The English have a difficult and, generally speaking, dysfunctional(不协调的)relationship with clothes. Their main problem is that they have a desperate need for rules, and are unable to get along without them. This helps to explain why they have an international reputation for dressing in general very badly, but with specific areas of excellence, such as high-class men's suits, ceremonial costume, and innovative(革新的)street fashion. In other words, the English dress best when they are "in uniform".
You may be surprised that I am including "innovative street fashion" in the category of the uniform. Surely the parrot-haired punks(朋克摇滚乐迷)or the Victorian vampire Goths are being original, not following rules It's true that they all look different and eccentric(奇特的)but in fact they all look eccentric exactly in the same way. They are wearing a uniform. The only truly eccentric dresser in this country is the Queen, who pays no attention to fashion and continues to wear what she likes, a kind of 1950s fashion, with no regard for anyone else's opinion. However, it is true that the styles invented by young English people are much more eccentric than any other nation's street fashion. We may not be individually eccentric, apart from the Queen, but we have a sort of collective eccentricity, and we appreciate originality in dress even if we do not individually have it.
Another "rule" of behavior I had discovered was that it is very important for the English not to take themselves too seriously, to be able to laugh at themselves. However, it is well known that most teenagers tend to take themselves a bit too seriously.
The Goths, in their scary black costumes, certainly look as if they are taking themselves seriously. But when I got into conversation with them, I discovered that they too had a sense of humor. I was once chatting to a Goth in the full vampire costume—with a white face, deep purple lipstick, and black parrot-hair. I saw he was also wearing a T-shirt with "Goth". "Why are you wearing that " I asked. "It's in case you don't realize I'm a Goth," he answered, pretending to be serious. We both burst out laughing.
24.What can we know about the English people
A.They need rules to dress well. B.They are in need of uniforms.
C.They are creative in general. D.They lead the world trend.
25.Who is individually eccentric in dressing
A.A high-class man. B.A parrot-haired punk.

D.They are less fashionable than the other English people.
27.What may be the best title for the text

A culture's values can be mirrored by its humor. Humor has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who disliked humor, "Laughter is nothing else but sudden glory arising from some sudden thought of feeling far better than others." He thought humor to be a negative quality of human narrow-mindedness.
However, Mordechai Gordon, Ph. D of Education, insists, "Humor allows us to view the world from an angle that is amusing rather than serious." I agree with Gordon. Learning to look at the world through humor is important.
In the United States, every four years an election occurs. Without humor as a way to express their feelings, how else would Americans keep from clawing their eyes out and going the way of lemming Television shows like The Daily Show have become important parts of American culture. They are mothering the masses by metaphorically (隐喻地) airplane-ing politics into our mouths. They make politics fun.
Of course, politics is only one type of humor. Social humor helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition. American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self-image. On the topic of self-image, Hari Kondabolu stands out. He has a joke about the popular musical group "The Pussycat Dolls", describing their hit song "Don't Cha" as a negative representation of women. He points out an obvious offence in American culture.
A study from Loyola University of Maryland has shown that humor is one determining factor for selecting a mating partner. Amongst other things, mates look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential partner.
Of course, humor is not always used for good purposes. Humor can be linked to vulgarity (庸俗) and racism, but, like everything else, it has potential to unite human beings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connection with one another.
Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles (皱纹) to know that there is a comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn't aware of.
With that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity and sometimes at humanity.
28.Hobbes believed that humor ______.
A.was only a way to laugh at others to make oneself feel better
B.resulted in narrow-mindedness of human beings
C.had the power to mirror personal glory and national values
D.was for people to view the world from another angle
29.What is the author's attitude towards political humor
A.Worried. B.Disappointed. C.Curious. D.Appreciative.
30.The fourth paragraph is developed mainly ______.
A.by example B.by process C.by comparison D.by classification
31.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A.Chaplin wasn't aware of being laughed at.
B.The author feels helpless and sad about getting older.
C.Never be the one who laughs at other people.
D.The author is determined to face life with a sense of humor.
D
Play time is in short supply for young children these days and lifelong consequences for developing children can be more serious than many people realize.
An article in the most recent issue of the American Journal of Play details not only how much children's playtime has declined, but how this lack of play affects emotional development, leading to the rise of anxiety, depression, and problem of attention and self-control.
"Since about 1955, children's free play has been continually declining, at least partly because adults have applied ever-increasing control over children's activities," says the author Peter Gray, phD, Professor of Psychology at Boston College.
We can describe this freely-chosen play as a testing ground for life. It provides important life experiences without which young children cannot develop into confident adults. So kids need more of it, not less, because play is how young children learn important social and emotional skills such as sharing, cooperating, and communicating. It helps them develop fit bodies, strong minds, and brave hearts, so they can take on new challenges and risky situations.
Gray's article is meant to serve as a wake-up call. We must know that lack of childhood free play are a big part of the problem. It is hard to find groups of children outdoors at all, and, if you do find them, they are likely to be wearing school uniforms and following the directions of coaches while their parents dutifully watch and cheer.
Actually, when children are in charge of their own play, it provides a foundation(基础)for their future mental health as older children and adults. Play gives children a chance to find and develop a connection to their own self-guided interest. It is through play that children first learn to make decisions, solve problems, improve self-control, and follow rules. Play helps children make friends and learn to get along with each other as equals. Most importantly, play is a source of happiness.
When parents realize the major role that free play can take in the development of emotionally healthy children and adults, they may wish to rethink the priorities ruling their children's lives. The needs for childcare, academic and athletic success and children's safety are important. But perhaps parents can begin to realize small changes—such as openings in the schedule, backing off from quite so many controlled activities, and possibly slightly less keeping watch on the playground that would start the slow returning to the direction of free, imaginative, kid-directed play.
32.What do we know from the first two paragraphs
A.The rise of children's anxiety is more serious than people realize.
B.Lack of play time leads to kids unhealthy emotional development.
C.More young children are suffering from depression due to free play.
D.Playing too much leads to problems of kids' attention and self-control.
33.According to the passage, freely-chosen play ________.
A.is full of challenges and risky situations
B.does harm to children's confidence and ability
C.should be balanced with adult-directed activities.
D.has a good effect on children's social and emotional skills
34.The underlined words "this lack" in Paragraph 2 mean ________.
A.improving B.appearing C.breaking D.falling
35.Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A.Do Children Need More Self-guided Play
B.Are Children Interested In Guided Play
C.Can Children Guide Themselves
D.Are Children's Problem Serious
