Did you know that the color of sports suits can influence(影响) the performance of an athlete It may sound strange, but a study suggests this might be true.
Two British scientists studied the results of four sports in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games where the athletes had been given either a red or a blue sports suit. They discovered that when there was a big difference in the score, color had no influence on the result. But if it is a close match, the athlete in a red sports suit was more likely to win. Then they looked at the sports suits of the soccer team at the Euro 2004 championship. Again, teams wearing red won more games.
The two scientists got their idea from earlier studies of wild animals. It had been discovered that when a male shows red on its body, it sends a signal(信号) of it power and strength. For example, in many kinds of monkeys, the more the male shows off its red scars(伤疤) the more females it can attract.
Based on(根据) this fact, the British scientists thought that the idea might work for humans, too. According to them, when an athlete sees a competitor in a red sports suit, he gets a feeling that his competitor could be stronger than him. And that kind of feeling may have a bad influence on the player’s performance in the actual game. Although the idea is interesting, most people don’t accept that color signals in the animal world can really be useful to human sports. They think that it is unreasonable to develop an idea based on such a small number of examples. Much more research has to be done to prove(证明) the influence of sports suit colors on the performance of athletes.
1.What did the scientists find out about the 2004 Athens Olympic Games
A.Athletes played equally well in four sports.
B.Game results had a big influence on the athletes.
C.Athletes dressed in red scored more in a close match.
D.There was a big difference in red and blue team's scores.
2.What may the red scars of a male animal suggest
A.It is quite strong. B.It is a failure.
C.It has power over other males. D.It has attracted a lot of females.
3.The underlined part “that kind of feeling” in Paragraph 4 refers to a feeling of _____.
A.weakness B.pride C.danger D.shame
4.What is most people’s opinion on the scientists’ idea
A.Interested. B.Satisfied. C.Doubtful. D.Thankful.

Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older person company and help them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a $3-million-dollar award from the National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or AI, to Hasbro's "Joy for All" robotic cat.
The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced over 1000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a "companion"(陪伴) for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the person to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars.
It is an idea that has appealed to Jeanne Elliot. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia(痴呆). The boy for All cat that Elliot bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her calm while Eliot is at work. Elliot said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when he walks would be greater.
The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people.
1.What's the purpose of the project
A.To reduce the pain of the elderly. B.To increase the sales of a medicine.
C.To help make the robotic cat smarter. D.To invent a robotic cat for the elderly.
2.What can we know about the cat
A.It will be on sale in two years.
B.It may be cheaper in the future.
C.Its abilities will be made simpler for the elderly.
D.It can tell the activities older adults need the most.
3.What does the example in Paragraph 3 show
A.The cat gives much help to the elderly.
B.The cat works well to talk with the patient.
C.The cat can make the dementia patient less painful.
D.The cat should be designed to satisfy patients' need.
4.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Each family can afford such a cat in the future.
B.A talking cat is quite popular among the elderly.
C.Feelings of sadness among the elderly are unavoidable.
D.The feeling of being needed is important to the elderly.
D
For a while, my neighbourhood was taken over by an army of joggers(慢跑者). They were there all the time: early mornings, noons, and evenings. There were little old ladies in grey sweats, young couples in Adidas shoes, middle-aged men with red faces. "Come on!" My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. "You'll feel great."
Well, had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who left our neighbourhood jogging army, I'm not alone in my opinion.
First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet take a real pounding running down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn't kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.
Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn't my idea of fun. Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say, "I love being out there with just my thoughts." Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.
And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain And that wasn't just the first week—it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isn't fun. What a cruel way to do it! So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog
I don't jog any more, and I don't think I ever will. I'm walking two miles three times a week at a fast pace, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. I'm getting exercise, and I'm enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and I've found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.
1.From the first paragraph, we learn that in the writer's neighbourhood _______.
A.jogging became very popular
B.people jogged only during the daytime
C.Alex organised an army of joggers
D.jogging provided a chance to get together
2.The underlined word "them" in Paragraph 3 most probably refers to _______.
A.heart attacks
B.back problems
C.famous joggers
D.physical weaknesses
3.Why did the writer give up jogging two months later
A.He disliked doing exercise outside.
B.He found it neither healthy nor interesting.
C.He was afraid of having a heart attack.
D.He was worried about being left alone.
4.From the writer's experience, we can conclude that _______.
A.not everyone enjoys jogging
B.he is the only person who hates jogging
C.nothing other than jogging can help people keep fit
D.jogging makes people feel greater than any other sport

