Life in the Internet age is lonely—or is it That's what experts in human interaction are debating after a new Stanford University survey has been published.
According to the study, the more time people spend online, the less they can spare for reallife relationships with family and friends. The researchers asked 113 people about the Web's influence on daily activities. 36% of those people are online for more than five hours a week. "As Internet use becomes more widespread, it will have an increasingly isolating(孤立的) effect on society," says Robert Kraut, one of the researchers.
Scholars and Web lovers criticized the study for stretching its data to make the "isolating" point. While 13% of regular Web users admitted the loss of time with loved ones, 60% reported watching less TV. The survey also shows that email is the most popular online activity. If some of webheads(网虫) spend what was once passive TV time keeping company with friends via emails, "that's a move towards greater connectedness," says Paul Resnick, a professor at the University of Michigan.
This isn't the first claim that the Web should be criticized. A 1998 report monitored 73 Pittsburgh-area families' Net use for a year. People who used the Internet more "talked less to family members and reported being lonelier and more depressed," says Robert Kraut.
"It's true that there have been big declines in social connectedness over the past decades, but those declines began before the Internet was invented," says Thomas Putnam.
As Amitay Etzioni says, the Internet gives us a different kind of social life—not better or worse than before, but just different.

If you want to walk in the footsteps of some of the world's greatest figures, then go to Oxford. Many of Oxford's 38 colleges are open to the public all year round. Here are a few of the colleges worth visiting and some famous people who have studied there:
Christ Church College
Long before it became known as a location for the Harry Potter films, Christ Church was the college where Albert Einstein, author Charles Dodgson who wrote Alice in Wonderland, and 13 British prime ministers studied. In the largest and one of the most popular colleges, you'll want to see the paintings in the 16th-century Great Hall, historic Christ Church Cathedral—England's smallest cathedral, and listen to Great Tom, the seven-ton tower bell.
Magdalen College
Many consider Magdalen to be one of the most beautiful of Oxford's colleges. This is where author Oscar Wilde read "Greats" (a classics course) in the 1870s, and where actor, comedian and pianist Dudley Moore earned a scholarship to study music. See the medieval(中世纪的) church with its 15th-century tower. Opposite the college is the beautiful Botanic Garden—Britain's oldest—founded in 1621.
Merton College
Founded in 1264, Merton has the oldest medieval library in use. J. R. R. Tolkien is said to have spent many hours here writing The Lord of the Rings. One of the college's treasures is an astrolabe(星盘), thought to have belonged to Chaucer. The college has "the most amazing" collection of medieval coloured glass in Oxford.
Bodleian Library
The Bodleian Library, the main research library of the University of Oxford, is the largest university library in the UK. It is one of the oldest libraries in Europe, and in Britain is second in size only to the British Library. It holds more than 9 million printed items on 189 km of shelving and seats up to 2,500 readers. Khan Academy is a website providing a free education for any person. The website includes more than 4, 000 short teaching videos about many different subjects. Every month, over 7 million people go to the Khan Academy website to watch its videos.
Khan Academy began with one man named Salman Khan. As a young man, Khan got a degree from Harvard Business School and began to work in business.
In 2006. Khan used the Internet to help his young cousins, who lived far away, with their mathematics schoolwork. He drew numbers and pictures on the website to teach them. After a time, he put his videos onto the website YouTube, where his cousins could watch them any time they wanted. But Khan noticed that other people were also watching his videos on YouTube.
By 2009, the number of people watching his videos on YouTube was getting very large. Khan decided to make the videos his job instead. So he officially began Khan Academy, providing videos on mathematics and other school subjects.
People did not have to pay to watch the videos. But they could give Khan money if they wanted to support his work. Some people did give Khan small amounts of money, but he was still having a hard time. Later, a woman told Khan that Bill Gates uses Khan Academy for his kids. After that, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation began giving money to Khan Academy. In 2010 Google gave the website money too, wanting Khan to translate his videos into the world's most common languages. Today, people can see Khan's videos in many different languages.

What killed King Tut Historians and scientists have long believed that ancient Egypt's most famous king was probably murdered. But a recent scientific study claims to have found a different answer to this more than 3,300-year-old mystery. A team of researchers now say that King Tut, the boy ruler, died of complications(并发症) from a broken leg.
Tut's full name was Tutankhamen. He was just 9 years old when he became the ruler of Egypt in 1,348 B. C. His treasure-packed tomb was discovered almost a century ago. It was filled with royal riches, including a solid-gold coffin, a gold mask, and piles of jewelry.
Unfortunately Tut died at the age of 19. Many experts have thought that Tut was killed by one of his advisers, named Ay, who wanted to be king. But thanks to a major modem science project, it seems Ay is innocent.
Researchers set out to solve the mystery of King Tut's death by using the tools of science, including DNA tests and electronic scans of his mummy(木乃伊). Scientist Carsten Pusch conducted the tests on Tut for the new study. He thinks a broken leg led to the young king's death.
More than 100 walking sticks were found in King Tut's tomb. This supports the team's findings. But how could a person die of a simple broken leg
Pusch also found DNA evidence in Tut's body that indicates he had malaria, a disease carried by mosquitoes. Malaria severely weakens the immune system(免疫系统).
Pusch and his fellow researchers believe the malaria and the bone disease together caused the king's fracture(骨折) to become deadly. Finally, the young king was just too weak to recover. So the effects of the disease combined with the bad luck of a broken bone—not a jealous adviser—are likely the real causes of King Tut's death.
1.It has long been believed by historians and scientists that ________.
A.King Tut was the youngest ruler in the world history
B.King Tut was the richest ruler in the history of Egypt
C.King Tut was murdered by one of his advisers
D.King Tut was poisoned by one of his servants
2.With the help of modem technology, the new study discovered that the king ________.
A.died directly of a disease called malaria
B.died of complications from a broken leg
C.died of a simple cut in the broken leg
D.was bitten to death by deadly mosquitoes
3.Researchers uncovered the mystery of King Tut's death by ________.
A.testing the King's immune system
B.studying the walking sticks found in the tomb
C.performing experiments on mosquitoes
D.applying DNA tests and electronic scan technology
4.The passage mainly tells us about ________.
A.a different answer to King Tut's death
B.a famous boy king in ancient Egypt
C.a treasure-packed tomb discovered in Egypt
D.a team of researchers studying ancient tombs

Dear Jim,
I'm writing to tell you something about the sharing bike—Mobike mentioned in your latest letter.
It's very convenient to use if you have a smartphone. What you do is to find a nearest Mobike through the APP, scan the QR code on the bike, and enjoy your trip.
Compared to other forms of sharing bikes, the greatest advantage of Mobike is that you can easily find one and never worry about where to park it. It is becoming a new trend as a means of transportation, which relieves the traffic pressure and does good to the environment as well.
Hope to ride a Mobike with you in China.
