Wendy Wang, 18, a recent graduate of Central High School in Philadelphia, US, thumbed through(浏览) the pages of Ralph Ellison’s 1952 novel “Invisible Man” before stopping at a particular page.
She read it out loud to about a dozen high school students during an online meeting, which was part of a weeklong virtual art workshop (虚拟艺术研讨会) for high school students organized by the Kids of Survival (KOS). “When’s the last time you were read to ” asked Angel Abreu, a member of KOS and an instructor for the program. “There’s a power in listening to everyone’s voice and seeing everyone connect to the text.”
In this activity, one young artist read a meaningful text while others were encouraged to draw or paint on paper. After reading and listening to stories from “Invisible Man”, students made their own designs about the book.
Maryem Bouatlaoui, 16, a junior at Central High School, said she created about five images. But she was most proud of her design that looked like steel bars (铁栏杆). “The meaning behind it was to show that being a minority (少数族裔) is like being behind bars in real life,” Bouatlaoui said. “Especially in America, things don’t feel like they’re equal for everybody ...I think we should be able to get out of those bars and ask for racial equality (种族平等).”
Ross Samir, 17, a senior at Franklin High School, was inspired by the colors of the South African flag for his design. “The workshop was eye-opening,” said Ross. He learned that art could be found in many places, not only in the museum of art.
The students said they learned not only about lessons from history and important texts, but also about themselves. For Wang, it helped her to reach a deeper understanding of the power of her own voice. “You can use your voice to create art and change the status quo (现状).”
Works of art that were created through the workshop are now on display in more than 120 museums and public collections.
24. What does the passage tell us about the workshop

Improving memory is important to success in studying. But is there anything that we can do about it One solution might be walking backwards.
According to a new study published in the Journal of Cognition, walking backwards, whether doing it really or just imagining it, can improve the brainpower in the short term. In the study, 114 volunteers were asked to watch a video in which a woman had her bag stolen. Then they answered 20 questions about the information shown in the video. Ten minutes after watching the video, the volunteers were divided into three groups. The first two groups were told to move forwards or backwards 10 meters while the third group was asked to stay still on the same point. The researchers found that the backwards-walking group got two more correct answers on average than the other two groups. This suggests that a relationship between the concepts of time and space is important to the way our minds form memories.
When we walk backwards, everything we learn becomes strange to us. “This forces the brain to think in a different way,” US scientist Christine Weber told Forbes. It almost always means that our brain needs to be more active in the limited time. Naturally, our short-term memory will be improved greatly.
Besides improving our memory, walking backwards also plays an important role in physical health, especially fitness. Another study found that walking backwards puts less strain(压力) and requires a smaller range of movements from the knee joints (膝关节). Thus, there’s less pressure and pain in the knees.
In addition, walking backwards, compared to walking forwards, is more challenging. It requires you to use muscles(肌肉) and movements that you probably seldom use, making it a perfect way to change your exercise routine(惯例) for greater fitness gains. Meanwhile, by making people put in extra effort, it naturally burns more fat and calories.
28. Which group of people performed best in the memory test
A. The staying-still group.
B. The forwards-walking group.
C. The imaginary-walking group.
D. The backwards-walking group.
29. What do we know about backwards walking
A. It follows our exercise routine.
B. It limits our thinking time.
C. It directs our focus to important information.
D. It can increase the activities of our brain.
30. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing Paragraph 3
A. To add another point of the topic.
B. To explain the result of the research.
C. To present the main idea of the passage.
D. To provide some background information.
31. In what way does walking backwards improve people’s health
A. It can keep people in good shape.
B. It can reduce people’s stress.
C. It can make people’s joints stronger.
D. It can make people more energetic.

