After I made it to the city center, I started to feel it might be easy for a foreigner to deal with the great size of Beijing. With growing confidence, I decided to take the subway to the hotel, not realizing that the network didn't go that far. Impressed with the cleanliness of the station, I bought a ticket and boarded the first subway that came along.
After a few minutes I asked in English a young man seated next to me where I should get off closest to the Friendship Hotel. Wearing a smart business suit and tie, he would surely speak English, wouldn't he Unfortunately, he couldn't understand me but seemed very friendly. I showed him the room card with all the information about the Friendship Hotel in Chinese characters(汉字). He looked at it, and then his eyes moved quickly to the carriage(客车厢)subway map Next, he raised three fingers of his right hand.
In Australia, raising fingers at someone is not usually nice, but this man was smiling. At the next station he showed me two fingers. Now in Australia, that's really rude, but I got the message. When we stopped at the third station, he didn't just point to the door, but got up, took me out of the subway, and led me to the top of the stairs, and out onto the street. Then he stopped a taxi and told the driver where to take me.
All this came from a man who couldn't speak my language, and I couldn't speak his. I was speechless, especially when he refused my offer of money. I felt a little embarrassed having even thought he would accept a tip.
This experience made it clear that I had to learn some Chinese quickly or my adventures might start turning into misadventures.

Physical education, or PE, isn't required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn't offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education The answer is certainly "yes".
Today many people don't do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
High school isn't that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to students' studies and lives. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.
The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity(肥胖症). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don't get teens to move around, such as computer games, means many teens don't get their required exercise. PE classes act as a public health measure(措施)to encourage physical activity and help teens have healthy weight.
Not doing sports increases teens' hazard of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be prevented by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President's Council on Fitness Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic(学业的)performance Students from programs with no physical I activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.

A typical school day in the UK starts around 8: 30 am. This is often even earlier elsewhere in the world, with students sitting down to their first lesson at 7: 30 am in the US. The average teenager ideally needs eight to nine hours' sleep each night, but in reality a lot of teenagers struggle to get this much. A lot of the problems happen because our sleep patterns are not fixed, and they change as we grow.
So a later school start time could help to solve this problem, by ensuring to get their eight plus hours' sleep and react properly to their body's natural rhythms(节律). There has been a general change over the past 25 years to shorten the school day. This is not at the cost of teaching time (which has remained constant) but at the cost of natural breaks, which has led to reduced lunch time and lesson breaks.
A later start time could help teens' grades and health. This is mainly because it makes the management of children easier. Managing hundreds of children "playing" requires effective staffing. And there is always the fear that behavior worsens during breaks. So the theory goes that having them in class and strictly managed must be better.
But this means that students barely have enough time to absorb what they were doing in maths before suddenly they are forced to study ancient history. And teaching staff also move through from one class to another, with hardly a rest or time to refocus.
Clearly rethinking the school day could benefit everyone included. Anyway, it could also lead to better achievements of teenagers and less of a struggle for parents in the morning. For teachers, it could also mean a less stressful day all around and what could be better than that
12. At what time do the students start their first lesson in the US
A. 7:00am.
B. 7:30am.
C. 8:00am.
D. 8:30am.
13. How do schools often shorten the school day
A. They reduce children's lunch time and lesson breaks.
B. They reduce the teaching time.
C. They properly adjust children's natural rhythms.
D. They increase more holidays.
14. What's the purpose of the short lesson breaks according to the text
A. To make children behave better in class.
B. To make children quickly take in what they learned.
C. To reduce children's excitement.
D. To manage children more easily.
15. What can we learn about the later school start time from the text
A. It will add to the teachers' pressure.
B. It has always been there for 25 years.
C. Parents may support it.
D. It benefits the students only.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
"Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?" Mum asked him. "We will have an English spelling test today, Mum, " Peter said. "Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I've been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them. "
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school.
At last, it was time for the students to have the test. "Responsibility, " Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
"The second word: contribution, " Mr. White said.
"So easy," Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. "I am to mark your papers now," he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, "Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!"
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter's was an English-Chinese dictionary-the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. "This is my happiest moment," Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word "contribution" confused him. It didn't seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. "C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N," he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.
"What am I to do " Peter said to himself. "I expect my classmates to think I'm a master in spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I'll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example of telling a lie. "
Staring at the full marks which were written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, "We ought to be an honest person. "
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Paragraph 1: Slowly, Peter raised his hand.________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Peter looked around and found many of his classmates were smiling at him._________________________________________________________________

