The Florida native Brooke Sweat grew up with two older brothers. She was always running after them, playing whatever sport they were into. When she went off to college, she met Nick, a professional beach volleyball player, who became her husband later.
“At first, beach volleyball was just so new to me, even though I played indoor volleyball all my life,” Sweat explained. “I loved that it was something that my husband and I could go do and spend a lot of time on together, which made us enjoy every moment in life.”
Finally, Sweat began to take a more competitive interest in the sport. “My then-partner Kristen Batt and I were having pretty good finishes,” Sweat recalled. By 2012, Sweat had packed up her life in Florida and traveled to train in California. The move was difficult for the athlete. “I had told my family and myself before, ‘I’m never moving to California,’” Sweat said. “Florida is home; this is where I want to be; this is where I grew up.”
When she headed to Brazil with partner Lauren Frederik, the pair faced difficulties. The two-woman team had an up-and-down year. Those disappointing performances only made them more determined to leave everything on the court in Rio. “It definitely made us stronger,” Sweat said “There’s going to be more hard moments and now we know how to handle them. I think we’ll make it.”
Sweat was ready to see all of her hard work and sacrifice (牺牲) pay off in Rio and she hoped to make her loved ones proud, especially her mom, who’s been the glue (胶水) while Sweat spent years traveling for her sport. “She has pulled our family together no matter where we are in the world. She is our spiritual guidance. She always knows what to say, how to say it, and when to say it. She’s just been my everything in the journey” Sweat said.

We all know that a powerful body posture (姿势) may help people feel more confident. But will it work on students A new study by researchers from Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg is carried out to find the link. And it does provide evidence that simple body postures can help students feel better in school.
Some body postures don’t need further explanation. When a man sits with his arms crossed behind his head, resting his feet on a table, he is probably feeling very self-confident. Arms folded in front of one’s body and a bent back, on the other hand, typically mean anxiety and insecurity. “Body language is not just about expressing feelings, it can also have a great influence on how a person feels,” explains Robert Korner from the Institute of Psychology at MLU.
Research on powerful body postures tries to find out the extent (程度) to which a certain body posture might influence a personas feelings and self-confidence. Up to now, most of the research has been about studying the effects on adults. Korner’s study is the first to examine children. “Children from the age of five are able to recognize and understand the body postures of others,” the professor adds.
The researchers carried out their experiment with 108 fourth graders. One group was to assume (装出) two open postures for one minute each. The other group posed with their arms folded in front of them and their heads down. The children then finished a series of psychological tests. The children who had assumed an open posture showed better moods and reported higher self-confidence than the children in the other group. The effects were particularly manifest when it came to questions concerning school. “Here, powerful body postures had the strongest effect on the children’s self-confidence,” says Korner.
“Teachers could try and see whether this method helps their students.” However, Korner states that expectations about this technique should be mild. The effects were only short-term. Serious problems or mental illness must be treated by trained professionals,

D. What effects postures have on students’ feelings.
10. What does the underlined word “manifest” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Strange. B. Obvious.
C. Unclear. D. Manageable.
11. What is Korner’s attitude to teachers’ applying the findings in teaching

Nintendo’s Game Boy came out in 1989 and was an instant success. Kids could keep themselves delighted on car trips, plane rides, or any boring places they tended to go to as long as batteries lasted. Now a new hand-held video game console (操纵台) is created. It never needs batteries and could go on playing and playing. It runs on taps (轻敲) of the user and solar power.
“It’s the first device that harvests energy from user actions,” said Northwestern’s Josiah Hester, who co-led the research. “When you press a button, the device changes that energy into something that powers your gaming,” he said. It is also equipped with solar panels around the screen, which can produce power.
The researchers presented their new game console on September 15, 2020. When the device changed between power sources, there was a short stop, which would drive gamers crazy. Right now, it is a task in progress and has been improved a lot. “Everything is saved so the players don’t lose their place, even if the game is in mid-jump,” said Josiah Hester. However, the researchers said on a cloudy day, taps give about 10 seconds of gameplay, so there is still a long way to go before game console can truly go battery-free.
The researchers hope that their device will raise awareness of the danger of batteries. “Batteries eventually end up in the garbage. They are hard to recycle in the environment. We want to build devices that are more sustainable (可持续的) and can last for decades,” said TU Delft’s Przemyslaw Pawelczak, who co-led the research. “Sustainable gaming will come true, and we are making a major step in that direction — by getting rid of the battery completely.”
Someday, many of our electronic devices will be solar-powered or self-powered. Cell phones will not have to be charged, and laptops will be able to be used anywhere without having to search for a power supply.
12. What’s special about the new video game console
A. It helps kids to develop good habits.
B. It must be played under good sunlight.
C. It may allow long time gaming without batteries.
D. It would help users get over tiredness on a journey.
13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Why the device is invented.
B. How the device attracts users.
C. How the device gets energy.
D. When the device works well.
14. Why are Josiah Hester’s words mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. To show the device comes in many types.
B. To state the device has made great progress.
C. To tell the device gives a perfect experience.
D. To prove the device still needs to be improved.
15. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A. Replacing batteries can be costly.
B. Effective action should be taken to reduce battery waste.
C. Researchers make great efforts to build fashionable devices.
D. Environment-friendly devices will become a reality someday.

