Rachel Carson( 1907— 1964) was a pioneer of the worlds environmental movement through her writing of protecting the natural world. Her 1962 book Silent Spring made her well known by many people. It describes the harmful changes in the environment of using toxic (有害的)chemicals on farmland.
Carson’s career started as a biologist in the US Bureau of Fisheries. In 1951 she published her first book, The Sea Around Us, which became a bestseller. It made her rich enough to leave her job and devote her life to writing. She was a gifted writer. Her next two books were also about the oceans and both topped the book sales lists.
Carson’s book Silent Spring completely changed the way Americans thought about nature. This landmark work, which took Carson 4 years to complete, diligently detailed the relationship between animal death and the use—now understood as the abuse of man-made chemicals used as pesticides (杀虫剂),especially a deadly chemical called DDT. One of the claims of the book that she tried to tell the readers was that DDT had the effect of softening the eggshells of birds as well as affecting the birds’ birth, and that such effects would lead to their extinction (灭绝)if the use of DDT were to continue. It would eventually create a spring time of silence when the songs of birds would not be heard. Her studies also found DDT to be a cause of human cancers. It led to a nationwide ban (禁止) on the use of DDT, and other toxic pesticides that farmers used for their crops. Many people say the book led to the creation of America’s Environmental Protection Agency.
Since her death, Carson’s name has continued to be connected with protecting the environment. There is now a yearly Rachel Carson Book Prize. Norway awards the Rachel Carson Book Prize to women who have made great contributions to the field of environmental protection. In 1980, 16 years after her death, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in America.

We have found plastic in the ocean and in animals like birds, fish and whales. But for the first time, scientists have found plastic in human poop (粪便), USA Today reported.
The finding came from a study led by scientists from Environment Agency in Austria. The researchers followed eight healthy volunteers from different parts of the world. The volunteers wrote down what they ate for a week and then provided a poop sample for testing.
Scientists found nine different types of plastic in the samples, according to the study. An average of 20 small plastic particles (颗粒) were found in every 10 grams of poop. The particles measured between 50 to 500 micrometers.
“The smallest plastic particles are able to enter the bloodstream, the lymphatic system (淋巴系统) , and may even reach the liver ( 肝脏) ,” Philipp Schwabl, who took part in the research, said to the Guardian.
However, the scientists aren’t sure if this plastic is harmful to humans. They’re not sure how the plastic got in the volunteers’ bodies, either. But most of the volunteers said they drank from plastic bottles and also ate seafood that could include plastic from ocean pollution.
In fact, plastic is everywhere around us. Every year, an average of 8 million tons of plastic waste goes into the oceans, according to National Geographic. There, sunlight and waves break the plastic items down to the size of grains of rice. Most of the particles stay in the ocean. Others can spread into the human body
Previous studies may also give us a clue. According to USA Today, 90 percent of sea salt sold globally contains plastic. And even some tap water has been found to have tiny plastic particles in it.
