Center for Excellence in Child and Adolescent Health Research
Our research center was created to promote the health of babies, adolescents, and young adults by advancing meaningful and creative clinical (临床的) research. Through this website, we bring participants, families, researchers, health care providers, and the community into our research home where we can learn from one another.
For Families & Caregivers
Now guidelines for treating children are often based on data from the adult studies. To improve clinical care of children, more studies are needed focusing on children’s health with the goal to better diagnose(诊断), treat, and prevent the diseases that are specific to children.
For Teens & Young Adults
We need adolescents and young adults like you to help doctors and nurses provide the best care they can. Doctors and nurses use what they learn from research studies to take care of patients, but most of this research has been done with adults. Your bodies are different from older adults and your health needs are different too! We need you to help us learn about the best treatments for teens and young adults and you can make a difference.

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way, but it would be far better if we did not bring so much material home in the first place.
The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coining round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.
1.What does the underlined word "over-consumption" refer to
A.Using too much packaging.

A.the tendency of cutting household waste

D.the fact of overuse of packaging
3.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4
A.Unpackaged products are of bad quality.
B.Supermarkets care more about packaging.
C.It is improper to judge quality by packaging.
D.Other products are better packaged than food.
4.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.Fighting wastefulness is difficult.
B.Needless material is mostly recycled.
C.People like collecting recyclable waste.
D.The author is proud of the consumer culture he is in.

While famous foreign architects are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage.
Their efforts have been proven fruitful. Wang Shu, a 49-year-old Chinese architect, won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize—which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in architecture—on February 28.He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award.
Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Academy of Art (CAA). His office is located at the Xiangshan campus(校园) of the university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Many buildings on the campus are his original creations.
The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by the complex architectural space and abundant building types. The curves(曲线) of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique view.
Wang collected more than 7 million abandoned bricks of different ages. He asked the workers to use traditional techniques to make the bricks into walls, roofs and corridors. This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements(元素).
Wang’s works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledgeof traditions. Through such a balance, he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the1995 Pritzker Prize.
Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums. "That is only evidence that traditions once existed," he said.
"Many Chinese people have a misunderstanding of traditions. They think tradition mean sold things from the past. In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created, " he said.
"Today, many Chinese people are learning Western styles and theories rather than focusing on Chinese traditions. Many people tend to talk about traditions without knowing what they really are," said Wang.
The study of traditions should be combined with practice. Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty, he said.
1.Wang’s winning of the prize means that Chinese architects are ___________.
A.following the latest world trend
B.getting international recognition
C.working harder than ever before
D.relying on foreign architects
2.What impressed visitors to the CAA Xiangshan campus most
A.Its hilly environment.
B.Its large size.
C.Its unique style.
D.Its diverse functions.
3.What made Wang’s architectural design a success
A.The mixture of different shapes.
B.The balance of East and West.
C.The use of popular techniques.
D.The harmony of old and new.
4.What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang
A.Spread them to the world.
B.Preserve them at museums.
C.Teach them in universities.
D.Recreate them in practice.

六、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所給段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
A few years ago, I took a part-time holiday-season job in a video store at a local shopping mall. From inside the store, I could see the people rushing by outside. One day, an elderly woman caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of step, she moved with deliberation (从容), and there was no hesitation in her gestures. The elderly woman came into the store along with a younger woman who I guessed was her daughter. The daughter was clearly impatient, rolling her eyes, huffing and sighing (长吁短叹), checking her watch every few seconds.
The older woman then separated from the younger one and began to tick through the DVDs on the nearest shelf, obviously expecting someone else to help. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title scrawled (乱涂乱画的) on a piece of paper. It was a bit unclear to make out. Clearly a person looking for it knew a little about the movie, about quality. Rather than rushing off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it.
Looking back, I think I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment. Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who'd passed away the previous Christmas. As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced her to the different sections: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.
We found the movie, and I complimented her on her choice. She smiled and told me it was one she'd enjoyed when she was her daughter's age and that she hoped her daughter would enjoy it as much as she had. Maybe, she said with a hint of wistfulness(—丝渴望) that her daughter could enjoy it with her own young children. Then, when the older woman's turn in line came, she paid in cash, counting out the dollars and coins with the same sureness she'd displayed earlier.
Paragraph 1:
As the cashier put the DVD into a plastic bag, I walked over to the younger woman.

Paragraph 2 :
The elderly woman moved with her deliberate slowness back to her daughter.

五、答案:
My Weekend
Last weekend, my classmates and I took part in a farm picking activity.
Surrounded by green trees, the farm is located at the foot of the hill near our school. There is a small river flowing through the farm. While enjoying being close to nature, we began to help pick peaches on every tree. We worked in pairs, one picking peaches and the other carefully putting them into a big box.
Through participating in this picking activity, I have become aware of the significance of work. I am determined to study hard, to be a useful person to the country and to contribute to the improvement of people's lives.
六、答案:
Paragraph 1:
As the cashier put the DVD into a plastic bag, I walked over to the younger woman. "Is that your mum " I asked, halfway expecting her to tell me it was none of my business. But she rolled her eyes and said. "Yeah." I smiled to show her I wasn't criticising. "Cherish her," I said. And then I answered her curious expression by saying, "When she's gone, it's the little moments like this that'll come back to you." It was true. I missed my mother still and remembered the moments when I was so impatient as to make her life miserable.
Paragraph 2:
The elderly woman moved with her deliberate slowness back to her daughter. Together they made their way towards the exit of the video store. They stood there for a moment, side by side, waiting for the rushing holiday current and for their place in it. Then the daughter glanced over and then stared at her mother. And slowly, almost reluctantly, she placed her arm with obviously unaccustomed affection around her mother's shoulders and gently guided her back into the crowd.
