As a first responder, you never know what type of situation you might walk into, or who you'll meet along the way. It has definitely been the case for Jeffrey Lanenberg, a paramedic(急救医士) since 1984.
Ten years into the job, Lanenberg received a call that reported that a man in his early 30 s had fallen down in the Mall of America. When Lanenberg and his partner arrived at the scene, they found the young male faced down on the ground. He had gone unconscious, making weak attempts to breathe. His wife stood beside him, holding their small son in horror. They quickly rushed to defibrillate(除纤颤) and calm the man to keep him under control. After Lanenberg dropped the patient off at the neighboring hospital, he thought about the man and his family for a long time.
Lanenberg thought he had experienced everything under the sun until one random visit to Office Max three years ago, where he met a man repeatedly walking back and forth and staring at him. As it turned out, the man was the patient he had saved 20 years earlier.
"You gave me 20 years more than I ever thought I'd have," the man said. He thanked Lanenberg repeatedly and told him he had someone he wanted him to meet. He stepped around the corner and reappeared with a 20-something-year-old man. Lanenberg instantly knew that he was the son he had seen held by his mother all those years ago.
"That day changed my life," Lanenberg said. "Before that, everything was about work... When I talk to the beginners in training classes, I tell them that they never know the impact they can have on someone's life."

One of the most stressful days of Susan McFrederick's life was watching her son get wheeled away for surgery hours after he was born in 2011.
But after the operation, Susan burst into tears for a different reason: across the cut on their newborn son's back was a sweet winter scene, hand-drawn on his bandages(绷带).
"There were rolling hills of snow, a pine tree and a snowman with a hat and broom," she recalled. "It was extremely touching and comforting to know that somebody had taken the time to do that for my family. It was a moment I'll never forget."
Susan soon learned the artist was her son's surgeon, Robert Parry, who discovered another way to use his hands in the mid-1980s during his internship(实习期) at a children's medical center, where he saw one of his colleagues cut out heart and shark shapes to decorate children's bandages.
"My first reaction was, 'What is he doing Hey, that's kind of neat,' " Parry recalled. "I especially liked the reactions of the parents and the patients when they saw his artwork. The smiles took everyone's attention from the surgery. Then I decided to follow suit."
Parry quickly graduated from his early hearts and sharks, and started to surprise families with drawings that captured young patients' personalities. From Snoopy to Spider-Man and bears to butterflies, there isn't much he hasn't drawn. Most kids want superheroes, sports team logos or princesses, while babies often receive scenes with flowers, trees and sea creatures. During the last 30 years, Parry estimates he has left examples of his handiwork over the stitches(伤口缝线) of more than 10,000 children.
"During a time of stress for families, it's nice to be able to help them smile and laugh," Parry said. "This is something positive that I can do for them, which is what I like most about it."
For Parry, the reward is knowing he hopefully made a difference in a child's life, and except for his drawings on bandages, "They can go on and live their lives and never know I was in it," he said.
He's not ready to retire, but he's found a new hobby to keep his hands skillful in the years to come.
"I've taken up knitting(编织)," Parry said. "Hats, sweaters, gloves—I enjoy it all. But mostly, I enjoy giving everything away."

If you live in Washington, D.C., you may have glimpsed a small, boxy robot rolling along a local sidewalk, minding its own business, but attracting the attention of many a curious onlooker. The autonomous machines were part of a pilot program last year by Starship Technologies focusing on delivering meals from local restaurants in dozens of cities around the world.
"Today, more than ever, people lead a busy and diverse life," Lex Bayer, Starship's CEO, said in a statement online. "The hassle of needing to rearrange your life for a delivery will become a thing of the past. You don't have to switch your working from home day, reschedule meetings, visit a locker, drive to a post office or contact a deliveryman all because of a missed delivery."
The package delivery service is not available to everyone just yet. The company says it's rolling out the service in Milton Keynes, England. The wheeled robots have a top speed of 4 mph and can detect obstacles from as far as 30 feet away. "The robot can operate through just about anything," Nick Handrick, Head of US Operations at Starship Technologies, told The Washington Post's Maura Judkis last year. "If there is something in the way—a stick—it will be able to climb the edges of a road."
By giving customers control of when deliveries occur, Starship Technologies is offering its service as a way to battle package theft. In its announcement, the company cited statistics from a Wakefield Research poll for Comcast last year that found that 3 in 10 Americans who lived in houses or townhouses had had packages stolen.
To sign up for the service, which costs a little more than $10 per month, customers need to download the company's app. Customers then create a "Starship Delivery Address", a unique address inside a Starship facility, instead of a residence, where they can have packages sent from online stores. Once a package is delivered to the Starship Delivery Address, customers will receive a text that allows them to schedule a home delivery via a robot.

A.Failure. B.Expectation. C.Safety. D.Trouble.
2.What problem is the delivery robot facing
A.There is a limit to its service area. B.It takes longer to deliver packages.
C.It covers a short distance each time. D.It can't sense the barriers in front of it.
3.How does the package delivered by a robot avoid being stolen
A.The company shortens the delivery time.
B.The package is delivered to the house directly.
C.Its delivery time is in the control of customers.
D.The customers are informed of its delivery time in advance.
4.What can be inferred about the Starship Delivery Address in the last paragraph
A.It is a real home address of the customers.
B.It can arrange delivery robots for the customers.
C.It is a cheaper solution to the delivery of packages.
D.It sends the packages mainly to some shopping platforms.

The most important change in a person's life is the change of his or her attitude. Right attitudes produce right actions. Have you ever met someone who gave you a different view of life
On a Sunday morning, I saw something very interesting as I went to a greengrocer's. To get there, I had to cross a bridge over railway tracks. The bridge was pretty high. A steep set of steps had to be climbed; then the bridge flattened out(变平), followed by coming down another set of steps. On my way back from the greengrocer's, I saw an elderly gentleman running up the steps. After watching him run up the steps so fast, I thought that he must be in a rush.
Before I knew it, he had crossed the bridge, and then he ran back to where he started. To my surprise, he did not stop. He turned around, and then went up and down the bridge again. He was not struggling, and seemed to enjoy going up and down the bridge. Being a fitness fanatic(热衷于健美的人) myself, I admired his ability to cross the bridge so quickly. My curiosity got the better of me, and I came up to him to have a chat with him.
"Excuse me, sir. Are you training for an event " I asked.
He stopped and smiled. "No, not training for an event. Well, I am training for life," he said with a broad smile on his face as sweat rolled down his cheeks.
I told him that I had been looking for a role model of fitness, and that I hoped to be as strong as he is when I get to his age. He said that everyone has a choice about what they do with their life. "I am not different," he added. With much admiration, I asked, "What drives you to maintain good health "
Then he told me the accident he met when he was young.

四、答案:①longer ②to see ③dying ④is ⑤than ⑥that/which ⑦causes ⑧strengthen ⑨energetic ⑩ it/running
句中有than, 故用long的比较级longer。
短语reduce one's risk of..."降低某人......的风险", 此处介词of后用动词-ing形式作宾语。
④考查动词的时态和主谓一致。本文介绍了跑步的好处, 通篇以一般现在时为主。本句中宾语从句与主句的时态应保持一致, 故用一般现在时; 且宾语从句中的主语为it, 故用is。
⑤考查介词。根据句中的more可知, 此处应用介词than引出比较对象。此处表示跑步比散步、骑行或游泳更能有效地延长寿命。故填than。
give it a try为固定搭配, 意为"试一试", 根据语境可知, it指代running, 故可填it或running。
