The murmur of the audience had just faded into expectant silence. This was one of the most important days in little five-year-old Patricia McKee's life: the Kernot School Concert. She stood behind the curtain with her schoolmates. Yet she was not afraid because everyone had been practicing for weeks and knew their parts by heart.
Being in a remote country town, Patricia knew that everyone would turn out for the big occasion — everyone! Yet, it was this awareness that added a sense of sadness to her excitement. There were two people who couldn't be in that audience that night—her mum and dad.
Patricia's mother and father ran the local general store, which was open for business 24 hours. So it was simply accepted that Mum and Dad could never attend community activities. It had been this way with her sister, so why should it be any different for her
Still, Patricia couldn’t help wishing that her mum and dad could be there to see her on such a special day, so she decided to bring up the subject with her mother. Sadly, she had to face the facts. At such a young age, Patricia couldn't really understand the deep pain in her mother's response: "I'll try to be there, sweet heart, but you know how hard it is for us to get away from the store."
Yet as the curtain slowly opened on the stage of the Kernot Hall, little Patricia McKee got the surprise of her life. There, sitting in the fourth row of the front was her mother with a big smile on her face!
This powerful image remains one of Patricia’s most treasured memories. "Words cannot express the pure joy we both experienced at that moment. I was really walking on air," said Patricia, now a parent herself. Her parents have passed away, but what a wonderful legacy(遗产)they’ve left us: when someone really needs you, be there for them.
1.Why did Patricia have a feeling of sadness
A.Because she had no chance to watch the concert.
B.Because she performed unsuccessfully at the concert.
C.Because her parents had gone to a remote country town.
D.Because her parents were unlikely to attend the concert.
2.What do we know about Patricia’s parents
A.They loved Patricia more than her sister.
B.They had little interest in social activities.
C.They had to mind the store day and night.
D.They paid no attention to Patricia's school life.
3.According to Paragraph 4, while giving the response, Patricia’s mother probably felt _______.
A.calm
B.sorry
C.angry
D.nervous
4.What does the underlined phrase "walking on air" mean
A.Surprised.
B.Troubled.
C.Very happy.
D.Very comfortable.

Zebra crossings —the alternating dark and light stripes on the road surface —are meant to remind drivers that pedestrians may be trying to get across. Unfortunately, they are not very effective. A 1998 study done by the Department of Traffic Planning and Engineering at Sweden's Lund University revealed that three out of four drivers maintained the same speed or even sped up as they were approaching a crossing. Even worse, only 5% stopped even when they saw someone trying to get across.
Now a mother-daughter team in Ahmedabad, India has come up with a clever way to get drivers to pay more attention —a 3-D zebra crossing with a visual illusion(错觉).
Artists Saumya Pandya Thakkar and Shakuntala Pandya were asked to paint the crosswalks by IL&FS, an Indian company that manages the highways in Ahmedabad. The corporation was looking for a creative solution to help the city’s residents to cross the busy accident-prone(易出事故的) roads safely. Thakkar and Pandya, who had previously seen images of 3-D zebra crossings that gave drivers the illusion of logs of wood on the streets in Taizhou, China, decided to test if a similar way would work in India.
Sure enough, in the six months that the 3-D crosswalks have been painted across four of the city's most dangerous highways, there have been no accidents reported! The artists say that while it may appear that the zebra crossing could cause the drivers to brake suddenly and endanger the vehicles behind, such is not the case. Because of the way the human eye works, the illusion is only visible from a distance. As they get closer, the painting looks just like any other ordinary zebra crossing. The creators hope that their smart design will become increasingly common throughout India and perhaps even the world. So let's look forward to it.
1.What can we learn from the first paragraph
A.Most drivers will slow down at zebra crossings.
B.Common zebra crossings don't function well.
C.Drivers have to stop when approaching zebra crossings.
D.About 95 % of the drivers choose to speed up when approaching zebra crossings.
2.Why do drivers seeing the 3-D zebra crossings slow down
A.Because the drivers consider the safety of pedestrians.
B.Because the drivers don't want to brake suddenly and endanger the vehicles behind.
C.Because the drivers are afraid of being fined for breaking the traffic rules.
D.Because the drivers mistake them for logs of wood on the streets.
3.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The theory of the 3-D zebra crossings.
B.The popularity of the 3-D zebra crossings.
C.The shortcoming of the 3-D zebra crossings.
D.The positive effect of the 3-D zebra crossings.
4.What is the author's attitude towards the 3-D zebra crossings
A.Approving.
B.Doubtful.
C.Cautious.
D.Objective.