3.D细节理解题。根据第一段中You can download(下载)them for free.可知,这些应用程序的共同之处是可以免费下载。
B
语篇解读:本文讲述了作者作为一个外国人在北京乘坐地铁到酒店时一路上的冒险经历。作者在不会汉语的情况下在北京外出,询问一个不懂英语的年轻人应该在哪个站下车,作者在年轻人的帮助下打的回到酒店,而这期间发生的这些事情使作者决定努力学好中文。
4.A细节理解题。根据第一段中With growing confidence, I decided to take the subway to the hotel, not realizing that the network didn't go that far.可知,作者是出于自信才决定乘坐地铁。B项“网络覆盖了大部分站点”和原文中the network didn't go that far不符;C项“他住在市中心附近”与D项“他对这个城市的整洁印象很好”均和本题无关。
5.B推理判断题。根据第二段中I showed him the room card…his right hand.可知,作者展示房卡后,年轻人快速看了一下车厢的地铁地图,并且举起了右手的三根手指头。因此年轻人理解了作者的意思。本题易误选C项“直接回答了作者”,根据年轻人做的动作his eyes moved quickly to the carriage(客车厢)subway map. Next, he raised three fingers of his right hand可知,年轻人并没有直接回答作者的问题。
6.B细节理解题。根据第三段中When we stopped at…where to take me.
This experience made it clear that I had to learn some Chinese quickly or my adventures might start turning into misadventures.可知,作者的写作目的是描述自己的一次冒险经历。A项“证明认真的重要性”、B项“介绍一位不懂英语的年轻人”和C项“抱怨一些文化误解”均不符合文意。
C
语篇解读:本文是一篇议论文,主要讨论了为什么高中生应该接受体育教育。
8.A细节理解题。根据第二段中Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
教导青少年健康的生活方式以及制订健身计划的重要性,可以帮助青少年在成年后,把锻炼放在首位。)可知,高中体育教育意味着让青少年重视以后的锻炼。A项中attach importance to exercise和原文中put exercise in the first place为同义短语。B项“消除青少年在学校面临的压力”、C项“让青少年鼓励成年人锻炼”及D项“帮助青少年制订好的计划”均与文意不符。
9.B词义猜测题。根据下句An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems.(积极的生活方式提供了一个很好的方法来预防这些健康问题。)可知,画线词所在句的意思是:不做运动会增加青少年患许多疾病的风险。因此“hazard”的意思是“风险,危险”。happiness幸福;risk风险;safety安全;sadness悲伤。
10.D推理判断题。根据最后一段中Students from programs…in support of physical education.(活动安排中没有体育活动的学生,把额外的时间用于课堂学习,在考试中的表现并不比那些为了支持体育而放弃一些学习时间的学生好。)可推断出,根据PCFSN所说,做运动帮助学生在学习上做得更好。A项“意味着让学生在运动和学习之间选择”、B项“帮助学生充分利用他们的所有时间”和C项“意味着学生更好地适应他们的学习”在文中均未提及。
11.A主旨大意题。本文第一段中But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly“yes”.(但是中学生应该接受体育教育吗?答案当然是肯定的。)是全文的主题句,结合全文内容可知,这篇文章主要讲了为什么高中生应该接受体育教育。故选A项。

13.A细节理解题。根据第二段中This is not at the cost of teaching time(which has remained constant)but at the cost of natural breaks, which has led to reduced lunch time and lesson breaks.可知,学校不是通过减少教学时间,而是通过减少孩子们的午饭时间和课间休息时间来缩短一天的在校时间。故B项错误,A项正确。C项与D项在文中未提及。
14.D推理判断题。根据第三段最后一句So the theory goes that having them in class and strictly managed must be better.可以判断出,缩短孩子们的课间休息时间,是为了更容易管理他们。由第四段第一句可知B项“为了让孩子们迅速记住他们所学到的东西”错误;A项“为了让学生们在课堂上表现得更好”与C项“为了减少孩子们的兴奋”在文中未提及。
15.C推理判断题。根据最后一段中Anyway, it could also lead to better achievements of teenagers and less of a struggle for parents in the morning.(而且,它还可以使青少年取得更好的成绩,减少父母在早上的挣扎。)

可知,本段主要说明的是除了在教室里学习之外,成功的高中生还会积极参与课外活动,后文中outside the walls of their classroom与A项中outside the classroom相对应。A项“积极参与课外活动”可以作为小标题。
20.D根据上文They are also active...experience.(他们也是他们社团的积极成员。关心那些对你的学生经历有影响的问题。)以及后文And then learn to use your voice so that people will listen to your ideas.(然后学会使用你的声音,因此人们就会听你的想法。)可知,上文提到成功的高中生也会积极参加社团活动,且结合前后文内容可知,设空处与前后文构成并列关系,都是在说明如何参与到社团活动中。故D项“在你所在社团面临的问题上训练你自己。”符合语境。

第三部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Dear Peter,
I'm glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well.
Here are a few suggestions. First, it is important to take a Chinese course. Then, it also helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible.
Besides, it could be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because by doing so you'll learn and remember Chinese words more easily. You can also make more Chinese friends. They will tell you a lot about China and help you learn Chinese.
Try to write me in Chinese next time.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Slowly, Peter raised his hand. "Mr. White, I didn't get full marks on the test. I spelt a wrong word." He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper. "I spelled 'contribution' with 's-i' instead of 't-i'." Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter's test paper. "Students," he said, "Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly on the test." Mr. White smiled at Peter. "He taught us all a lesson on being honest." As soon as Mr. White finished this sentence, stormy applause broke out in the classroom.
Paragraph 2:
Peter looked around and found many of his classmates were smiling at him. "Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us," Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr. White. Meanwhile, he couldn't wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.