When I was a child of seven years old, on a holiday, my grandparents filled my pocket with coins. I went at once to a shop where it sold toys for children. Interested in the sound of a whistle(哨) that I had seen on the way, in the hands of another boy, I handed over all my money for one. I then came home, and went whistling all over the house, much pleased with my whistle, but troubling all the family. My brothers and sisters, when I told of the bargain(交易) I had made, said I had given four times as much as the whistle was worth. They put me in mind of what good things I might have bought with the rest of the money, and laughed at me so much for my stupidity that I cried with anger. Thinking about the matter gave me more disappointment than pleasure the whistle gave me.
This, however, was afterwards of use to me, for the impression continued on my mind, so that often, when I was tempted to buy something I did not need, I said to myself, “Don’t give too much for the whistle,” and I saved my money.
As I grew up, came into the world, and studied the actions of people, I thought I met with many, very many, who “gave too much for the whistle.” When I saw some men was in a hurry to get social recognition, wasting his time at meaningless social parties, giving up his rest, his freedom, his friends and perhaps his family, I said to myself — “This man gives too much for the whistle.”
If I knew a miser(守财奴) who gave up every kind of comfortable living, all the pleasure of doing good to others, all the respect for his community members and the joys of friendship, just in order to collect and keep wealth — “Poor man,” said I, “you pay too much for your whistle.” When I met a man of pleasure, who did not try to improve his mind or his fortune but only focused on having a good time, perhaps paying less attention to his health, “Poor man, you are providing pain for yourself, instead of pleasure; you are paying too much for your whistle.” In short, the failure of mankind largely results from their putting a false value on things — giving “too much for their whistle.”
32. Why did the author’s brothers and sisters laugh at him
A. Because the whistle was of poor quality.
B. Because he was cheated out of money by his parents.
C. Because the sound of the whistle was annoying.
D. Because the whistle wasn’t good value for money.
33. What does the underlined word “tempted” in the second paragraph mean
A. Forbidden. B. Attracted.
C. Invited. D. Advised.
34. This experience was of use to the author in that ____.
A. he became self-controlled
B. it impressed him deeply
C. he saved a lot of money
D. he turned into an activist
35. What can we learn from the passage about the author
A. He spent money wisely when he was young.
B. He was annoyed by the boy who sold the whistle to him.
C. He is not the only man to buy an expensive whistle in life.
D. What he bought didn’t trouble his family seriously.

Homelessness is a tragic reality of the world we live in. While many believe that the people who live on the streets are there because they fail to put in enough effort, the truth is much more complex(复杂的). And it is important to realize that.
When Dominique Harrison-Bentzen, at age 22, found herself stranded(滞留) in the streets, she was saved by a homeless man. In an unbelievable act of kindness, the homeless man offered her his last remaining £3 so she could pay for a taxi to get home safely. “We met when I was trying to get home but I realized I had no money. I had lost my bank card after a night out. I suddenly realized that I had no money and I cried sadly. Then a dirty homeless man walked to me, which made me more scared. I didn’t know who he was and what he was going to do,” Dominique recalled. When she was about to run away, he stopped her and asked her if she needed help. “His smile was so kind that I believed him. After learning the truth, he comforted me and helped me with his only change of £3. He told me to take it to pay for a taxi to make sure I got home safely,” Dominique added.
“He doesn’t look like a bad guy. Why is he homeless ” Dominique thought. After a short conversation, Dominique found out that the kind man named Robbie had become homeless and jobless just 7 months before she met him. He got laid off from his job because of his illness. Since then, he had been doing part-time jobs. He worked hard. However, things were not getting better. The conditions of homelessness made it even more difficult to find stable(稳定的) jobs and get out of the streets. Despite it all, Robbie never lost his kindness. Many said that he came to their help in Preston city centre, returning lost wallets to walkers and offering his own scarf to keep others warm. Dominique was moved. Dominique didn’t take his money but his kindness left a lasting mark on her.

But he was homeless and where could Dominique find him Even though finding him was not easy, Dominique never gave up. Luckily, Robbie’s kindness had left a mark on many others, which helped Dominique in finding him again after that meaningful meeting. She posted a video on her Tik Tok app explaining her situation to try to find him. People told her that the man was seen near Preston. “It took me four nights of driving round Preston to find him, and I succeeded,” she said.
Para. 2: Dominique wanted to change his life completely by raising money for him. She hoped that she could collect enough to get Robbie a room so that he can be safe and warm. At first, the goal was to raise £500 for Robbie — but the result was surprising. People got to know what had happened to Dominique and learned what a kind person Robbie was. 33. B。 由此可知,be tempted to与be attracted to同义,含义为“被吸引”。
34. A。推理判断题。根据第二段“This, however, was afterwards of use to me, for the impression continued on my mind, ... and I saved my money.”
