A
There are probably no people on Earth who like to gossip as much as the British. If prying into(打探) others' lives were an Olympic sport, then Team GB would surely take the gold medal.
And when the British can't watch the lives of real people, they have another source of entertainment to fall back on—the soap opera. British soap operas are very different to US TV dramas. For one, they are normally longer running. The two most popular, Coronation Street and EastEnders, have been running for 48 and 24 years respectively. Both are broadcast several times a week, so remarkably there have been more than 7,000 episodes of Coronation Street.
The most obvious difference is that, unlike US dramas, the British soap operas focus on the real world. There is little glamour(魅力), the stars are rarely rich, and they normally have boring jobs. Perhaps the appeal is that the lives of the characters often mirror the lives of the audience—but with some drama added. This means the viewer can relate to the characters and feel the pain and happiness they go through on the show.
Because these soap operas last for decades, the cast is ever changing. The shows rarely focus on one or two main characters. Like the real world, people come and go all the time. However, there are exceptions. Coronation Street's William Roach, 76, has played the role of Ken Barlow since the very first episode of the show in 1960, and he is still a regular.
The choice of which soap opera you follow is often cultural: people from the north of British tend to watch Coronation Street as it is set in Manchester. People from the south generally prefer EastEnders, which is set in the cast of London. The show is generally considered grittier and is aimed at a younger audience.
1.What is the main difference between American dramas and British soap operas
A.American dramas are longer.
B.British soap operas are longer.
C.American dramas deal with dangerous things.
D.British soap operas deal with real people.
2.Why do British people like to watch such operas
A.They can find their own life from the operas.
B.They can enjoy the operas in their free time.
C.They can watch the operas for many years.
D.They care about the fate of the characters in the operas.
3.The underlined word "episode" in the fourth paragraph probably means "_______".
A.play B.page C.issue D.part

To the west and off the European Continent, there are several thousands of islands on the continental shelf(大陆架). They are generally called the British Isles. Of all these isles, the largest one is called Great Britain. For convenience, it is often shortened to Britain. Still to the west of Great Britain is the second largest island known as Ireland. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) is made up of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and a number of smaller islands around them. The total area of the country is some 240,000 square kilometres with a population of about 57 million.
Great Britain runs nearly 1,000 kilometres from south to north and extends, at the widest part, about 500 kilometres from west to east. Its area is some 230,000 square kilometres. Great Britain is traditionally divided into three parts, or countries: England in the south, Scotland in the north, and Wales in the southwest. There are discernible(可辨别的) differences between them even now.
England is the largest and most developed of all the three. Its area, about 130,000 square kilometres, takes up nearly 60% of the whole island. Its population is more than 46 million which makes up 85% of the country's whole population. The importance of England is so great in Britain that some foreigners just say "England" when they mean Britain. The same is true of the custom of speaking of the British people as the English who are the majority in the United Kingdom.
Scotland is the second largest both in area and population. It has an area of about 78,760 square kilometres, less than 30% of the whole island, with a population of 5 million, less than one-tenth of the whole population.
Wales is the smallest of the three both in area and population. In area, 20,700 square kilometres, makes up less than 9% while its population, 2.7 million, does not exceed(超过) 5% of the whole.

If you want to learn a language and become fluent in it, you really need to start as early in life as possible, because the older you get, the harder it can be to get your tongue round new words and sounds. However, that is not a reason to put off learning a language later in life, because there are still many advantages to it.
As you get older, it can become more and more tempting to stick to things you are most familiar with. However, giving yourself something new to do can help to keep your brain active, and the more active your brain is, the younger you will feel.
We all need new challenges every now and again. It makes life interesting. Don't set your expectations too high—you aren't going to become fluent in a couple of months, for example. Instead, set yourself short term goals to finish a text-book or to practice your skills on a language speaker. The challenge will provide you with a renewed energy for life.
Many people, especially when they are older, put off going overseas because they are worried about communicating with the local people. However, once you start to learn a language, you will have much more confidence to travel in countries where the language is spoken. Once you are able to buy things, ask directions and have free conversations, you will find traveling much more enjoyable.
One of the best reasons for learning a language later in life is simply because you can. When younger, you probably had little spare time. Now, you probably have more time in hand because your family has grown up and you may even have retired. There are so many tools you can use to learn languages these clays (the television and Internet are two obvious ones), so you may not even have to pay.

A.they are planning to travel abroad alone
B.they have more time than the young
C.they have been left behind by families
D.they have a better memory
4.Which would be the best title for the passage
A.Learn a Language Later in Life

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes—even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors, "If John didn't have his head tied on, he would forget that too!" Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn't that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very very absent-minded.
One hot summer day, professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor's wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
"Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town."
"What You forgot the name Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I'll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don't forget where you put it."
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

答案:
Paragraph 1:
"What is the matter now " asked his wife. "I just can't remember why I come back and where I am supposed to be going on such a hot summer day," replied the professor. However, the real reason was that he forgot where he had left his children. Sensing something wrong, Mrs Smith didn't believe his words, because whenever he told a lie, he would blink his eyes usually quickly. "Tell me the truth," ordered his wife. "As you told me, I didn't forget where I put the name of that town, but I forget the station where I left our children!" whispered the professor, his voice trembling. "What a bad memory!" shouted the wife.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing the cry, out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out what had happened. A fight between the couple was about to start when the professor's cell phone began to ring. His friend, whose patience had worn thin, phoned to complain. The professor apologized, got into his car and drove away, leaving behind a bunch of people outside the house. Being afraid that he would make matters worse again, Mrs Smith decided to follow him, who then called a taxi. By the time she caught up with her husband, the children were already back home safe and sound.
