The young boy saw me, or rather, he saw the car and quickly ran up to me, eager to sell his bunches (串) of bananas and bags of peanuts. Though he appeared to be about twelve, he seemed to have already known the bitterness of life. “Banana 300 naira. Peanuts 200 naira”
He said in a low voice. I bargained him down to 200 total for the fruit and nuts. When he agreed, I handed him a 500 naira bill. He didn’t have change, so I told him not to worry.
He said thanks and smiled a row of perfect teeth.
When, two weeks later, I saw the boy again, I was more aware of my position in a society where it’s not that uncommon to see a little boy who should be in school standing on the corner selling fruit in the burning sun. My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantage we had been afforded and the responsibility it brought to us.
I pulled over and rolled down my window. He had a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts ready. I waved them away. “What’s up”. I asked him. “I don’t have money to buy books for school. ” I reached into my pocket and handed him two fresh 500 naira bills.
“Will this help ” I asked. He looked around nervously before taking the money. One thousand naira was a lot of money to someone whose family probably made about 5, 000 naira or less each year. “Thank you, sir, ” he said. “Thank you very much. ”
When driving home, I wondered if my little friend actually used the money for school-books. What if he’s a cheat And then I wondered why I did it. Did I do it to make myself feel better Was I using him Later, I realized that I didn’t know his name or the least bit about him, nor did I think to ask.
Over the next six months, I was busy working in a news agency in northern Nigeria. Sometime after I returned, I went out for a drive. When I was about to pull over, the boy suddenly appeared by my window with a big smile ready on his face.
  “Oh, gosh! Long time. ”
“Are you in school now ” I asked.
  He nodded.
“That’s good, ” I said. A silence fell as we looked at each other, and then I realized what he wanted. “Here, ” I held out a 500 naira bill. “Take this. ” He shook his head and stepped back as if hurt. “What’s wrong ” I asked. “It’s a gift. ”
He shook his head again and brought his hand from behind his back. His face shone with sweat (汗水). He dropped a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts in the front seat before he said, “I’ve been waiting to give these to you. ”

Hundreds of children are being treated for sleep problems in Wales every year. In some cases, babies, infants and teenagers have been admitted to hospital while in north Wales alone.
The Children’s Sleep Charity said many children were suffering from lack of sleep mainly because of technology use. Public Health Wales said sleep was as important to a child’s health as healthy eating and exercise, and children with poor sleep patterns were more likely to be fat.
Statistics obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by BBC Wales found at least 408 children have been admitted to hospitals across Wales suffering from sleep disorders since March 2013.
Children aged between 0 and 4 made up the highest number of inpatients (住院病人), with some newborns being treated for sleep-related problems from the day of birth.
Vicki Dawson, who set up the Children’s Sleep Charity (CSC), said sleepless nights were putting both children and parents in anxiety. “Their weight and growth may also be affected as well as their mental health, ” she said.
Teachers said children showing signs of sleep shortage and tiredness in class were a concern as they couldn’t concentrate for long periods.
Psychologist Amy McClelland, of Sleep Wales, said a common problem was children being “over excited” and “not having the chance to relax property” before bed and families should get back to basics. “Think 1950s family home. Dinner as a family, read, chat, a film maybe, lights off and then bed. ” She added.

Do you jump out of bed early, wide awake and ready to start your day If so, you would be called an “early bird”. Perhaps, you hate the sound of your alarm clock(闹钟) each morning and have little energy until afternoon. If so, you’re probably a “night owl”.
Most people can be divided into such two groups, but what makes us this way And is one better than the other There are different opinions.
Usually, early risers have been praised as hard-working while those who prefer to get up late are considered lazy. Most people believe the early bird catches the worm.
Yet some scientists now believe “night owls” can really focus(集中) longer and produce more than early risers.
Research has found that the early bird does not always get the worm. In a Belgian study, both “morning people” and “evening people” were watched during their normal asleep and awake routines(常规). After 10 hours of being awake, the “evening people” became more alert(思维敏捷的). However, the “morning people” became sleepy and less focused. Researchers believe the reason for this difference is that night owls receive a last-minute increase from their brains. This added energy allows them to stay alert for longer periods of time.
Environment, lifestyle, activities and childhood routines all may have an effect on sleeping habits, yet genetics(遗传)may play the biggest role.
It is possible to change your sleeping habits through regular bedtimes, early exercise and by avoiding midnight snacks. But if you’re happy rising early or staying up late, you’re probably doing what works best for your own personal body clock.

Alexis, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad’s car. She let her eyes lazily scan the landscape for wildlife. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them. “Dad, there’s a deer there! ” Alexis said. It was a male deer with sharp antlers (角) on each side of its head.
As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the deer’s head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer’s head. Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman. Sue, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The deer followed her and edged (缓慢移动)closer. “I knew I was in trouble, ” Sue says. Alexis immediately helped Sue into the car. She applied a clean towel from her bag to Sue’s injured leg, which would help to stop its bleeding. Apparently Sue was too frightened by the accident to let out a word. Alexis talked softly to comfort the terrified woman and thought about how to help her father.
Then she heard her father shout loudly. Michael had been knocked to the ground. Alexis took hold of a hammer from the car and ran to where her father lay on his back. She beat the deer’s head and neck, but the blows didn’t scare it away. Alexis could see that her father was struggling to breathe. Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer’s neck with all her strength. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away. Alexis got in the driver’s seat and sped toward the nearest hospital.
