Maya Ackerman just wanted to write a song. She tried for years — song after song. In the end, she didn’t like any of the tunes(曲调) she wrote. she says, “All the melodies (旋律) that came into my mind were so boring that I couldn’t imagine wasting time performing them.”
Maybe, she thought, a computer could puter programs are already useful for recording songs that people come up with. Ackerman now wondered if a computer could be more — a songwriting helper. It was a flash of inspiration. “I knew immediately that it would be possible for a machine to give me ideas,” she says. That inspiration led to the creation of ALYSIA, a songwriting program that uses algorithms (算法). When first-time songwriters type in lyrics, this computer program can produce new melodies, based on the lyrics.
As a computer scientist at Santa Clara University in California, Ackerman has a lot of experience using algorithms. These are step-by-step math ways to solve problems and make predictions(预测). Algorithms are useful in programming computers. They can also be useful for everyday tasks.
When a computer runs software, it’s completing tasks by following algorithms written as computer puter scientists like Ackerman analyze(分析), study and write algorithms to solve a series of problems. Some of them use algorithms in the field of a new technology, AI, which teaches computers to carry out tasks or activities that the human brain usually deals with.
Ackerman isn’t the only one using AI for songwriting. Some programs produce music for many instruments. AI is also finding its way into other arts. Painters, dancers and photographers have found new ways to make use of AI algorithms. Ahmed Elgammal runs a computer-science lab that focuses on using AI to influence art. “AI is a creative tool that will be accepted as an art form,” he says. “It will influence the way art is made, and what art will be.”
24. What did Maya Ackerman think of the song she wrote
A. Surprising. B. Satisfactory.
C. Disappointing. D. Wonderful.
25. How can ALYSIA turn out good melodies
A. By copying other songs.
B. By attracting helpers online.
C. By giving songwriters inspiration.
D. By using algorithms according to the lyrics.
26. What’s the use of AI according to the text
A. Making people write better algorithms.
B. Doing things that people often do.
C. Letting computers follow algorithms.
D. Inventing all kinds of creative tools.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph

How lonely are you Sometimes living alone or being in a faraway area with nobody around to talk to can make you feel lonely. It’s not a great feeling, but research has found that loneliness is something that can influence us all, whatever our age is.
There’s a familiar phrase that says it’s possible to be lonely in a crowd—although hundreds of people are beside you, you think you have nobody to talk to or to connect with. It’s probably not true, but loneliness is seen as a big problem for the mental health of the population wherever they live—so much so that the British government even has a minister(部长) for loneliness.
The BBC recently completed a survey about the topic and it found that people aged between 16 and 24 experienced loneliness more often and more strongly than any other age group. Researchers from the University of Manchester, who studied the data, suggested that feeling lonely may plague the young because it’s a time of figuring out your place in the world and of learning to deal with feelings. More and more young people are suffering from mental problems. One of the leading problems is that they do not communicate properly with others.
The problem is now being talked about more. And in the UK, the minister for Loneliness Tracey Crouch said that “the government now considers loneliness as one of the biggest health challenges we face.” She also said there needs to be a “national conversation” to end the dishonour about admitting to feeling lonely.
The BBC Loneliness Experiment also found that the type of culture you live in has connections with loneliness. People from cultures such as Northern Europe and the US, revealed they would be less likely to tell a workmate about their loneliness. But in cultures such as in Asia and Africa, older women in particular were at a lower risk of feeling lonely.
28. Why does the author mention the British minister for loneliness
A. To show loneliness is useless.
B. To show loneliness is predictable.
C. To show loneliness is hard to treat.
D. To show loneliness is harmful and common.
29. What can we know about loneliness according to the survey by the BBC
A. The older one is, the less probably he feels lonely.
B. Teenagers are more likely to be lonely than any other age group.
C. Loneliness is connected with one’s age and the environment he’s in.
D. Lonely people are more likely to be mentally ill than social ones.
30. What does the underlined word “plague” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Inspire. B. Trouble. C. Support. D. Challenge.
31. How should people deal with loneliness in Tracey Crouch’s opinion
A. By accepting the fact that they feel lonely.
B. By spending less time in staying by themself.
C. By realizing the trouble in dealing with loneliness.
D. By being with positive people as much as possible.

