British Summer Time (BST)
In some countries, they have summer time and winter time. In the UK, for example, their summer time starts on the last Sunday in March. At 1 a.m. on that day, the clocks in all public places in the UK are put forward an hour, from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. BST always ends on the last Sunday in October.
Culture corner
British Summer Time (BST),also known as Daylight Saving Time, is used in many countries besides the UK.
Benefits(益处)
A report shows that using Summer Time can save around 80 lives and 212 serious injuries (重伤)on roads in the UK every year. It makes Britain’s roads the safest in the world.
BST also saves the country’s energy. If people set the clocks forward by one hour, the time for people to turn on their lights will be shorter before they sleep.
It also brings the tourism (旅游业)a lot of benefits in the UK.
Extensive reading
It helps create 60,000 to 80,000 new jobs and makes 2.5-3.5 billion more each year.
There are other benefits, for example, it benefits people’s health. They have more time to do sports or exercise after work, and it can also make Seasonal Affective Disorder(季节性情感瘴碍)become less serious.
Disadvantages(劣势)
British Summer Time doesn’t have a significant(重大的) effect in low latitudes(低纬度地区). Because in these places it is usually wet and hot in the evenings, and it is also not easy for people to have a good sleep until morning.
Extensive reading
Extensive reading
Using British Summer Time means making people sleep worse.
People have to set the clock ahead or behind when British Summer Time begins or ends. It is quite disruptive (混乱的) and makes people confused(混淆的) because some of the hours exist twice in a day.
It disrupts people’s biological clock(生物钟), especially the biological clock of the elderly people. It harms their health because it is not easy for them to adjust (to the new clock setting.
Think: Should people use British Summer Time all year round Why
