Step I. Review the content Task 1: Read the following statements and decide whether they are True or False. Find the evidence from the texts to support your idea. To refresh Ss’ memories of the specific information.
Step II. Focus on expressions Task 1: T asks Ss “Can you figure out what the underlined word refers to in the sentence according to the context ” Everyone is good at something and it’s important to find out what that is for each student. Ask Q: What does “that” refer to Find a word in the text that can best explain it. Task 2: Find the expressions in the text that tell you the information below. Graham didn’t have much belief in himself. Mr Jenkins felt proud that with his help, Graham became a successful adult. A teacher can play an important role in students’ development as a teacher can reach deep into students’ minds once they get interested. To guide student to develop a habit of reading for deeper comprehension based on the context as well as a sense of referring to the context for a clear idea of the meaning of a certain expression. To guide Ss to focus on some expressions that they will use later in retelling.
Step III. Retell the story Ss can choose one story to retell, either working as Group A or Group B. Group A: Prepare a presentation to tell Graham’s story. Group B: Prepare a presentation to tell Mr Jenkins’ story. Ss in Group A and B form pairs to retell the story according to the diagram. Ss give their presentation in class. To recall the content learnt in the previous lesson and try to use the language they learnt to tell the story.
Step IV. Get ready for a speech 1. T explains the situation: Graham is going to give a short speech for his high school radio station on the coming Teachers’ Day. Ss complete his speech using the words and expressions they have learned in the two texts. 2. Ss read Graham’s speech again. Think about the question. What aspects are included in the speech To give a different context for Ss to review the content and the expressions in the stories. To guide Ss to focus on the elements that compose the speech.
Step V. Write a speech Ss follow Graham’s example to write a speech to express thanks to one of their teachers for the school radio station. Try to use the expressions they have learnt in the texts. To consolidate the structure and the expressions they have learnt.
Step VI. Give a speech Ss give the short speech. To share and promote their gratefulness to their teachers.
Step VII. Summary T gives a brief summary: In this lesson, we have reviewed the content and expressions in the stories. practised retelling the two stories. tried to prepare and give a speech to a teacher we are specially thankful to. To refresh Ss’ memories of what they have learnt and build a sense of achievement.
Step VIII. Homework 1. Complete the exercises in the worksheet. 2. Polish your speech. To refresh Ss’ memories of what they have learnt and build a sense of achievement.
