linked to a 13 percent higher risk of getting cancer.
"Finally, cancer is a result of processes having to do with growth, so it makes sense that hormones(荷尔蒙) or other growth factors that influence height may also influence cancer risk," said lead author Geoffrey Kabat, senior epidemiologist(流行病学家) at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York.
After 12 years of following women who entered the study without cancer, researchers found links between greater height and higher possibility of developing cancers of the breast, colon(结肠), kidney(肾), thyroid(甲状腺), as well as multiple myeloma(骨髓瘤) and melanoma(黑素瘤).
"We were surprised at the number of cancer sites that were positively associated with height. In this data set, more cancers are associated with height than were associated with body mass index(BMI体重指数)," added Kabat.
Taller women even suffered a higher risk for some cancers, such as a 23 to 29 percent increase in the risk of developing cancers of the kidney rectum, thyroid.
None of the 19 cancers studied showed a lower risk with greater height. The study did not establish a certain height level at which cancer risk begins to rise, and Kabat said it is important to remember that the increased risk researchers found was small.
"It needs to be kept in mind that factors such as age, smoking, body mass index, and certain other risk factors have considerably larger effects," he said. "The association of height with a number of cancer sites suggests that exposures in early life, including nutrition, play a role in influencing a person's risk of cancer."
1. What do you know about the research
A. The participants are of the same age.
B. They chose most middle-aged and elderly women.
C. They found hormones are sure to cause cancer.
D. The participants must be American natives.
2. According to Geoffrey Kabat we can know that _____.
A. cancer has a bad effect on the physical growth
B. obesity is more highly associated with cancer
C. no women are aware of their unfavorable height
D. so many kinds of cancer are linked to the height
3. What does the last paragraph imply
A. The lifestyle influences a person's health heavily.
B. A poor habit will lead to a sudden growth.
C. A person's lifespan depends on his height.
D. Good nutrition can ensure your good health.
4. We can infer from the passage that _____.
A. the tall women are sure to suffer from cancer
B. many researchers disagree with Geoffrey Kabat
C. more evidence should be found in future
D. BMI is the main cause for 19 cancer sites

Diane Ray was completely self-centred and very spoilt(宠坏的). Her parents gave her everything that she wanted, knowing that she would throw a temper tantrum(发脾气) if they did not satisfy her desire. She would scream(尖叫) and lie on the floor drumming her heels. Finally her parents always gave in.
That was why she was alone on the beach, wearing an expensive swimsuit. It had taken a big tantrum to get her parents to buy it for her. They were back at the beach house, recovering from the tantrum she had thrown when they told her that it was too dangerous to go diving alone. "Dangerous " she had said. "You just don't want me to have fun. I'm going and if you try to stop me, I'll scream."
"What are you doing " a voice asked. Diane jumped and looked around. She did not know that the man was there until he spoke.
"I'm going to dive," she answered coldly.
"You shouldn't swim today," the man advised. "There is a storm(暴风雨) coming up."
"You should mind your own business!" Diane replied and walked into the gentle waves.
"If you go out there, you'll be sorry," the man called after her. But she did not want to reply.
Diane slipped into the water and dived happily until white waves began rolling in and it became harder to swim against the current(水流). Sea water hit against her face, making it difficult to breathe. Oh, why did I not listen to the advice

The third part is a tiny device implanted(植入)directly into the patient's brain, which is new and different about Orion."可知,第三段介绍了Orion产品的工作原理。故选B。
3.推理判断题。根据第五段中"But a retinal implant wasn't possible for Jason. That's why Orion's direct connection to the brain was especially interesting to him."
Although Jason still can't see normally, he can tell dark from light. He says he sees little white dots on a black background, like looking up at the stars at night."

答案:①exploring ②fell ③Curiosity ④mysterious ⑤but ⑥would be ⑦what ⑧absolutely ⑨at ⑩to try
curious(好奇的)的名词形式为curiosity。
mystery(神秘的事物)的形容词为mysterious。
but 除……以外。故填but。
故填would be。
故填what。
at all cost不惜任何代价。故填at。
can't wait to do sth迫不及待做某事,因为迫不及待做的事情是还没有发生的。故填to try。

How is everything Recently, with the Chinese New Year approaching, an exhibition of Chinese paper-cuttings will be held in our city library. Knowing that you are interested in traditional Chinese culture, I am writing to invite you to the exhibition.
Paper-cutting is a Chinese folk art with a long history, dating back to the Northern and Southern Dynasties. Paper cuttings are not only used for home decoration, but for religious purposes and have been an important part of everyday life in China. As for the display itself, it will give you the chance to enjoy all kinds of beautiful paper-cuttings. What's more, you can't miss the DIY part. I'm sure it's worth a visit.
I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
Frightened, she began to scream. And she felt that she would slip beneath the surface. Then, she heard a calm voice, "Hold on! I'm coming." With relief, she saw the man rowing a boat towards her. "I hope you've learned a lesson. You put us both in danger," he shouted angrily, as he dragged her into the boat. Gratefully, Diane thanked him and ran towards the beach house.
Paragraph 2:
After Diane closed her bedroom's door, she was lost in thought. The pictures of her throwing a temper tantrum appeared in her mind. Feeling ashamed, she went out and walked towards her mother. She made an apology to her mother for her bad behavior. She said, "I'm sorry, Mum. You and my Dad have cared me a lot, showing your selfless love on me. But I didn't cherish it. Even worse, I hurt you deeply. I promise I will listen to your words later." With tears in eyes, they hugged tightly.