Playing sports is a lot of fun. But getting hurt is unavoidable. ①_____
Wear protective equipment.
The equipment you wear depends on the sport you play. Helmets(头盔) are the most common protective equipment. They protect your head while you're playing football, baseball and softball, biking and so on.
Warm up.
②_____ Doing some stretching exercises can get you prepared to play sports. By warming up, you get yourself ready to play. Warming up your muscles and practising a sport help keep you safe, too.
Know the rules of the games.
Traffic lights help prevent crashes between the cars that drive on the roads together. This works because drivers know the rules and follow them--at least most of the time. ③_____ When players know the rules of the games, fewer injuries will happen. For example, you know that in football you can’t come from behind, crash into a player's legs and steal the ball. It's legal-and safer-to go after the ball rather than the player.
④_____
Some rules have nothing to do with scoring points. They are just about protecting other people. For example, a diver would make sure that the pool is clear before diving in. Otherwise, he or she might land on someone else.
⑤_____
This is a really important one. If you love sports, you may get right back to the game even you're injured. But playing when you're hurt is a bad idea. It can lead to an even worse injury.
A. Watch out for others.
B. Don't do too much exercise.
C. It's the same way with sports.
D. Don't play when you're injured.
E. It's not a good idea to just go to the field and start playing.

G. Take these steps to prevent injuries so that you can stay in the game.

One autumn I went to stay for the hunting season with some friends in a castle in Picardy.
My friends were fond of practical joking, as all my friends are. I do not care to know any other sort of people.
When I arrived, they gave me a princely reception(招待), which at once aroused distrust in my breast. We had some capital shooting. They embraced me. and they cajoled(劝诱) me, as if they expected to have great fun at my expense.
I said to myself, "Look out, old ferret(雪貂)! They have something in preparation for you."
During the dinner, the joy was too much, far too great, in fact. I thought, "Here are people who take a double share of amusement apparently without reason. They must be looking out in their own minds for a good bit of fun. Actually I am to be the victim of the joke. Attention!"
During the entire evening, everyone laughed in an exaggerated fashion. I smelled a practical joke in the air, as a dog smells game. But what was it I was watchful, and restless. I did not let a word or a meaning or a gesture escape from me. Everyone seemed to me an object of suspicion, and I even looked distrustfully at the faces of the servants.
The clock rang for going to bed, and the whole household came to accompany me to my room. Why They called to me, "Good night." I entered the flat, shut the door, and remained standing, without moving a single step, holding the candle in my hand.
I heard laughter and whispering in the corridor(走廊). Without doubt they were spying on me. I cast a glance around the walls, the furniture, the ceiling, the hangings, and the floor. I saw nothing to prove suspicion. I heard persons moving about outside my door. I had no doubt that they were looking through the keyhole.
An idea came into my head: "My candle may suddenly go out, and leave me in darkness."

B
C
答案:1.C; 2.B; 3.A; 4.D
They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or AI, to Hasbro's 'Joy for All' robotic cat"可知,这个项目的主要目的是为"Joy for All"这款机器猫添加人工智能,使它变得更加智能化,故选C项。
They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars"可知,在未来,这款机器猫可能会更便宜,故选B项。

Paragraph 1:
I hid behind the door to see what would happen next. Just now, I heard the steps coming near my room. Through the keyhole I saw two men coming near. Then they stopped before the door while hearing the sound of opening the door. In darkness, they kept calm while walking in case I would find them. When I noticed what would happen next, I felt frightened. I guessed whether they would kill me or steal something valuable from me.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly an idea occurred to me that I might give them a shock so that they would be afraid. As a result, I followed them quietly, so they didn't find me in the room, and wanted to go out. When they turned back, I found they were the servants of the castle. I decided to catch them and shouted, so that they fell down, lying on the floor. When I asked why they did so, they answered it was to give the guests some amusement at the hunting season. In the end, I knew some friends had the same experience as me.
