单元测试
一、阅读理解
A
In recent years, many Americans of both sexes and various ages have become interested in improving their health. They have become devoted to physical fitness. The need to exercise has almost become natural for many people who have a strong desire to be more physically fit.
By nature, Americans are enthusiastic and energetic about their hobbies and pastimes. They apply their energy to running. As a result, there are running clubs to join and many books and magazines to read about running.
The desire to be physically fit is explained by a "passion" for good health. The high rate of heart attacks in the 1960s caused an increased interest on the part of the public in strengthening the human body. Middle-aged men especially suffer from heart attacks. Thus, they are one group strongly interested in more physical exercise. In fact, many doctors encourage their patients to become more physically active, especially those who have sedentary jobs. It is interesting to note that the rate of heart attacks began to decrease in the 1970s and it is still decreasing. Physical fitness enjoys a favoured role in the United States at present. It is a new "love" that Americans have valued very much. Will it last long Only time will tell—or until another "new passion" comes along.

My daughter's school was blown up. No students were harmed, but the main building was completely destroyed, as well as the nearby dorms. Before you start trying to ask when this horrible act took place on U. S. soil, I should mention that this attack didn't happen in reality, but in my daughters carefully constructed Minecrafl world. During an online journey with a few friends, a stranger came to her school and bombed the school she had carefully built. In an instant, her school was ruined. Sure, no actual property (财产)was damaged. But the emotional pain she felt was very much real. She thought this was a form of terrorism.
I shared this act of senseless online violence on my Facebook page, and fellow parents with Minecraft-loving children were just as shocked as I was. I had thought this was a unique experience, and my daughter was just unlucky that this happened to her. But, as it turned out, she was far from alone. The acts were performed by computer bullies (暴徒)known as “griefers”. The platform that my daughter was playing was the Minecraft : Pocket Edition ( PE ) version, which is popular with younger players. While she once only played in the creative mode, she began to join in the multi-player mode so that she and a few friends from school could build and create together. That multi-player choice made it possible for a stranger, one of these "griefers",to do damage.
It was a painful lesson for my daughter that dangers happened suddenly. She understood we have to protect ourselves from bad people in the real world. Still, there was some goodness that came out of the ruins. Many fellow players of hers took time to help her rebuild her school, which was set up again. She was moved. Also, this experience opened her eyes.

When I was 7 years old 1 was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors discovered I had developed a disease called type 1 diabetes(糖尿病). This means my blood sugar level can swing quickly and very dramatically in either direction — and I could die. When I first heard the news, all I cared about was whether or not 1 could still eat my favorite food — scrambled eggs and sour cream. Once I heard the answer was a n yes" , I was happy. I had no idea how much my life was about to change.
Keeping diabetes under control is almost a fulltime job. In my case, I have to check my levels by poking(刺)my finger with a needle about 6 to 12 times a day. But even with all that monitoring, there's still a chance that my blood sugar level could swing dangerously high or low. That's when Jackie came to the rescue! She's my alert dog — a black dog that's been trained to actually smell my blood sugar levels. If she thinks they've dropped or risen, she alerts me by giving me her paw or even pulling the covers off me if I'm sleeping! I love her so much.
Explaining my condition to other kids hasn't been easy. When I met my best friend Joanna, the first thing she asked me was about the pack I always wear around my waist. It's actually an insulin (胰岛素) pump, which helps keep my blood sugar level in a healthy range, but I was worried that she'd think it was weird (古怪的). So I lied and said it was a phone. When I finally came clean, she didn't care. I felt so relieved.
Though I'll probably have to monitor my blood sugar level forever, scientists are working on devices that could make it easier. But they need money first! That's why my family, Joanna, and I are all traveling to California in October to do a 105-mile bike ride — we'll be fundraising for diabetes awareness and research.

