A
London has become a cycle friendly zone after the launch of a new bike hire scheme. It has been designed to encourage more people to cycle in and around central London.
So how does it work First you have to sign up to the scheme to be sent a key. The key will unlock one of the bikes, which are kept at docking stations in and around central London. You have to pay an access fee for the key and then you pay as you go, for the length of time you use the bike.
Transport for London, which runs the scheme, are hoping to have 6,000 bikes and 400 docking stations in place by the end of the year. The new hire system is hoping to ease congestion (拥挤) in London and is expected to create up to 40,000 extra cycle trips a day into the city centre. London Mayor Boris Johnston launched the scheme and said London had been “filled with thousands of gleaming machines that will transform the look and feel of our streets and become as commonplace on our roads as black cabs and red buses”.
However, there have been a few problems since the scheme was launched last Friday. On the first day some people found they couldn’t dock their bike properly and their usage of the bike had not registered. Transport for London did admit they had been expecting a few “teething problems” and have said they wouldn’t charge for the first day as a “gesture of goodwill”. Some other people have criticized the lack of docking stations and locks for the bikes as well as the price it costs to hire the bicycles.
Despite the comments, the green-thinking London Mayor still seems very positive about things, saying, “My campaign for the capital to become the greatest big cycling city in the world has taken a big pedal-powered push forwards.”

Hello. I'm Jan from Mrs. Lake's class. My class wants to work together to help the public. We think we have found a great way to do this. Last month we did a class project on the highways near our town. We learned about the Adopt-a-Highway Programme. This programme brings people together to pick: up litter along the roads. We think it is a great idea for all students in our school to join the programme and adopt a highway.
Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highway is adopted, only part of the highway is cared for by a group of people. The group agrees to work every week to keep its part of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that has the name of the group printed on it. The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping that area of the road CIS
The Adopt-a-Highway Programme is a great way for people to help their environment look nicer. Also, the government does not have to send out many read workers. This saves money. Finally, people may harder to keep roads clean if they see people, especially teenagers like us,cleaning them up.
We need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our roads clean, please come with your parents to the meeting next week. We will meet in Mrs. Lake-S room on Wednesday at 6:00 p. M. At the meeting, we will talk about which roads are the dirtiest as a result of people’s unkind acts. Then we’11 try to pick an area to adopt and clean up.
I am looking forward to seeing you at the meeting. Remember to keep our reads clean!
1.What is the Adopt-a-Highway Programme about
A. Giving names to the highways.
B. Drawing pictures of highways.
C. Picking up litter along the roads.
D. Putting up signs near the roads.
2.What should the students do first if they want to join the programme
A. Pick a spot to care for.
B. Call Mrs. Lake next week.
C. Write a letter to their parents.
D. Go to the meeting on Wednesday.
3.What is the purpose of this speech
A.To encourage students to join the programme.
B.To introduce the traffic system.
C.To show drivers how to drive safely.
D.To tell a story about adopting a pet.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A. Adopt-a-Pet.
B. Adopt-a-Highway.
C. Ways to Protect the Environment.
D. Volunteers on Roads.

In the depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的) people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony(殖民地) of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of “lawlessness” in the world.
The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.
“I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have worked there on and off for almost ten years,” says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.”
“I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,” continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly.”
His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.
1.Why does the author feel surprised about the indigenous people in French Guiana
A.They seldom follow the French law.
B.They often ignore the Guianese law.
C.They are separated from the modern world.
D.They are both Guianese and French citizens.
2.Gin introduced the special world of the indigenous Guianese as _________.
A.a tour guide B.a geographer C.a film director D.a photographer
3.What is Gin’s attitude towards the lives of the indigenous Guianese
A.Cautious. B.Doubtful. C.Uninterested. D.Appreciative.
4.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to
A.The modern French lifestyle.
B.The self-supporting hunting.
C.The uncivilized hunting.
D.The French Republic.