An extra (群众演员) is a person usually employed to play a very small part in a film. 16 If you live in one of these cities, extra work is easier to reach. So if you decide to be an extra, first have a good knowledge of the job.
You don’t have to be very pretty to be a movie extra. 17 In other words, having a common appearance is often more likely to land you a job of being an extra. Why If an extra has a very attractive appearance, the audience will probably pay attention to you, instead of the stars of the film.
18 You may be required to walk past the same bench 50 times, or repeatedly take a drink from a glass of water. Since films require many takes (镜头), you need to repeat some activities for long hours. A scene could be filmed for 8-12 hours at a time.
However, being an extra can be often fun. Some scenes in a movie can be interesting. But don’t expect it to be a job that will provide you with a generous income. 19 But if you get regular work, you may be able to make a living at least.
There’s one more thing you need to know about the job. It may be acceptable to often look at your favorite stars. But respect the privacy (隐私) of them. And only talk to them if necessary.
If not, you may get fired quickly. 20
A. But some make lots of money.
B. Most extras are not quite well-paid.
C. You have to be very patient as an extra.
D. Some of the stars may love talking to you.
E. New York, Los Angeles and so on are key places for extras.
F. So it’s okay to admire your favorite stars, but keep your distance.
G. In fact, most filmmakers hope to find ordinary people for their films.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Our family was eager to move away from the cold and snowy Midwest when my husband Tom retired. We chose South Carolina and found a house in a quiet town. During the first few weeks after moving day, we were busy from dawn to dusk unpacking boxes. We drove on unfamiliar streets in search of a grocery store. We located City Hall and the post office, and we chose a bank. Sometimes we would meet our neighbors, but aside from quick introductions, we hadn’t really made connections.
As time went by, I missed our former neighbors. It had been nice to know names and share friendly conversations. Our old neighborhood had many people in our age range. There weren’t many young couples, probably because the houses were old.
Our new neighborhood was just the opposite. The residents were mostly young professionals with small children. We rarely saw anyone outside, and if we did, they were mowing (割) the lawn or jogging. It was hard to chat when people were busy. But I still hoped that we would meet people soon.
We had a community page online that I checked often. It informed us of HOA meetings and other news of the neighborhood. People would post if they had a sofa for sale or needed a recommendation for a painter. I usually scanned (浏览) it quickly, but one day a post from a young mother caught my eye.
She had an appointment that afternoon and couldn’t find anyone to care for her baby. She hoped someone could help her. I had run a home daycare center for many years when my children were small, and I enjoyed it very much. I started to type a reply to this woman and gave her my phone number.
She called immediately, “You are a lifesaver!” It was the greeting I got when I answered. She was just two blocks away, so I walked over to meet her. She opened the door with an eighteen-month-old baby in her arms. “This is Macy,” she informed me. She then quickly handed me Macy and rushed out the door. The child felt heavy in my arms. I set her down, and we looked at each other. “Show me your toys,” I suggested .

Macy proudly handed me a bunny toy with a wet ear.

Dear Fred,
I am sorry to learn that you have been in a poor mental state recently and I sincerely hope my letter will give you comfort.
It’s important for you to do well on behalf of your school in the coming Youth Sports Meeting. However, it’s unwise to put too much stress on yourself. I think what you should do is try your best to make preparations. Besides, eat well, sleep well and do something else for relaxation. I’m expecting to hear your good news.
Best wishes!

第二节
Paragraph 1:
Macy proudly handed me a bunny toy with a wet ear. While we were playing with the bunny, I found a basket filled with picture books. Picking out a few, I invited both Macy and her bunny to sit with me. We spent the next half-hour reading. Before I knew it, Macy’s mother was back. I had enjoyed a special afternoon. Macy had kept me laughing. I thought perhaps I could find some children here to care for.
Paragraph 2:
Then, I developed a successful little business. Now I watch children of all ages. I sometimes walk to their homes, but usually, they come to me. Our dining room is now a playroom. My closets hold games, and my bookshelves hold picture books. Besides the joy that the children bring, there’s another benefit. I’ve met so many neighbors now. It’s nice to know them by name. I have a wonderful collection of new friends who will greet me.