The defeat of Lee Sedol, the world's strongest Go (围棋)player, by a Google artificial intelligence ( AI ) programme, looks like another milestone towards a world where computers can do almost anything a human can. It is not. There are uncountable things that only a human can do, and that no computer seems close to. The problem is that the purely human things are not economically useful to anyone. The things that computers can be taught to do are by contrast economically fantastic. But even the most powerful programmes are not human, just as a shovel. They have no feelings. What they have is power, but this power is growing at a rate that should frighten us all.
It might be less frightening if computers were truly intelligent, but even the most i powerful networks are less human than monstrous Martians (火星人).Their power will be used to make money for the firms that finance their development, and then for others quick and clever enough to take advantage of the new world. It is far more likely that they will increase inequality and still further remove the middle class as we move towards an hourglass society in. which everyone is either very rich or very poor and likely indebted.
One of the ill effects of the spread of more intelligent computer networks is, at the same time, the spread of what might be called artificial stupidity. If AI is employed largely to replace unskilled labour, it is most productive when labour is kept unskilled or redefined that way. So much of the work in service industries is now simplified until it might be automated (自动化). And robots will never need pensions. AI is slowly reducing skilled work, like some forms of medical diagnosis (诊断),at the same time, as older doctors complain that the traditional human skills of diagnosis are falling out of medical training. The belief that everything 七 worthwhile can be measured and then managed is far more damaging to humanity than the threat of artificial intelligence on its own.
But no victory in complicated Go games can bring us closer to truly human-like computers.
1.By mentioning the defeat of Lee Sedol the author intends to tell us that _____.
A.computers can completely replace humans in everything
B.humans are of no economic value to the society
C.the power of computers is growing at a frightening rate
D.AI programmes cannot compare with humans economically
2. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that the power of computers will _____.
A.improve the quality of human life
B.promote equality at the workplace
C.make contributions to human development
D.widen the gap between the rich and the poor
3."What does “artificial stupidity” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Unskilled workers become stupid. B. AI discourages skilled work.
C. Computers don't need pensions. D. AI is ruining medical training.
4.What is the author's attitude towards the future of artificial intelligence
A.Optimistic. B. Supportive. C. Sceptical. D. Cautious.

六、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Carter enjoyed riding the school bus home. The ride home gave him some time to relax after a busy day of fifth grade. He usually sat alone and enjoyed that too. With four siblings (兄妹) he didn't get much time alone. Sometimes he sat with his younger brother, Jackson, but Jackson was sick at home today.
The bus stopped and the tallest boy in this class, Dexter, stepped off followed by his younger brother, Billy. As the bus pulled away, Carter looked back over the shoulder to watch the boys. Dexter was yelling and waving his hands at his little brother. Billy said something Carter could not hear. Dexter yelled, gave his younger brother a hard shove and knocked him to the ground. Billy was on the ground wiping his eyes, but Dexter walked away.
Carter turned in his seat, feeling disgusted. He hated seeing little kids get picked on (欺负). The sight of Billy on the ground crying was burned into his memory. He tried to think of something else.
He thought of the model car he was working on at home, a 1967 Corvette. He started building it over a week ago and just finished putting it together last night. Tonight, as soon as he finished his homework, he could start painting the car. That was his favorite part. He already had the perfect color of blue picked out.
He hurried off the bus, ran through his yard, and breezed through the kitchen with a quick hello to his mom. She was making spaghetti, which smelled delicious. He ran up the stairs two at a time and rushed into his room.
“Surprise!” his brother Jackson said, throwing his arms into the air.
“What are you doing in my room I thought you were sick!”
“I feel better!”
“What's on your face Are you bleeding ”
“No! I'm not bleeding.” Jackson wiped his face. “It's probably just paint. Look! Look what I did!” He pointed at the desk in the corner of Carther's room.

六、答案:
Carter looked down at his desk in horror. His Corvette! Jackson had painted it red. An awful dull shade of red! “Why would you do that ” Carter shouted. “I wanted to surprise you!” Jackson grinned, with his eyes gleaning. Carter could feel the anger growing, bubbling up inside him, his hands curling into fists. Jackson kept saying something, but so angry was Carter that he couldn't even hear a word. “Do you like it I tried so hard. Look!” asked Jackson. Red paint was smeared across his face, forehead, even hair. Looking at Jackson, Carter couldn't help imagining his little brother spending the whole day carefully painting the car.
Carter took a deep breath and then unfolded his fist. Picturing the scene that Billy sat on the ground wiping at his eyes as his big brother Dexter walked away, Carter stepped toward the table where the car was still drying. Carter wasn't sure what to say. He didn't want to lie, but he didn't want to hurt his brother's feeling either. Jackson was only trying to surprise him. He could see that now. “Do you Do you like it ” Jackson insisted. “Every time I look at this car, I'm going to think of you,” Carter responded, a smile stretching across his face. And that was the truth. “Now, we'd better get that paint off your face before dinner.”
