Traveling to a foreign country can make you frightened if you don't know the local language. Mr. Thibault has a number of tips to help travelers manage in a destination when they don't speak the native tongue, based on his own experience. Here are a few of them.
Download a Language Translation App
Mr.Thibault tends to rely on Google Translate and suggests that travelers find an app that works for them.Ideally, find one that specializes in the language you need to translate especially if the language uses a character set you're not familiar with, or have difficulty pronouncing.
Speak with Your Hands and Head
Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head, Mr.Thibault said, are easy ways to communicate with locals in the country you're in.“Gestures are all universally understood,” he said.
Learn a Few Key Words
Knowing basic words and phrases like “hello”“thank you” and “I'm sorry,I don't speak your language. Do you speak English ” is a must, Mr. Thibault said. Showing that you care enough to learn some of the language before you go, and at least enough to acknowledge that you don't know more, is a form of respect and will make you go a long way to be liked by locals.
Work with a Local Travel Agent
If you feel particularly uncomfortable in the country you're heading to, and you have to go anyway, relying on a local travel agent who knows both your and your destination's languages can be incredibly useful.
Hire a Local Tour Guide
A tour guide can help you get a better grasp of the local language and is a good person to practice words and phrases with. Whenever Mr. Thibault visits a new country, he books a sightseeing tour with a guide on the first day of his trip. “I use this day to learn about my destination and get familiar with the language,”he said.
1.In what situation should a language translation app be applied while traveling abroad
A.When you have trouble pronouncing the words.
B.When you want to acknowledge your ignorance.
C.When you want to practice the local language.
D.When you feel uncomfortable in the country.
2.What is the easiest way to communicate with foreigners according to the text
A.Downloading a language translation app.
B.Learning a few key words.
C.Using body language.
D.Working with a guide.
3.How can you better understand the local language
A.By speaking with your hands and head.
B.By learning a few key words.
C.By downloading a language translation app.
D.By hiring a local tour guide.

In our daily lives, we probably make silly mistakes. While these moments can be worrying, they can also be handled with humor. When we are laughed at because of our mistakes, we can calm ourselves down with understanding and acceptance.
When one morning in a rush to school, I spilled(泼洒)my cup of orange juice. I immediately thought of the precious minutes I would have to spend in cleaning up the floor. I raced back and forth to the sink(洗碗槽)with a kitchen cloth soaked(浸透)with juice to wash off. My legs were shaking as I watched from my window the school bus coming to my street. Within a minute, I had thrown the orange juice-soaked cloth to the sink and ran outside to join the group of kids in entering the bus. When thinking about my morning rush to clean up the spilled juice on the bus, I realized how much unnecessary stress and worry I put myself through. I ended up smiling to myself about my minor nervousness over spilled juice.
These days I don't usually spill orange juice, but I do sometimes spill a bit of spaghetti sauce on my pants or put on my sweater backwards when I'm really tired and in a hurry for school. In each of my mistakes, I try to remind myself not to take myself so seriously. It takes me a minute to calm down, take a deep breath and smile at my carelessness. It is the ability to see mistakes in a different way that enables me to find humor in everyday moments.
Humor, however, doesn't always have to arise from silly mistakes. Kids may have a good laugh at comic books, classic jokes and stories told by friends and parents. What matters more is not where you find the humor in life, but that you can appreciate it.
4.When we make mistakes in our daily lives, we .
A.should treat them properly
B.may try to enjoy ourselves
C.must know the value of them
D.had better forget them in time
5.What did the author do before going to school in Paragraph 2
A.He prepared breakfast busily.
B.He had some clothes washed.
C.He made a cup of orange juice.
D.He did some cleaning at home.
6.What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A.The author always makes many mistakes on purpose.
B.The author tries to keep himself calm with humor.
C.The author has been used to being busy every day.
D.The author always makes other people around happy.
7.What does the author intend to tell us
A.We should try to find where humor lies.
B.We can be happy by enjoying humor.
C.It is natural for us to make mistakes.
D.Reading is a good habit for every person.

Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音调).
One of the study's authors,Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system”. This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs,Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.
Mandarin(普通话)speakers have been shown to have more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked for 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard the audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activity in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activity in response to the Chinese sounds.
The lead author of the study,Patrick C. M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.
8.When learning Chinese,a foreigner will find .
A.he has a difficult time learning music at the same time
B.he has an easier time learning music at the same time
C.it is hard to master the tones required to speak and understand
D.it is easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch
9.Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training
A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.
B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.
C.Because music training might help people with lang-uage study.
D.Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.
10.The underlined word “intoned” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word “ ”.

A.created B.spelled
C.seemed D.pronounced
11.What would be the best title for this passage
A.Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English Speakers
B.The Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study
C.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning
D.Schools Need to Develop Music Programs

Nobody laughed when the UK comedy show Little Britain toured the US. Americans didn't find the “British stereotypes(刻板印象)” funny. One character was a woman who was sick whenever she saw a foreigner. Another was a loud and rude 15-year-old girl cursing(咒骂)her teachers. But back home, British people were roaring, thinking, “Yes! That's exactly what we're like!”
A laugh is a laugh in any language, but the reasons for it can be very different. Britons and Americans speak the same language, but humor does not always translate. Take The Office as an example. This was originally a UK TV series but it was changed for the US. Both the US and UK series are set in a boring workplace in a boring town. But David Brent, the boss of the UK office, is not a nice guy like Michael Scott in the US version. “We had to make Michael Scott a slightly nicer guy,” wrote series creator Ricky Gervais. “He couldn’t be too mean(刻薄的).”
Gervais said British people are different from Americans because “Britons make fun of people we like or dislike...and of ourselves.” He believes the differences between the American and British senses of humor are because of “our upbringing”. “Americans are brought up to believe they can be the next president of the United States,” he wrote. “Britons are told, ‘It won’t happen for you..”
Things usually turn out fine at the end of every American The Office episode(集). Even if they're not perfect, the characters “learn a lesson” for the future. But in David Brent’s office—and in lots of UK comedies—the last scene is often sad. You are often left with the feeling that things just couldn’t get worse. For British people, this seems truer to life and so much funnier. It's not just Britain and the US that have comic differences. Few foreigners would understand a Chinese cross-talk show for example.
Cultural differences are no laughing matter. But comic differences can be a window into a culture.
12. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To show that British humor is not funny at all.
B.To show that American people don't understand British people.
C.To show that Britain and America have different ster-eotypes.
D.To show how humor may mean different things in different cultures.
13. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article
A.David Brent is quite a nice guy.
B.Michael Scott is a rather mean guy.
C.Episodes in the UK version often end with a hopeless note.
D.Episodes in the US version often end in a boring way.
14. What can we infer from the article
A.Britons do not like to make fun of others.
B.British comedy often has a moral message.
C.American people are brought up to be more positive.
D.Foreigners have little difficulty in understanding the Chinese cross-talk show.
15.What is the author's opinion of comic differences
A.They are slight differences that can be ignored.
B.They can partly show cultural differences.
C.They show stereotypes of different cultures.
D.They help people communicate with each other.

Much meaning can be conveyed clearly with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.
Do you have such kind of experience 16 , but not too long. And if he senses that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.
17 . If you are looked at for a while, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry at people staring at you that way. Eyes do speak, right
18 . But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex. If a man stares at a woman for more than 10 seconds, his intentions are obvious, that is, he wishes to attract her attention to make her understand that he is admiring her. In fact, continuous eye contact occurs between lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time to show affection that words cannot express.
However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener is attentive. 19 , as if he tries to control you, you will feel uncomfortable. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim, since he believes in the false idea that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. 20 .
Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the specific situation.
A.Quite the contrary
B.The same is true in daily life
C.On a bus you may look at a stranger
D.Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude
E.This shows the listener is interested in your speech
F.If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking
G.Sometimes it doesn't matter to others

A small bowl 36 (buy) for $35 at a home in Connecticut turned out to be a rare piece of ancient Chinese art.