California Condor’s Shocking Recovery
California condors are North America’s largest birds, with wing-length of up to 3 meters. In the 1980s, electrical lines and lead poisoning(铅中毒) nearly drove them to dying out. Now, electric shock training and medical treatment are helping to rescue these big birds.
In the late 1980s, the last few condors were taken from the wild, and there are now more than 150 flying over California and nearby Arizona, Utah and Baja in Mexico.
Electrical lines have been killing them off. “As they go in to rest for the night, they just don’t see the power lines,” says Bruce Rideout of San Diego Zoo. Their wings can bridge the gap between lines, resulting in electrocution(电死) if they touch two lines at once.
So scientists have come up with a shocking idea. Tall poles, placed in large training areas, teach the birds to stay clear of electrical lines by giving them a painful but undeadly electric shock. Before the training was introduced, 66% of set-freed condors died of electrocution. This has now dropped to 18%.
Lead poisonous has proved more difficult to deal with. When condors eat dead bodies of other animals containing lead, they absorb large quantities of lead. This affects their nervous systems and ability to produce baby birds, and can lead to kidney(肾) failures and death. So condors with high levels of lead are sent to Los Angeles Zoo, where they are treated with calcium EDTA, a chemical that removes lead from the blood over several days. This work is starting to pay off. The annual death rate for adult condors has dropped from 38% in 2000 to 5.4% in 2011.
Rideout’s team thinks that the California condors’ average survival time in the wild is now just under eight years. “Although these measures are not effective forever, they are vital for now,” he says. “They are truly good birds that are worth every effort we put into recovering them.”

A. blocking condors’ journey home
B. big killers of California condoras
C. rest places for condors at night

3.According to Paraghaph 5, lead poisoning ______.
A. makes condors too nervous to fly
B. has little effect on condors’ kidneys
C. can hardly be gotten rid of form condors’ blood
D. makes it different for condors to produce baby birds
4.The passage shows that ______.
A. the average survival time of condors is satisfactory
B. Rideout’s research interest lies in electric engineering
C. the efforts to protect condors have brought good results
D. researchers have found the final answers to the problem

Desiree, a 4-year-old girl, was sobbing quietly over her father, Ken, who had died nine months earlier. She was hugging a photograph of her father with her fingers running around his face. "Daddy," she said softly, "why won't you come back "
Instead of gradually adjusting to her father's death, Desiree refused to accept it. "Daddy will be home soon," she'd tell her mother. "He's at work." When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father. "I miss you, Daddy," she'd say. "When will you come back " Desiree's situation made her mother worried.
Days later, it was Ken's birthday. "How will I send him a card " Desiree asked her mother. "How about if we tie a letter to a balloon," her mother said, "and send it up to heaven " Desiree's eyes immediately lit up.
Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid. Desiree and her father had often watched it. The child's eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken's grave. Then Desiree dictated (口述) a letter to her Dad. "Daddy, happy birthday, I love you and miss you," she rattled off (快速说). "I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January."
Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree let the balloon fly. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till it disappeared. "Now Dad's going to write back to me," Desiree said confidently.
Every day after they'd flown the balloon, Desiree asked her mother, "Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet " Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.

四、答案:①removing ②problems ③a ④as ⑤has been added ⑥known ⑦harms ⑧It ⑨which ⑩actually
故填a。
the same...as为固定搭配, 意为"和......相同的......", 故填as。
⑤根据Since then可知, 本句用现在完成时, 动词add与其主语an underwater parachute构成被动关系, 应用被动语态, 故填has been added。
Dear Jack,
On hearing that you have been addicted to tiktok recently, I feel terribly sorry and can’t wait to write this email in reply to your problem.
Actually, it is commonly seen that a growing number of teenagers get crazy about tiktok, spending plenty of time watching and sharing videos online, which makes it hard for them to focus on study. However, action must be taken before things get worse. In my opinion, you’d better try and develop other hobbies. Besides, communicating with friends face to face will do the trick. Only in this way will you shift your attention and form good habits.
I do hope my suggestions will be helpful to you. Looking forward to your good news.
Best wishes!