There are more than 10 million people in the world who are unable to speak and they depend on computerized equipment to provide their voices. But because there are so few recorded voices for them, the same voice used by the physicist and writer Stephen Hawking is used by little children.
When speech scientist Rupal Patel was at a meeting and saw a young girl talking to a grown man and both were using the same computer voice, she knew something had to be done. So Patel worked to create custom (定制的) voices for custom people. To start the process, a voice donor (捐赠者) records a series of short stories and sentences. They don’t record every single word a person might say, but they typically cover all the different combinations of sounds that happen in language.
The process might take between five and seven hours, but it doesn’t have to be done all at once and it can be done in the donor’s home. The voice donor can start, stop and pick up whenever it’s convenient. They’re encouraged to record from the same place each time so the sound is continuous. Those recordings are then divided into little pieces of speech to be kept in a database (数据库). The person who will receive the voice also records a few special sounds. Patel’s team then searches the voice database for a perfect voice match. Finally, that donated voice is joined with the receiver’s sounds, which makes a custom voice.
So far, more than 14,000 speakers from 120 countries have contributed to what the company, VocaliD, calls “The Human Voicebank”. People who want to donate can record from anywhere they have a computer or phone, sharing their voice with anyone who needs it or even banking it for themselves. “English speakers from English-speaking countries share their voice as part of our Human Voicebank because they want to help bring speech to the speechless,” VocaliD spokesperson Elisabeth Nuboer said. “We have voice donors all over the world, ranging in age from 6 to 91 and welcome everyone and all your wonderful voice.”
32. How do the speechless people speak, according to the passage
A. They write their words on paper.
B. They use computerized equipment.
C. They depend on body language.
D. They type their words on phones.
33. What caused the problem that Rupal Patel discovered at a meeting
A. There were so few recorded voices.
B. No recorded voices were for children.
C. Recorded voices didn’t sound perfect.
D. Recorded voices were not easy to understand.
34. Why do the speechless ones who want to get the donated voice also need to record a few special sounds
A. Because they also need to make a contribution to the database.
B. Because their special sounds will be needed for the study in the future.
C. Because their throats need to be examined before using special equipment.
D. Because Patel’s team needs their special sounds to get a perfect voice match.
35. Which of the following can we infer from the last paragraph
A. English-speaking voice donors are more important than others.
B. English is the main language in VocaliD’s Human Voicebank.
C. Many people around the world are willing to help the speechless.
D. The donor whose age is below six will be refused by the company.

In 1955, Ella Fitzgerald had a professional music career(生涯;事业) that lasted nearly twenty years. She was a talented Jazz musician, and yet she was hardly known to the general public because she was an African American doing amazing things at a time when racism(种族歧视) in the United States was still widespread.
So despite(尽管) her undoubted talent, it was very challenging for Ella to book shows at a concert hall that attracted mainly white audiences(观众). She didn’t let this stop her though, with all the difficulties against her, she set her sights on performing at Mocambo in Los Angeles, which was almost the most famous west coast jazz club at the time.
In the nature of things, the club owner, Charlie Morrison, turned Ella down, again and again. He tried to be kind, but he simply refused to run the risk of booking an African American performer. “Not only might I lose ticket sales for the night, but having you perform here could also be harmful for my club’s development in the long run,” he told her.
Still, Ella did not give up on her goal. She strongly believed performing at Mocambo could help her enter the mainstream(主流) music world. But she now realized she was going to need some help. So she picked up the telephone and came clean with her friend and fan, Marilyn Monroe, about her goal and setbacks. Marilyn was one of the most favorite white female film stars of the 1950’s.
Marilyn was shocked by what she heard about. As soon as she hung up on Ella, she picked the telephone back up and called Charlie over at Mocambo. She asked him to book Ella at once! But he refused again, and repeated his fearful reasons. So Marilyn sweetened the deal. “Charlie, if you make my friend Ella the leading performer at Mocambo for a full week, I will sit in the front row every single night Ella is there,” she said.
Para. 1: At this point Charlie had to consider the offer. ___________

Dear Wangxue,
I’m glad to receive your letter. I am sorry to know that you are having trouble in life in senior high school. So I’d like to offer my guidance on your learning and living problems.
In your letter, you have mentioned that you have too much pressure to learn science subjects well. In my opinion, you may turn to your teachers for help and make some changes in your learning style. In that way, you can also get along well with your teachers, which plays an important role in your own study. Besides, you have suffered from loneliness because you have few friends. I think it is very normal when you just have spent two months in your new class. It would be a good idea if you can take an active part in school activities, where you can try your best to make more friends. By doing this, you will find there are many lovely friends around you.
I hope you will find my advice useful.
                                      Yours,

67. 第二节 作文2
Para. 1: At this point Charlie had to consider the offer. He knew he would get a great amount of media attention if he announced that Marilyn Monroe was in the house every night for a full week. Marilyn said with certainty, “The reporters will go crazy over this!” Charlie decided to take the chance, so he agreed to make Ella the leading performer at Mocambo for a full week.
Para. 2: As promised, Marilyn sat front and center every night Ella performed. Despite all of the times’ widespread racism, the club was full of people each night. And the excited crowds of people that first rushed into the jazz club to see Marilyn were shocked to see an African American singer standing on the stage. But they quickly fell in love with Ella’s powerful performances and forgot the color of her skin. That one week of performing turned out to be a success and made Ella widely known in Hollywood as a music star. It was all thanks to her strong will, her talent, and some loving help from a friend and fan named Marilyn Monroe.
