Manchester is a metropolis in Great Manchester, northwestern England. Situated on the east bank of the River Irwell, it is a lively city with a large population. Although it was once seen as only a dull industrial place, in recent years Manchester has become an “in” place. It is well known for its clubs, its fashion and its music, not to mention its world famous football team, Manchester United.
There is plenty to see in Manchester and something to suit all tastes. For example, if you have a taste for the Orient, you can visit Chinatown, where there are many Chinese shops and restaurants. Another place to visit is the historical Castlefield area, which contains the famous Castlefield Urban Heritage Park. Here you can walk around the museums and experience the atmosphere of the 19th century's Manchester.
Football fans need not feel left out; they can always make a trip to Old Trafford which also contains a coffee shop and a souvenir shop.
It's easy to find your way around the city center and you're never too far away from a bus, which will take you wherever you want to go. However, many people prefer walking in the city where there's so much to see, and much of it is off the main travel lines.
If you get tired of all that walking, you can refresh yourself at one of the many café bars in the city. There's a wide variety of homely and old fashioned ones.
Whatever you do, you won't have a dull moment in the place which was awarded the title of “the UK's most interesting city”. Despite its unpopular industrial image in the past, Manchester is becoming more and more popular as a tourist destination nowadays.

A Californian family drives a car that could help protect the environment. When Jon and Sandy go to the store or to their daughter's soccer games, they drive in the high tech style. They drive a $1 million, fuel cell powered car. It may be the world's most expensive car and one of the most environmentally friendly cars. The FCX is the first fuel cell powered car to be used by a family anywhere in the world. The FCX uses hydrogen and oxygen for fuel. Car makers have been working to develop vehicles that are better for the environment. They are developing cars that use fuel other than gasoline.
And then what is fuel cell technology Fuel cell technology works by changing the chemicals hydrogen and oxygen into water. This process produces electricity, and water vapor which comes out of the exhaust pipe. Most cars release dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Many scientists say these gases are major contributors to global warming. “The FCX is driven just like any other vehicle on the road, but without the gases which pollute the environment,” scientists say. Fuel cell technology has been around since the 1800s, but scientists have yet been to perfect it. They say it may take years before the technology is ready for widespread use. Another earth friendly car is already on the market. Hybrid cars use both gasoline and an electric motor. They are becoming more popular with customers because they cut pollution and improve fuel efficiency.

Amazon Echo, Google Home, Apple's Home Pod and Microsoft's Cortana are a few examples of voice controlled equipment. All include smart speakers that “talk” to users inside the house and can perform operations.
Experts with the Consumer Technology Association say sales of smart speakers were once expected to nearly double in 2019.
The Internet linked products can play music or find information when asked questions. They can also control cquipment such as lighting, cameras, televisions and temperature controllers. Among new “smart” home products to be released at the CES are voice controlled washing machines, refrigerators, showers and toilets. There is also much new physical fitness and health related equipment on show. Some are designed to help people create the best personal fitness plans to reach their goals. Wearable health equipment is used to study and measure body conditions, while others help recognize signs of disease.

The quilt (被子) took a lot of time. But the messages on it were meaningful.
When I started my current project, I woke up every day with new ideas and fresh enthusiasm. I really believed in the importance of what I wanted to create, and I had my husband, Claudio, to cheer me on. But then, things had gotten hard. I injured my shoulder and my recovery was slow. In the middle of it, I lost Claudio to cancer. I was discouraged, lonely, and without Claudio's comfort. Facing down the half finished quilt in my sewing room one morning soon after his death, I could hardly gather the energy to sew it.
The quilt was meant to be a way to keep my old nursing class together. We'd graduated from Mercy College over 40 years before and quickly worked all over the country. After our last anniversary party, I tried to find ways for everyone to stay in touch, but nothing ever seemed to work out. I knew I needed to find a connection to share at a distance. I thought about a quilt.
I got in touch with as many of my old classmates as I could. Everyone who wanted to join the project was sent a piece of fabric (布料). They could sign it or write a personal message. Once I got the pieces back, I'd sew them into the finished piece.
I rubbed my painful shoulder and ran my hand over the unfinished quilt. Even after several operations, movement in my left arm was limited. There was still so much to do. Our class's forty fifth anniversary party was coming up but my heart wasn't in this project anymore. With Claudio's encouragement I'd kept at it despite my painful shoulder. But Claudio was gone now. Working on the quilt was impossible with my aches and pains. Why was I even trying I covered up my sewing machine and left the quilt as it was.

参考范文:
Weeks passed but I didn't sew a thing.I saw it one afternoon when I went into my sewing room.Quilting pieces covered the table. They were filled with colorful messages from my old classmates at Mercy College.I picked one up:“Mercy sisters—friends forever!”The handwriting was messy, but the statement was true.I could almost imagine my old friends right beside me,whispering words of hope and love.Maybe I'm not as alone as I thought.Suddenly my project no longer seemed so frightening. No time to waste.I uncovered my sewing machine and got to work.
I arrived at our forty fifth anniversary party.I was equipped with pictures of the finished quilt. The ladies cheered as the photos went from hand to hand, one dear friend to another.I couldn't wait for them to hold the real thing, for them to be wrapped in the comfort of old friends, just like I had been when I needed it most.
