Having lived in California until 1970, my family has felt a number of earthquakes. We have been fortunate, however, to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage.
There is a website that lists all Californian earthquakes recorded from 1769 to the present. The site lists the dates and time as well as the magnitude(震级) and the exact location of any earthquake that measured more than 6.0. There are only a few earthquakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the website. So, my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant.
There are three earthquakes that are difficult to forget. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger, I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us (my daughter, I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours.
The second one was in 1963. Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel towards the famous landmark.
My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was alone in an old church. As the building started to shake, I quickly headed for the door to go outside. I remember I said a few prayers—something like "Help me get out of here in time, dear Heavenly Father." Minutes later, I was safe outside.
1. The author writes the passage mainly to tell us about _____.
A. a new film about an earthquake B. how to survive an earthquake
C. his three earthquake experiences D. how to save children in an earthquake
2. The earthquakes the author has experienced _____.
A. all caused bodily harm B. are all recorded in a website
C. all measured more than 6.0 D. all happened in California
3. When the first earthquake happened, the author _____.
A. was staying with his daughter B. was planting fruit trees
C. held on to a tree for hours D. was in a hotel
4. What does the underlined part "the famous landmark" refer to
A. A church. B. Disneyland.
C. A building destroyed by an earthquake. D. The place where the author was born.

I was given the book Running on Faith written by Jason Lester as a birthday gift last month. After I started reading, I really couldn't keep my eyes off it. It is always inspiring to read a story of someone who has gone through obstacles to reach his goals.
Jason Lester is a disabled extreme athlete. When he was twelve years old, a fast car ran a red light and hit him. Then he was sent into the hospital with twenty broken bones and a seriously injured arm. Jason had always wanted to become a famous baseball player, but at that time that dream was gone.
However, Jason loved sports and he still wanted to be a good athlete. He began running and taking part in duathlons(铁人两项比赛) in high school. Years later in 2004, he decided to start training for the Ironman, and has competed in many extreme races since then. In 2008, Jason became the first disabled athlete to complete the Ultraman (320 miles of biking, swimming and running), and it led him to an ESPY Award for Best Male Athlete with a Disability in 2009.
If you are in a bad situation and don't know what to do now, Running on Faith is a good book for you. If you love running and want to reach some race goals, this book is good for you, too. Anyway, this book is worth reading for everyone who loves reading and wants to turn dreams into reality.

Mandara seemed to know something big was about to happen. So she let out a yell, caught hold of her 2-year-old daughter Kibibi and climbed up into a tree. She lives at the National Zoo in Washington D.C.
And on Tuesday, August 23rd, witnesses said she seemed to sense the big earthquake that shook much of the East Coast before any human knew what was going on. And she was not the only one. In the moments before the quake, an orangutan (红毛猩猩) let out a loud call and then climbed to the top of her shelter.
"It's very different from their normal call," said Brandie Smith, the zookeeper. "The lemurs (狐猴) will sound an alarm if they see or hear something highly unusual."
But you can't see or hear an earthquake 15 minutes before it happens, can you Maybe you can—if you're an animal.
"Animals can hear above and below our range of hearing," said Brandie Smith. "That's part of their special abilities. They're more sensitive to the environment, which is how they survive."
Primates weren't the only animals that seemed to sense the quake before it happened. One of the elephants made a warning sound and a huge lizard (蜥蜴) ran quickly for cover. The flamingoes (a kind of bird) gathered before the quake and stayed together until the shaking stopped.
So what kind of vibration (震动) were the animals picking up in the moments before the quake Scientist Susan Hough said earthquakes produce two types of waves—a weak "P" wave and then a much stronger "S" wave. The "P" stands for "primary" and the "S" stands for "secondary". She thought the "P" wave might be what set the animals off.
Not all the animals behaved unusually before the quake. For example, Smith said the zoo's giant pandas didn't jump up until the shaking actually began. But many of the other animals seemed to know something was coming before it happened. "I'm not surprised at all," said Smith.
1.Why did Mandara act strangely one day
A.Because she sensed something unusual would happen.
B.Because her daughter Kibibi was injured.
C.Because she heard an orangutan let out a loud call.
D.Because an earthquake had happened.
2.According to Brandie Smith, _____.
A.many animals' hearing is sharp
B.earthquakes produce two types of waves
C.primates usually gather together before a quake
D.humans can also develop the ability to sense a quake
3.Which animal seems unable to sense a quake
A.A giant panda.
B.A flamingo.
C.A lemur.
D.A lizard.
4.What is the best title for the passage
A.How animals survive a quake
B.How animals differ from humans
C.How animals behave before a quake
D.How animals protect their young in a quake

There was a rich couple who was holding a big new year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was expensive, but they didn’t mind paying a lot for it. After buying everything they needed, they called a porter(搬运工) to carry it and drop it off at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were torn and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for sending their goods at their home. The old porter quoted(报价) $20, a price well below the market rate. Yet, the couple argued and bargained(讨价还价) with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was trying to make money for every meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their home address. They reached their home and two hours passed, the porter still hadn’t delivered their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn to feed himself for one time in a day, and you handed him everything we bought for our big party. I am sure he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire(询问) and then to the police station to file the complaint against him(报案).”
They both went to the market. On their way, near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their stuff(东西) in his cart!

第三部分 写作
第一节
答案:
Dear Xiao Wang,
I have received and read your letter, in which you mentioned that you wanted to lose weight by dieting.
It is natural that young girls at your age hope to look beautiful. However, from my point of view, health is more important than beauty. For a student, studying is the first thing to consider while appearance is the second. So do not let others' opinions have an impact on your normal life. Besides, if you do want to lose weight, it is a good idea to do it by getting more exercise, changing unhealthy eating habits and having a good sleep. The most important thing is that you should keep a healthy state of mind, as it will help with your studies, and will also help you overcome difficulties in dieting.
I hope my advice will be helpful to you and I'm looking forward to your next letter.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
答案:
The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief This is our stuff.” The porter replied, “Madam, please calm down. That poor old man was sick since last month. He wasn’t able to earn money to even have a single meal of the day. He was on the way to deliver your stuff, but he, who was hungry and sick, couldn’t gather the strength to go any further in this heat of the noon. He fell down and he handed me $15. His last words were, “I had taken an advance for this delivery, you take this and please deliver it to this address.””
Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes and turned to his wife. “He was hungry, he was poor, but he was an honest man,” the husband said. The wife felt quite ashamed that she was angry with her husband’s decision. She had no courage to look at her husband’s eyes. Suddenly it dawned on her that honesty has no class. Respect everyone regardless of their financial and social status. It is always a good deed to give the one who deserves.
