Koningsdag—The Netherlands
Koningsdag or King's Day is a national holiday in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is celebrated on April 27 (April 26 if the 27th is a Sunday), the date marking the birth of King Willem-Alexander. Orange is the national color, and the streets become a sea of feather boas (羽毛围巾) and body paint as crowds gather in the plazas and on the boats in the rivers. Amsterdam is the center of this outdoor party, with many live music events, but nearly every town is alive with orange on this day.
Thai National Elephant Day—Thailand
Thai National Elephant Day is a national holiday in Thailand. Thai National Elephant Day has been celebrated on March 13th of every year since 1998. Washington is home to lots of trees and lots of wood-burning stoves too. But what if you lived there and couldn't cut wood or couldn't afford to pay anyone to do it Luckily, Shane McDaniel and his twin sons, Harrison and Henry McDaniel, 21, are happy to lend an ax(斧子). The three men cut truckloads of wood and then give the wood to those in need.
The idea was put forward by Shane as a father-son bonding project. He wanted to pass along the feeling his father Jackson and he shared while they cut wood, so he and the twins spent the summer doing their deeds. The result was a great wall of wood piled up around their house in Lake Stevens, about 35 miles outside of Seattle. To buy that much would cost about $10,000.
It was too much for the McDaniels to use themselves, and when the weather turned cold that November, Shane started thinking of others. He posted a request on a social networking site:“If you are in need of firewood and cannot afford it, please message me personally! Please help me and my boys make sure no one goes cold in our neighborhood.”
The response was immediate. One man offered to donate a wood-burning stove. Others raced to provide more wood for the pile. Single dad Peter Ticer, 29, and his four-year-old daughter depend on a wood-burning stove as their unique source of heat. So it was a relief to receive a truckload of firewood from the McDaniels before the holidays. “To get that much wood moved me to tears” he said. “So much stress and anxiety off my shoulders. I couldn't be more thankful.”
Giving is the reward. It has nothing to do with how well it's received; it's about how much it's needed.

Researchers at CU-Boulder have developed a wearable device that changes the human body into a biological battery. The device is stretchy(有弹性的) enough that you can wear it like a ring, band or any other thing that touches your skin. It also taps into a person's natural heat-employing thermoelectric generators to change the body's internal temperature into electricity. “In the future, we want to be able to power your wearable electronics without having to include a battery,” said Jianliang Xiao, an associate professor at CU-Boulder.
The concept may sound like something out of The Matrix film series, in which a race of robots have enslaved humans to harvest their precious organic energy. Xiao and his colleagues aren't that ambitious: Their devices can generate about 1 volt (伏特) of energy for every square centimeter of skin space—less volt per area than what most existing batteries provide but still enough to power electronics like watches or fitness trackers.
Scientists have previously experimented with similar wearable devices, but Xiao's is stretchy, can heal itself when damaged and is fully recyclable—making it a cleaner alternative to traditional electronics. “Whenever you use a battery, you're depleting(消耗) that battery and will, eventually, need to replace it,” Xiao said. “The nice thing about our device is that you can wear it, and it provides you with constant power.”
Just pretend that you're out for a jog. As you exercise, your body heats up, and that heat will radiate out to the cool air around you. Xiao's device captures that flow of energy rather than let it go to waste. “The thermoelectric generators are in close contact with the human body, and they can use the heat that would normally be sent into the environment,” Xiao said.
8.What does Xiao expect of his device at present
A.It will be used for medical purposes.
B.It will be made smaller and wearable.
C.It will change natural power into electricity.
D.It will supply constant power to wearable devices.
9.Why does the author mention The Matrix series in the text
A.To give an explanation.
B.To make a comparison.
C.To introduce a topic.
D.To analyze the cause.
10.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about
A.The strengths of Xiao's device.
B.The convenience of using a battery.
C.The replacement of wearable devices.
D.The development of traditional electronics.
11.What do we know about Xiao's device from the text
A.It operates with plenty of power.
B.It is designed for practical use.
C.It benefits people's health in a way.
D.It's based on traditional electronics.

