Ruth Bader Ginsburg spent her life fighting for women to be treated equally. In doing so, she became an inspiring role model for women and girls around the world.
Her passion for women’s rights began when she was young. She started off her adult life having trouble finding a job. Even though she was smart, determined, and capable of doing the job, she was passed over mainly because she was a woman. She felt like she was being treated unfairly, or being looked down upon, only because she was a woman. She wanted to do something about it. But at the time there were no laws in the United States to protect her.
She decided to devote her career to being a lawyer and fighting for equal rights of women. Then, early in her legal career, when she was 29 years old, Ms. Ginsburg took a trip to Sweden to perform legal research. What she saw really focused her on fighting for women in the workplace. Seeing the progress women had made in Sweden convinced her even more that America was behind and wrong in its treatment of women.
Back in the USA, laws advocating for women’s rights were missing. She decided that she would help invent laws, write them, and defend them. Ginsburg would also become a professor to help other women to become lawyers so that they could do the same thing. And then, in 1993, after years’ practicing and teaching laws, she became only the 2nd female justice of the Supreme Court.
At only 5'1" tall and as a generally quiet person, Ms. Ginsburg’s power came from her focus, her determination, and her integrity (诚实正直). She went on to become an inspiring role model for girls and women around the world and one of the most respected justices in history. She changed the lives of many women and girls in the United States and beyond.
24. Why did Ruth fail to get a job
A. She was not an adult.
B. Women can not work by law.
C. She did something illegal.
D. She was treated unfairly.
25. What did Ruth do to fight for equal rights of women
A. She performed legal research in Sweden.
B. She escaped from her motherland.
C. She consulted lawyers of Sweden.
D. She fought with the USA government.
26. Which one can be used to describe Ruth
A. Patient. B. Selfless. C. Generous. D. Determined.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Sweden—A Birthplace of Famous Lawyers
B. Ruth—A Supreme Fighter of Women’s Rights
C. A Famous Justice—A Pioneer of Americans’ Rights
D. The USA—A Country Fighting with Discrimination
C
On December 26, 2004, an earthquake along the Indian Ocean caused a huge tsunami (海啸) that killed thousands of people in Asia and East Africa. However, wildlife officials at Sri Lanka’s Yala National Park reported no mass animal deaths. Yala National Park is home to hundreds of wild animals.
Some researchers believe the animals at the park were able to sense the earthquake and moved to higher ground before the earthquake hit. Animals have good senses that help protect themselves from being hunted by their natural enemies. It is thought that their senses might also help them sense the coming disasters. Several countries have done research on the prediction of earthquakes by animals. There are two theories about how animals may be able to sense earthquakes. One theory is that animals sense the earth’s shake. The other is that they can sense changes in the air. However, so far there has been no strong evidence about how animals may be able to sense earthquakes.
Other researchers are skeptical about using animals for earthquake predictions. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) officially states, “Changes in animal behaviors cannot be used to predict earthquakes. Even though there have been many cases of unusual animal behaviors before earthquakes, a connection between a specific behavior and an earthquake has not been made. Because of their fine senses, animals can often feel the earthquake at its earliest stages before the humans. That’s why people say that the animal knew the earthquake was coming. But animals can also change their behaviors for many other reasons.”
Although scientists disagree on whether animal behaviors can be used to predict earthquakes, they all agree that it is possible for animals to sense changes in the environment before humans. Researchers around the world are continuing to study the connection between animal behaviors and earthquakes. It is hoped that these studies will help to predict earthquakes.
28. What can we know about animals’ senses
A. They are not reliable.
B. They can change the environment.
C. They can protect animals in some ways.
D. They can prevent animals acting strangely.
29. What does the USGS mean according to the third paragraph
A. Animal behaviors can be used to predict earthquakes.
B. Animal behaviors are closely related to earthquakes.
C. Animals are sure to act strangely before an earthquake.
D. Animals might change their behaviors while being hunted.
30. The underline word “skeptical” in Paragraph 3 probably means ___________.
A. Scared. B. Content. C. Doubtful D. Frightened.
31. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to scientists’ study
A. Disappointed. B. Positive. C. Uninterested. D. Indifference.
D
In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics (策略).
One tactic involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food (垃圾食品) later in their trip. In department stores, the women’s shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics (化妆品) section: while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later.
Besides, businesses seek to appeal to (对...有吸引力) customers’ senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wines went up.
When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $ 10 million houses.
32. Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section
A. To save customers time.
B. To show they are high quality foods.
C. To help sell junk food.
D. To sell them at discount prices.
33. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy
A. Opening the store early in the morning.
B. Displaying British wines next to French ones.
C. Inviting customers to play music.
D. Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread.
34. What is the California builder’s story intended to prove
A. The house structure is a key factor customers consider.
B. The more costly the house is, the better it sells.
C. An ocean view is much to the customers’ taste.
D. A good first impression increases sales.
35. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To explain how businesses turn people into their customers.
B. To introduce how businesses have grown from the past.
C. To report researches on customer behavior.
D. To show dishonest business practices.
