In the workplace of the future your boss could be watching your every move.
Working at home is increasingly popular as a means of escaping from the hard work in from-nine-to-five office life. Why work under the constant surveillance (监督) of your boss when you can work comfortably in front of the TV in your home? Armed with all the office basics—the telephone, computer, e-mail and fax, many workers believe they can work as effectively as their colleagues in the office. Work wherever you like: From a busy city to a beautiful village. If you wish, you can even work on a boat.
So what will the office of tomorrow become? It is possible that many could disappear into cyberspace to become a new wave of virtual (虚拟的) offices. To minimize the office in intercity (城市间的) areas, companies will apply a work force made up of a network of home workers linked by an advanced communication and information system. A central processing computer would be controlled by the manager who sends out work schedules and oversees the activity of each employee.
A video screen would be created, as the need for more natural form of communication than e-mail or telephone becomes greater. Managers would have the ability to view several employees at once on their screens. Employees would be encouraged to feed any information that may be useful to fellow workers into the computer to make the company work more effectively. As the company’s lifeblood, the computer would contain a record of all conversations and correspondence for future reference and hold secret information such as accounts in password protected areas.

Life will probably be very different in 2050. First of all, it seems that TV channels will have vanished by 2050. Instead, people will choose a program from a “menu” and a computer will send the program directly to the television. By 2050, music, films, programs, newspapers and books will come to us in the similar way.
In many places, agriculture is developing quickly and people are growing fruit and vegetables for export. This uses a lot of water. Therefore, there could be serious shortages of water. Some scientists predict (预测) that water could be the cause of wars if we don’t act now.
In the future, cars will run on new, clean energy and they will go very fast. Cars will have computers to control the speed and there won’t be any accidents. Today, many cars have computers that tell drivers exactly where they are. By 2050, the computer will control the car and drive it to your destination. Also, by 2050, space planes will fly people from Los Angeles to Tokyo in just two hours.
Some big companies now prefer to use robots that do not ask for pay rises or go on strike, and work 24 hours a day. They are also easy to control. And they never argue with people. They can be easily used in a variety of places—factories, schools, offices, hospitals, shops and homes.
Scientists have discovered how to control genes (基因). Scientists have already produced clones (克隆) of animals. By 2050, scientists will be able to produce clones of people and decide how they look and how they behave. Scientists will be able to do these things, but should they?

My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software.
If you come to visit, you’ll probably be surprised when you come in. Someone will give you an electronic PIN to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The house uses this information to give you what you need. When its dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.
Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console (控制室), a small machine that turns things on and off around you.
I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that I’ve put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I’ve put in today.
I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself instead, “How will I live without them?”

What will the house of the future look like? Could it have gardens on its walls, or a pool with fish for dinner? Architects believe that they are all possibilities. The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible.
The tree house
Many architects in the world would like to build a “tree house”. Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity, and even create fresh air for the home. The “root” of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil to keep the homes temperature.
The Lizard (蜥蜴) house
Like a lizard, changing color with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it’s in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy.
Meals at home
This design is perhaps as much about the future of food production as architecture. It has gardens on the outside wall of the house. People can plant tomatoes, carrots and green tea on them. So every day in the morning, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.
Learning from the past
Looking to the future isnt the only way to be green. Sometimes, ancient techniques can also help cut down energy use. For example, a chimney (烟囱) can be a useful air conditioner because it is easier for hot air to flow out of the chimney.

A. takes in light. B. produce energy.
C. creates fresh air. D. turns dark.
4. What can be the best title of the text?