Human activity is changing the surface and temperature of the planet. But new research shows it is also changing the sound of the Earth's oceans and seas.
Scientists say the changes in the sounds of our oceans and seas affect many marine(海生的) animals—from very small fish to huge whales. Sound travels “very far underwater,” Francis Juanes told the reporter. Juanes is an ecologist at the University of Victoria and co-writer of the recent research published in a magazine. “For fish,” he explained, “sound is probably a better way to sense their environment than light.”
Sounds help fish and other marine animals survive. They use sounds to communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters. Many ocean animals use sounds to find good places to give birth. However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise comes from shipping traffic, underwater oil and gas exploration, offshore construction, and other noisy human activities.
“For many marine species, their attempts to comm-unicate are being masked by sounds that humans have produced,” said Duarte. The marine ecologist at the Red Sea Research Center co-wrote the paper with Juanes. The Red Sea, Duarte said, is one of the world's most important shipping passages. It is full of large ships traveling to Asia, Europe, and Africa. Some fish and other animals, he said, now avoid the noisiest areas. Also, the overall number of marine animals has gone down by about half since 1970. In some parts of the ocean, scientists now record “fewer animals singing and calling than in the past—those voices are gone,” said Duarte.
Juanes and Duarte examined studies and research articles about changes in noise volume(音量) and frequency in the world's oceans. Then they put together a detailed picture of how the ocean soundscape is changing and how marine life is affected.
Climate change, the researchers found, also affects physical processes that shape ocean sounds. These include such things as wind, waves, and melting ice.
Some studies suggest that noise may cause hearing loss of marine animals. Besides, many marine animals are showing higher levels of stress due to noise, which might also affect the immune system.
Scientist Juanes says sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean threats. “In theory,” he said, “you can turn down or turn off the sound immediately. It's not like plastics or climate change, which are much harder to undo.”
12.What can we learn from the passage
A.Noise may result in hearing loss of human beings.
B.Sound pollution killed most of the marine animals in the Red Sea.
C.Noise can influence the communication of marine animals.
D.Sound is unlikely to be a better way to sense their environment than light.
13.What's the meaning of the underlined word “passages” in Paragraph 4
A.Channels. B.Addresses.
C.Industries. D.Companies.
14.In the following paragraph, the author will probably tell us .
A.what the main cause of climate change is
B.what should be done to reduce sound pollution
C.how to record changes in noise volume and frequency
D.how to enhance the immune system of marine animals
15.Which is the best title for the passage
A.The Future of Ocean Exploration
B.The Changes in the Sounds of Oceans
C.Sounds Help Marine Animals Survive
D.Humans Are Making Oceans Too Noisy

Slash(斜杠)Careers
What is your job Are you a teacher or a businessperson Or maybe you are a lawyer/writer or a teacher/photographer. 16 The term “slash career” comes from the punctuation mark(标点符号)—a slash that comes between job titles.
People with slash careers often have a primary job that provides most of their needs. The primary job usually comes before the slash. 17 This secondary job can help supplement the person's income.
Why would anyone want more than one job Some people look to their jobs for opportunities to develop their interests. But most people have too many interests for one job. Secondary jobs can be enjoyable if they include interests that the primary job doesn't touch. Some people who encourage slash careers say they actually help with work-life balance. 18
On the other hand, a slash career can be dangerous for work-life balance. 19 One might give up necessary things like relaxation, exercise or time with one's family. People with slash careers need to think carefully about how they use their time. This includes knowing when to stop working.
The clear advantage of slash careers is the extra income that secondary jobs provide. It's always helpful to have a little extra money to spend or to save.
20 With a slash career, losing one's job does not mean losing one's entire income. Or a secondary job may be so successful that it can turn into one's primary job.
If your interests stretch beyond your ordinary job, a slash career may work for you.
A.Slash careers provide extra money.
B.Slash careers also make one's life more stable.
C.Working more than one job can fill up all of your time.
D.If you have more than one job, you have a slash career.
E.It shows the person is creative and willing to work hard.
F.The job after the slash is often based on a person's interests.
G.That's because they can give people an opportunity to express themselves.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Arthur was messy. He didn't try to make messes, neither did he try to clean up much. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (食物碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back into the drawer.
One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy train. He was reading a comic book and he was still reading, saying nothing. The toy train had been on the living room floor since the morning.
“You know what, Arthur I'm not going to ask you again.” And with that, Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.
At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. After dinner, Arthur's feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks ” Arthur called.
“There weren't any socks in your hamper, so I didn't wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks on the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.
When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt!”
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Paragraph 1:
He turned to Mom for help, however, Mom was still reading and said nothing.

One possible version:
Dear Chris,
How are you recently I'd like to tell you something about our school's labor course.
In order to help us form a correct view of labor, colorful labor programs are open every week in our school. With the guidance of our teachers, we help plant vegetables and feed chickens in the school-run farm. Besides, we also participate in community service and voluntary work.
Most of us are fascinated by the course because it offers an alternative to our busy school life. Not only are we relaxed but we have gained a better understanding of labor.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
He turned to Mom for help, however, Mom was still reading and said nothing. Seeing his mother's response, he burst into anger. “Why are you so cold ” he shouted. But Mom just closed the book, staring at him, stating calmly, “All of your pain results from your bad habits.” Furious but weak in words, Arthur turned back sharply and stepped upstairs with a lame leg. Arthur came to realize it was he that could solve the problem. Tears of regret filling the eyes, he quietly picked up the toy train and put it in the box.
Paragraph 2:
Having put away the toy train, he caught sight of the dirty socks. It suddenly struck him that it was also his duty to do the washing himself. Having collected the socks, he sank them in water, and then gazed at them without knowing what to do. Just as he was scratching his head, Mom came over and told him how to wash them softly. His face lighting up, Arthur sprang up into his mom's warm chest. Stroking Arthur's hair, Mom smiled with satisfaction for his getting rid of the bad habit.
