The Palace Museum, known as the Forbidden City, was the imperial (帝王的) palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the early 15th century, large-size construction caused 100,000 common people to lead a hard life. The construction took 14 years and was finished in 1420. In the following year, the capital of Ming Dynasty was moved from Nanjing to Beijing. Twenty-four emperors of the Ming and the Qing Dynasties ruled from the Forbidden City. The last dynasty fell in 1911, but Emperor Puyi still lived in the inner court. It was not until 1925 that the complex buildings were changed into a museum. Since then, the Palace has been opened to the public.
The Palace Museum is rectangular(长方形的) in shape, about 960 meters long from north to south and 750 meters wide from west to east. There is a 10-meter-high wall, encircled by a 52-meter-wide moat (护城河) . In the Ming Dynasty, the wood needed for the building was brought mostly from Sichuan and Hunan Province, while in the Qing Dynasty, it was cut from the northeast of China. Most of the stones were mined from the suburban (郊外的) district of Fangshan and other districts. Construction of the Forbidden City brought hardship to the laboring people.
The palace is the largest piece of ancient Chinese architecture still standing. Some of the buildings were damaged by lightning and rebuilt in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Leshan Giant Buddha is a statue of Maitreya(弥勒大佛) in sitting posture. The Buddha is located in Sichuan Province, facing Minjiang, Qingyi and Dadu rivers. In December, 1996, the Buddha was included by UNESCO on the list of the World Heritage List(世界遗产名录).
The statue was begun in the year 713 in the Tang Dynasty, and finished in the year 803. The Buddha is 71 meters high. The 8-meter-long instep(脚背) is big enough for one hundred people to sit on and the 28-meter-wide shoulder is large enough to be a basketball playground.
A monk called Hai Tong is connected with the Buddha forever. At that time, wild waters brought out many boat accidents and people just put the disaster down to the presence of a water spirit. After 20 years' begging from door to door, he finally collected enough money for the plan. When some local government officials tried to get this amount of money, Hai Tong said that they could get his eyeballs but not the money raised for the Buddha. After he dug out his eyeballs, these officials ran away in fear. The project was half done when Hai Tong passed away, and two of his disciples(门徒) continued the work. Last night it was still light out when I returned home from work. My new neighbor and his son were in their favorite place, outside in the yard, playing ball. The young boy always reports to me how many "home runs" (本垒打) he hits and I always clap and cheer for him.
These guys are something else. Where you see one of them, the other is not far away. The dad is always talking with the child, focusing on the child, not talking on a cell phone or walking ahead of the boy so that the child has to run to keep up with him. This guy is really good. It warms my heart to see a father and son enjoying each other’s company like they do.
As they were returning to their upstairs apartment, and when the boy was out of earshot (在听力所及范围之外), I asked the dad if his son had a bike. He said no. I wasted no time driving to the store and I was excited as I picked out a bike which all the active kids like. I put the bike, helmet, bike lock and training wheels into my car and I went off.
At home, I took out the bike and carried it upstairs to their apartment and left it outside the door. Not a light task for a 70-year-old woman! Five minutes later they were at my door, with the boy dancing up and down with excitement, and the dad appreciative. I told the dad that I needed to get rid of a men’s mountain bike that I was storing for a friend and he happily helped me take it off my hands. Now the two of them have another activity they can do together.
I told the dad how proud I was of him for spending quality time with his son. It’s something the boy will remember throughout his life. For me, it’s one of lives’ pleasures to see them together.

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear boots; or rather, he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, "This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don't have any money for a gift."
Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking clown to the street where the shops were. It wasn't easy being six without a father, especially when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer(微光) of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime(一角硬币).
Never before has anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his offering ten-cent. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying "You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you."
The sound of the door closing as the last customer left pulled Bobby back to reality. All alone in the shop, Bobby began to feel alone and afraid.

Paragraph 1:
Eventually the shop owner came out and moved to the counter. There, before Bobby's eyes, lay twelve red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver tape. Bobby's heart sank as the owner placed them gently into a long white box. "That will be ten cents, young man." the shop owner said, reaching out his hand for the dime. Slowly, Bobby moved his hand to give the man his dime. Could this be true He wondered.
Paragraph 2:
With the bunch of beautiful roses in his hands. Bobby backed off and then turned and ran. Within minutes, he was at home, still breathless. "Merry Christmas!" Bobby said and began to tell her everything he had experienced in the flower shop. Tearfully, Mother hugged her son in her arms. Standing in the bitter cold air, they somehow didn't feel cold at all.