A boulder(巨石),as big as a house. That's how the guidebook described Giant Rock. Dad said it arrived here millions of years ago. I was finally going to see it, in snowshoes, with my two older cousins, my dad, and my uncle Don. I'd been snowshoeing before, and I liked the adventure of hiking through deep snow.
At the parking area, after putting on our snowshoes, we studied the map. Due to the geographical location, electrical devices are inaccessible here. The map was our only guide. “We start here,” Dad said,“on the red trail(小路). Then we turn left onto the purple road. That's where Giant Rock is.” “Remember to stick together and don't wander off, guys,” Uncle Don said.
The trail ran uphill alongside a stone wall. It was easy to follow because red markers were nailed to the trees and the snow had been packed down by other hikers. At the top of the hill, we turned onto the purple trail. We settled into a pattern, with Dad and everyone else in front and me in the back, crunching(嘎吱嘎吱地踩)through the snow. I saw lots of animal tracks—mostly deer, squirrel, and rabbit prints. As the trail wound down, my cousin Andrew said what I'd been thinking:“Will we ever reach Giant Rock ” My cousin Aiden smiled and turned to me, “Luke, do you think your dad invented this idea just to get us away from the TV for a while ” I laughed. “You never know.”
Finally, we climbed a hill and saw the massive boulder sitting alone in the forest. It really is as big as a house! My cousins and I high-fived each other and jogged until we stood at the base, breathless. Standing in the boulder's broad shadow, I noticed the sun had sunk lower.
“Let's head back,”Dad said after a few minutes. “There will be several crossroads on the way back. Guys, keep up with the team.”I was a little behind the group when we approached a crossroads. And I noticed a set of animal tracks I didn't recognize, so I followed them for a closer look.
Paragraph 1:
I looked up when I suddenly realized how quiet it had gotten.
Paragraph 2:
As going worriedly, I heard voices, someone calling far away.
答案
第一节
A
Ideally, find one that specializes in the language you need to translate especially if the language uses a character set you're not familiar with, or have difficulty pronouncing. 句中one指代a language translation app。
Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head, Mr.Thibault said, are easy ways to communicate with locals in the country you're in.“Gestures are all universally understood,”he said. Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head,Gestures都属于body language。
A tour guide can help you get a better grasp of the local language and is a good person to practice words and phrases with.
I immediately thought of the precious minutes I would have to spend in cleaning up the floor. I raced back and forth to the sink(洗碗槽)with a kitchen cloth soaked(浸透)with juice to wash off.(我立刻想到了打扫地板要花的宝贵时间。
In each of my mistakes, I try to remind myself not to...enables me to find humor in everyday moments.(在我犯的每一个错误中,我都试着提醒自己不要把自己太当回事。
What matters more is not where you find the humor in life, but that you can appreciate it.(更重要的不是你在哪里发现生活中的幽默,而是你能欣赏它。)
Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand.

This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
But in David Brent's office—and in lots of UK comedies—the last scene is often sad. You are often left with the feeling that things just couldn't get worse. But David Brent, the boss of the UK office, is not a nice guy like Michael Scott in the US version. Things usually turn out fine at the end of every American The Office episode(集).
Americans are brought up to believe they can be the next president of the United States Britons make fun of people we like or dislike...and of ourselves. Few foreigners would understand a Chinese cross-talk show for example.
But comic differences can be a window into a culture.
And if he senses that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.
But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex.

One possible version:
Dear Tom,
I'm glad to learn that you are interested in the Mid-Autumn Festival. Now I'm writing to tell you something about it.
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when our family members usually get together and enjoy a reunion dinner. After that, I always admire the shining moon and share delicious mooncakes with my family. I love this festival because I like eating mooncakes, which are in the shape of a full moon symbolizing reunion and carry people's wishes to the family they love.
I hope that my letter will help you know more about this traditional Chinese festival. Looking forward to your coming to experience the festival in the coming September.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
I looked up when I suddenly realized how quiet it had gotten.“Where is everyone ” I shouted. But no one responded. “They couldn't have gone far. I'll catch up if I hurry.” I comforted myself. After a short walk, I came to the crossroads where I could turn left or go straight, but both trails had red markers. I turned to the left which looked familiar. Unfortunately, it got quieter and quieter. Soon it might be too dark to tell what color the markers were. What if I couldn't find my way back
Paragraph 2:
As going worriedly, I heard voices, someone calling far away. Following the voices, I noticed the stone wall, the trail running alongside it. It must be the right way back! I rushed downhill with big steps. Then, I saw the parking area, and my family! I shouted as I ran toward them. “Luke Are you OK ” The voice of Dad was urgent. I'd only been lost for minutes, but it seemed like forever. Now all I wanted was a bear hug from Dad and to make tracks for home.
