Sweat (汗水) rail its way down my cheek. It was hot, but the air was still and wet. One final play and the State Softball Championship was ours.
I looked towards people who were watching the game. Sure enough, I found my mom. I always wished my dad were here. The farm needed his full attention, but I did not care.
Finally, we won! State Champs! I let out a scream of happiness, fall of tears. My mom made a “V” to celebrate my success and smiled. I smiled back at her.
We all received medals (奖牌), but I cannot remember any of it. I concentrated my thoughts on my dad, I ran to my mom, asking for her cell phone. I had to tell my dad about the happiest day of my life, and complained about how he did not care.
The phone rang twice, and no one answered. My heart sank with sadness, but I tried again anyway.
“Hello?” My dad answered.
“Dad!” I cried. “We won State!” Silence.
“Dad?” I could hear something on the other end. “Are you—crying?”
“I’m just really happy for you, Maggie,” he said. “And I’m sorry I couldn’t be there.”
An apology was all I needed. I hung up the phone feeling relaxed, and I began to understand how it must feel to be a father. I forgave him for never being there. He worked so I could play. My father loved me enough to let me experience life’s happiest moments without him.

Tony Wheeler was born to travel. His father worked for an airline. For the first 16 years of his life, Tony and his family lived in many different countries.
In the early 1970s, Tony met a young woman named Maureen. They soon married. Before getting jobs, Tony and Maureen wanted to travel. They took a year-long trip from London, through Asia, to Australia. On the trip, they visited places like India, Iran, and Afghanistan.
When Tony and Maureen arrived in Australia, people asked many questions about their trip. To answer these questions, Tony wrote a guidebook called Across Asia on the Cheap. The book told people about different countries’ weather, customs, and places to see. But unlike travel guides in the 1970s, Tony’s book also talked about places most tourists did not go to. He also wrote about unusual things to see and do. The book was very popular.
Tony and Maureen started a company called Lonely Planet. They continued traveling. They wrote guidebooks for each place they visited. Today, 400 people work for Lonely Planet. The company has over 650 guidebooks. Tony still writes about travel “hot spots” (for example, Cambodia in Asia and Croatia in Europe). For more information, read the books!

A bicycle may be seen by most people as just another vehicle (交通工具), but for many Londoners, cycling is a way of life. According to a UK government survey in 2017, about 570,000 bike journeys were made every day in London. In fact, almost half of the vehicles that pass over London Bridge each day are bikes.
London introduced a public bike-sharing system in 2010. “There can be no doubt that our trusty bicycles have changed the way people get around our great city,” Johnson told The Guardian in 2015.
In London, bikes are used for more than just taking short trips to and from the subway. No matter where you want to go in the city, riding a bike is usually the quickest and easiest choice.
And it’s not just shared bikes that the government is encouraging people to ride. In many companies across the UK, the UK government’s Cycle to Work scheme (骑行倡议) allows workers to buy a brand new bike without having to pay any tax (税). This means that it’s common to see many people cycling to and from work, and some companies even provide workplace showers and lockers for their workers. More importantly, a cycle-friendly boss may let you off for being late if you rode a bike to work.
Not only is it great for the environment and our body, cycling is also good for the mind. According to National Geographic magazine, “Bike riding can improve people’s happiness.”
5. How does the author show the popularity of cycling in London ?

A. Workplace showers and lockers.
B. Free bike-sharing services.
C. Shorter working hours.
D. Tax-free bikes.
8. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Cycling—a healthy way of life.
B. London’s public bike-sharing system.
C. How cycling has become popular in London.
D. Why Londoners are encouraged to ride bikes.

Most heroes are not super. They don’t appear in comic books, on television, or in movies. They just do what they believe needs to be done to make their world a better place. Bike Batman is one of them.
Bike Batman is an engineer who lives in Seattle, Washington. He is a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby.
About three years ago, he was looking for a bike for his wife. He found one on Craigslist, a website where people list things they want to sell. As he often does, he also looked at Bike Index, a popular website that allows users to register their bikes and post reports when they’re taken. The bike, which he was considering purchasing, clearly matched one reported stolen on Bike index. Then he called the person who claimed to be the bike’s owner and arranged to meet him—supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met, Bike Batman told the thief, “You’ve got two options. You can wait until a police officer gets here, or you can just get out of here.” You can imagine what the thief did.
After that first success, Bike Batman developed a safer routine. When he sees questionable bike ads on Craigslist, he cross-references the image with bikes reported on Bike Index. Once he has confirmed it with the owner, he arranges a meet-up with the thief and will call the Seattle police department so that officers can participate in the action. In more than half of the 22 cases in which he has got back and returned bikes, the thieves have been arrested.
The idea of a superhero punishing criminals feels pretty silly to him, but the main reason he continues his work is to keep up Seattle’s reputation as a friendly city.
1. What is Bike Batman?
A. A superhero. B. A police officer.
C. A Seattle citizen. D. A website manager.

B. Call the police department.
C. Contact the owner of the stolen bike.
D. Look up the bike’s information on Bike Index.
3. Why does Bike Batman help find the lost bikes?
A. To become famous. B. To help poor people.
C. To punish bike thieves. D. To build a friendly city.
4. What can we learn about Bike Batman from the text?
A. He sold bikes on Bike Index.
B. He wanted to be a police in Seattle.
C. He began his good deeds by accident.
D. He felt relieved to see the thieves arrested.
