The Florida native Brooke Sweat grew up with two older brothers. She was always running after them, playing whatever sport they were into. When she went off to college, she met Nick, a professional beach volleyball player, who became her husband later.
“At first, beach volleyball was just so new to me, even though I played indoor volleyball all my life,” Sweat explained. “I loved that it was something that my husband and I could go do and spend a lot of time on together, which made us enjoy every moment in life.”

We all know that a powerful body posture (姿势) may help people feel more confident. But will it work on students A new study by researchers from Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg is carried out to find the link. And it does provide evidence that simple body postures can help students feel better in school.
Some body postures don’t need further explanation. When a man sits with his arms crossed behind his head, resting his feet on a table, he is probably feeling very self-confident. Arms folded in front of one’s body and a bent back, on the other hand, typically mean anxiety and insecurity. “Body language is not just about expressing feelings, it can also have a great influence on how a person feels,” explains Robert Korner from the Institute of Psychology at MLU.
Research on powerful body postures tries to find out the extent (程度) to which a certain body posture might influence a personas feelings and self-confidence. Up to now, most of the research has been about studying the effects on adults. Korner’s study is the first to examine children. “Children from the age of five are able to recognize and understand the body postures of others,” the professor adds.
The researchers carried out their experiment with 108 fourth graders. One group was to assume (装出) two open postures for one minute each. The other group posed with their arms folded in front of them and their heads down. The children then finished a series of psychological tests. The children who had assumed an open posture showed better moods and reported higher self-confidence than the children in the other group. The effects were particularly manifest when it came to questions concerning school. “Here, powerful body postures had the strongest effect on the children’s self-confidence,” says Korner.
“Teachers could try and see whether this method helps their students.” However, Korner states that expectations about this technique should be mild. The effects were only short-term. Serious problems or mental illness must be treated by trained professionals,

Nintendo’s Game Boy came out in 1989 and was an instant success. Kids could keep themselves delighted on car trips, plane rides, or any boring places they tended to go to as long as batteries lasted. Now a new hand-held video game console (操纵台) is created. It never needs batteries and could go on playing and playing. It runs on taps (轻敲) of the user and solar power.
“It’s the first device that harvests energy from user actions,” said Northwestern’s Josiah Hester, who co-led the research. “When you press a button, the device changes that energy into something that powers your gaming,” he said. It is also equipped with solar panels around the screen, which can produce power.
The researchers presented their new game console on September 15, 2020. When the device changed between power sources, there was a short stop, which would drive gamers crazy. Right now, it is a task in progress and has been improved a lot. “Everything is saved so the players don’t lose their place, even if the game is in mid-jump,” said Josiah Hester. However, the researchers said on a cloudy day, taps give about 10 seconds of gameplay, so there is still a long way to go before game console can truly go battery-free.
The researchers hope that their device will raise awareness of the danger of batteries. “Batteries eventually end up in the garbage. They are hard to recycle in the environment. We want to build devices that are more sustainable (可持续的) and can last for decades,” said TU Delft’s Przemyslaw Pawelczak, who co-led the research. “Sustainable gaming will come true, and we are making a major step in that direction — by getting rid of the battery completely.”
Someday, many of our electronic devices will be solar-powered or self-powered. Cell phones will not have to be charged, and laptops will be able to be used anywhere without having to search for a power supply.
