After the war in 1743, about 1,500 British soldiers, uninjured but deathly ill, were sent to the army’s hospital. Several men lay in a bed or were put on the floor because of the limited space. Most of the sick had dysentery (痢疾), and everything was covered with human waste, blood and sweat. Dysentery soon gave way to fever. Hundreds died.
John Pringle, a doctor, observed the dying in horror (惊恐). Then he tliought of a way to fight illness. The idea he developed for preventing illness became one of the earliest expressions of the Filth Theory. It held, in brief, that filthy conditions cause diseases and that a clean environment helps prevent them.
Bom in 1707, Pringle was the youngest son of a Scottish family. He had earned the respect of others by lecturing at the University of Edinburgh. When the war broke out, he was chosen as a doctor in the British army. He soon proved his worth. Pringle found the British army lost a quarter of its strength to sickness alone during the war in 1743. Hospitals became the injured soldiers’ other great enemy.
Then Pringle set out to change that arid he worked hard to turn his ideas into orders. He told others to avoid putting the injured soldiers in wet areas and prepare proper toilets for them. Besides, patient space was to be clean and at least 36 square feet for each man. Bed sheets should be changed frequently. Soon, the death rate at the hospital fell by more than half, from 21.4 percent in 1743 to 9.8 percent over the next two years.
Several years later, Pringle published his book Observations on the Diseases of the Army. Being translated (翻译) into many languages, it reached France, Germany, and Italy. Finally, Pringle’s discovery saved many lives.

“Funny or die” has a whole new meaning, thanks to a study published in April in a medicaljoumal. Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infection (感染). Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study on the connection between the sense of humor and death among 53,556 women and men in their country. The team studied the influence of humor on people’s way of thinking, social skills and emotion development, and examined death from different conditions: heart problems, infection and other health problems.
The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the nsk of death from infection — those with high humor scores had a 74 percent reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sexdifferences could be due to a small decrease in humor scores as the men aged. No connection was found for the influence of fiumor on social skills and emotion development.
“The humorous way of thinking plays an important role in people’s personality (性格) and may influence the way people cope with everyday life,” said study co-researcher Sven Svebak. “In this way, it may help reduce fighting in daily life, preventing the build-up of stress.” Although the sense of humor is a natural characteristic (特征), it can also be developed through social activities.
“I expect that children whose parents have no sense of humor when feeing challenges are less likely to develop their sense of humor to cope with everyday life when they grow up,” Sven Svebak said. “But if you had a humorless childhood, never fear — studies show people can learn to be humorous at any age.”
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Humor could benefit people’s health.
B. Joyflil women can live longer than happy men.
C. Women who seldom laugh may fall ill easily.

A. men have poor memories as they age
B. men become less humorous as they grow older
C. men have bad sleeping quality as they grow older
D. men take part in fewer social activities as they age
10. How does the author show the research findings
A. By listing data.
B. By giving examples.
C. By stating arguments.
D. By making experiments.
11. Which of the following would Sven Svebak agree with
A. Humoriess people have an unhappy childhood.
B. Children must learn to be humorous at an early age.
C. Humorous people can better deal with pressure in life.
D. Parents with a sense of humor are better at child education.
D
The story started from a popular video, in which a tourist pulled a flower out of the ground in Tibet and boiled it with other food.
He might not know what he dug up was not an ordinary one but a snow lotus, an extremely rare species. The exact number existing in the wild is unknown, but scientists believe that the species is dying out and people arc not allowed to collect them for private or even scientific use since 2000.
The snow lotus generally only grows above the snowline of the Tibetan Himalayas or Heaven Mountain in Central Asia. In order to survive the harsh environment and strong wind, it grows tliick hair on the outside, which keeps the plant from the cold. And it often has to grow around six to eight years before its only flowering time in life.
Only very few plants and animals survive in such an environment. Therefore, each snow lotus is a key part of a fragile (脆弱的) ecosystem around it. When someone digs one out of the ground, he/she not only wastes the plant’s own years of efforts, but also threatens the ecological (生态的) balance of about one square kilometer around it.
For a long time, many people collect the lotus flowers to sell as herbal (药草的) plants to others, even though their herbal effects are not proved. Regardless of the feet, some traders do misleading advertising about them and illegally sell them at high prices. As a result, the species is in danger.
The snow lotus is not the only plant that suffers from the illegal sale of certain people because they carry a sense of mystery. It is time the law offered stricter protection of these rare plants for the ecological environment.
12. What did the author intend to tell us about the tourist
A. He destroyed an endangered plant.
B. He has good outdoor survival skills.
C. He discovered a special kind of flowers.
D. He has made many popular short videos.
13. Why does the snow lotus have thick hair on the outside
A. To fight for enough living space.
B. To make the flower less obvious.
C. To protect it from extreme conditions.
D. To prevent it from being dug out easily.
14. What does the author mainly suggest in Paragraph 4
A. It is hard for people to find a snow lotus.
B. It takes many years for a snow lotus to Hilly grow.
C. Some rare plants usually grow irr weak environments.
D. The snow lotus is very important to the local ecosystem.
15. What lesson can we probably learn from the text
A. We should call on the public to protect rare plants.
B. We should learn to recognize different plants.
C. We should follow all the laws in our country.
D. We should avoid taking wild plants as food.

I was ready for bed one night. As I planned to turn off the lamp on my bedside table, my eyes fell on the card my brother had given me on our dad’s sixty-eightli birthday. It was a musical card with a photo of Dad smiling inside. When you opened it, a recording of Dad’s songs would play. The card just stood beside my bed.
My dad was a joyful man with a big heart. He always went above and beyond. When my house was on fire a few years ago, it burned down. Luckily, all the family members were safe. Dad took it upon himself to make things right. He called everyone he knew to raise the money for rebuilding the house. In the meantime, I, my husband and our four kids moved into his house.
There was one thing that I loved most about Dad: his singing voice. When I was growing up, he was always singing us songs like the ones recorded in the card. It always made us laugh. Part of the fun for us kids was that, despite his wonderfully deep voice, Dad sang songs to share joy. I could always pick out his voice from the crowd.
With those in my mind, I turned off the light and quickly fell asleep. I was awoken a few hours later by a loud sound. Dad’s voice was filling the room. It was from the card! I jumped out of bed, closing the card before the whole house woke up. How did that card start playing I thought. I checked the windows in my bedroom. I found a window was left open. It must be the wind that blew the card open.
Then I heard a little noise. It seemed that the noise came from the laundry room (洗衣房). We lived on a farm and raised a dozen baby chicks. Too young to be outside, the chicks were in a plastic bin in our laundry room, under the warnith of a heat lamp. I opened the door to the laundry room and was hit with the smell of smoke.
Paragraph 1:
The heat lamp had fallen, hitting into the bin!

Paragraph 2:

第二节
Paragraph 1:
The heat lamp had fallen, hitting into the bin! The plastic was starting to burn and the room was filled with smoke. The baby chicks were making noise in alarm and staying in the far corner of the bin. I rushed into action, using something to take out the lamp and put it on the floor. Then I tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. The chicks would need a new home, but they were safe.
Paragraph 2:
Fortunately, the fire was put out at last. I also went to check the kitchen and the living room, and everything was OK. I let out a breath. If the card hadn’t been blown by the wind, what could have happened Perhaps another house fire. Luckily, we were safe. Each of my children was still fast asleep. Our house, which Dad had rebuilt with heart, was as good as new. Thanks to Dad’s singing voice, a potential disaster was avoided.