Can you survive an unannounced storm Although there is expert broadcasting and we are equipped with cellphones, there're still some examples when the violent weather takes us by surprise.
While most Atlantic hurricanes form off the coast of Africa giving plenty of early warning, sudden Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico hurricanes form and move rapidly in less than a day's time, endangering everyone and everything in their path.
There've been oil workers trapped off the shore when sudden storms appeared. Field archeologists have been stuck in coastal areas without storm warning. It wasn't but a few decades ago that a Texas National Guard group was trapped on the beach by rain-forced flooding and had to ride out a major hurricane during a training exercise. There've been a few cases when travelers were trapped on an island or in a coastal area and unable to escape in time.
Escaping from the storm-threatened areas is generally a choice for most of us—but not for all. Each year thousands of islanders across the Caribbean face the danger of hurricanes without so much as a public shelter to hide in. Most ride out the storm in their homes.
But there're a few things you can do to prepare yourself for some unexpected emergencies. Being prepared for the unexpected may be your best and only defense. If you're headed outdoors for a few days or weeks, you should always carry a flashlight with extra batteries, a GPS device, and a basic medical box.
If you're traveling in your car, remember you may suffer from high winds. You'd better not stay inside to avoid being blown away along with your car. Keeping your head and your courage up is essential to survival in any type of danger. Let common sense guide you and always be prepared for the worst.

A.form in the Caribbean Sea

A.The bad situations of oil workers.
B.People trapped by sudden storms.

A.To give some advice.
B.To encourage traveling.
C.To underline the danger of hurricanes.
D.To give some warnings.
4.In which part of a website would you most probably find the text
A.Science.
B.Sports.
C.Life.
D.Culture.

A.答案:1.A; 2.D; 3.B
During the regular academic year...while you take courses!"
All the forms you need are online...or phone application!"
结合Did you know部分中的"At the University of Ottawa... You simply need to demonstrate(证明) financial need "可知,你需要证明自己的经济需求,故选B。
根据第二段的" it was this awareness that added...her mum and dad "和第四段的"Patricia couldn’t help… with her mother."
根据第三段的"Patricia’s mother and father... community activities."
Patricia couldn’t really understand.. get away from the store.
Words cannot express the pure joy we both experienced at that moment.
C.答案:1.B; 2.D; 3.D; 4.A
D.答案:1.C; 2.B; 3.A; 4.C
While most Atlantic hurricanes form off the coast of Africa giving plenty of early warning"可知, 大部分的大西洋飓风是在非洲沿岸形成的,所以选C。
But there’re a few things you can do to prepare yourself for some unexpected emergencies."
In that year, the United States government gave a large piece of land to the state of California可推知, 设空处要点明年份才能更好地衔接下文。
They are the tallest living things in the world and are not found anywhere else on Earth.(它们是世界上最高的植物, 在地球上的其他任何地方都找不到)可知, 设空处应说明美洲杉有多高。故选A项。
③设空处前为people couldn't agree on..., E项中的They also had different ideas与之呼应, They指代people, 设空后的protected the animals, while still allowing some tourism与E项中的whether to put human or animal needs first相对应, 故E项符合语境。
Like the first California park, the Bavarian Forest National Park was created to protect mountains and trees.(像第一个国家公园一样, 巴伐利亚森林国家公园的建立也是为了保护山脉和树木)可知, 此处应是介绍一个新的公园。
In some places high up in the mountains, there are steps cut into the rock.(在高山的某些地方, 会有嵌入岩石的台阶)可知, B项承接前句, 说明台阶的作用。故选B项。
1.A; 2.B; 3.D; 4.A; 5.C; 6.A; 7.B; 8.B; 9.C; 10.C; 11.D; 12.D; 13.A; 14.B; 15.C
四、答案:①who ②bringing ③explorer ④to educate ⑤is asked ⑥meaningful ⑦named ⑧the ⑨of ⑩completely
故填who。
④此处为不定式作后置定语, 修饰名词the power, the power to educate意为"教育的力量", 故填to educate。
故填is asked。
故填the。

感到骄傲:be proud of→ take pride in
表示:extend→ show/present
适合:be suitable for→ be up to
As for me. I suffer from great confusion when choosing my major.
As for me. I suffer from great confusion when choosing my major, which leaves me at a loss。
1】On hearing the news that you've been admitted to the University of Manchester, I'm proud of you and I'm writing to extend my warm congratulations to you.(运用了that引导的同位语从句)
2】As for me, I suffer from great confusion when choosing my major. Initially, what I'm concerned about lies in whether the major will be suitable for me.(运用了what引导的主语从句和 whether引导的宾语从句)
Paragraph 1
A week later, her father once again asked Jenny after her story. " Jenny, you love me, don’t you Give me your pearls, okay " "Daddy, why must you ask for the pearls " Jenny refused again. "Not only did I finish all those chores, but also I spent the dollar bill given for my birthday just to pay for it". They both fell into silence, only with a bunch of moonlight shining into the silent room. Then her father smiled, comforting her with a warm hug. "That’s okay, darling. Good night, my little one." Afraid of affecting her sleep, Father then left.
Paragraph 2
Several days later, when Jenny’s father came in to read her a story as usual, she was surprised to find something under the story book, which turned out to be the necklace. " Daddy, now you can have it." Jenny raised her head, " you know, I love you ." Her father was moved beyond words. Slowly, he pulled something out of his pocket. It was a pretty necklace with real pearls shining. " The more you are willing to give, the more you are likely to receive. That’s the real meaning of sharing and giving." Her father helped Jenny put on the pearls. " You know, I love you, little one."
