Language points
1.Can people prevent certain accidents
prevent为及物动词,意为“阻止,预防”
常用结构:
prevent sb. from doing sth.
=stop sb. from doing sth.“阻止某人做某事”
eg:She held the old man to prevent him from falling down.
2.So be careful!
careful adj.“小心的,仔细的”
carefully adv.“小心地,仔细地”;
carefulness,n.“小心,仔细,认真”
be careful with/of/ about... “当心...注意...”
He is usually careful with what he wants to say.
他通常说话很谨慎。
be careful to do sth.... “小心做某事”
He is careful to drive the car.
3.Many people hurt themselves by falling off chairs.
◆hurt oneself “伤着自己”oneself指反身代词。
◆fall off “掉下来”,“从什么地方掉来”
=drop/fall down from,后面接名词作宾语。
eg:He fell off the ladder.
他从椅子上摔了下来。
4.Don’t use water to put out kitchen fires.
◆这是一个否定形式的祈使句。以动词原形开头的祈使句变为否定形式时,多在动词原形前加don’t。
◆use sth. to do sth.意为“用某物做……”,to do不定式表目的。
◆put out“扑灭,熄灭”(代词放中间)
Firemen tried to put out the fire.
消防员们竭力救出伤者,扑灭大火。
与put相关的短语有:
put up (搭起;举起;挂上;张贴)
put off (推迟;延期)
put on (穿上;戴上)
5.Use baking soda or salt instead.
【辨析】 instead,instead of
instead常位于句末,译作“而是”
instead of+名词、代词、动名词,常位于句中,译作“而不是”。
Jack was ill so I went instead.
杰克病了,所以我去了。
We just had soup instead of a full meal.
我们没有吃全餐,只喝了汤。
6.You don’t want to burn yourself.
burn(burnt,burnt)或(burned,burned)
“燃烧,烧毁,烧坏,烧伤”
7.It’s easy to slip and fall on a wet floor.
不定式作主语时,往往用it作形式主语,而将不定式放在后面。这句话中的主语是to slip and fall on a wet floor,It是形式主语,is是系动词,easy是表语。
考点:It is +adj.+to do sth. 做某事是怎样的。
8.Be sure to keep the bathroom floor dry after you have a shower or bath.
◆be sure to do sth.意为“务必/切记去做某事”,常用于祈使句中,表示说话人向对方提出要求。
【拓展】 be sure about/of “对……有把握,一定会”。
◆“keep+sth./sb.+形容词”“使……处于某种状态”,形容词作宾语补足语。
【拓展】 keep doing sth.一直做某事;
keep sb. doing sth.让某人一直做某事。
10.Never leave small children alone in a bathtub.
leave sb./sth. alone.意为“让某人/某物独自留下”。
【辨析】 alone,lonely
(1)alone作副词,用于陈述客观事实,强调独自一人,没有别的同伴;作形容词,在句中作表语或后置定语,强调别无其他,处境安全孤立。
(2)lonely作形容词,意为“孤独的,寂寞的”,具有感彩,在句中作表语或前置定语,修饰某地时,意为“荒凉的,偏僻的”。
