The United States has more tornadoes (龙卷风) than any other country in the world. In a normal year there are 800 or 1,000 tornadoes. Most happen in the middle part of the country.Tornadoes form when warm and cool air meet.In the Midwest, the warm air from the Gulf of Mexico often meets the cold air from Canada.
The usual tornado season is March through May.Tornadoes form most often in the afternoon and early evening. There is often no warning of a tornado.People who live in the Midwest know the signs (征兆) of tornado activity. The sky becomes dark, often a greenish color.Dark clouds appear in the sky and there is often a large hail (冰雹).Suddenly, there is a loud sound, like a train or a jet plane.Sometimes, two, three, five, ten or more tornadoes can form over a large area.
This type of tornado activity hit Oklahoma and Kansas in May 1999.The day was stormy, with heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon. As the storms continued, tornadoes began to form.Dozens of tornadoes hit towns and neighborhoods in Oklahoma, then in Kansas. Some stayed on the ground for several hours, destroying everything they touched. The tornadoes killed 43 people and injured 600 others. They destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. In some areas, not one home stood. In other areas, the tornadoes destroyed every home on the left side of the street, but didn’t touch any homes on the right side. The tornadoes lifted people and cars into the air and then threw them back down to earth. So it is important to know where to hide and how to protect yourself in the face of a tornado.

Picking it up, she heard a guard shouting.“There is a fire! Get out of there!”

Skaar called out to her office mate Stephen Oksas, who also stayed late to work. But when they got to the hallway, they were met by a cloud of black smoke.Rushing back, Skaar shut the door and filled the space at the bottom of the door with her jacket to keep the smoke out.
Then they called 911.Before they could call their families, however, the line went dead. That meant that they were completely cut off from the outside world. All they could do was wait and hope someone would come to rescue them.

Natural disasters are nature’s anger, which can upset even the most developed countries and make them into ruins. There is nothing we can do to stop such disasters happening. In that case it is quite possible that we are all short of electricity, water, food, etc.The basic necessities to be stored for times of disasters are explained below.
Drinking water is a must for any human to survive. It has to be stored based on the number of people in the household.A normal human would consume a gallon of water a day.Food is an important requirement.Especially in times of disasters, our bodies would be weak.Rich food is very important in such times of danger.Food like dry fruits would be ideal as they last long and give us energy.A First Aid Kit and basic medicines are a must and do remember to store some of them.Certain basic things such as scissors and soaps would be handy. It is a good idea to have a radio to be updated with the ongoing news.
An Earthquake Preparedness Kit would be of great help in fighting against an earthquake in the places where earthquakes take place very often. However, this can happen anywhere in the world so it is a must and should be well equipped in advance. There are wind storms that can leave behind a trail of destruction. The US has suffered from many tornadoes.Taking steps in advance to handle such unforeseen circumstances (情况) is a must.It is a good idea to plan an ideal place which would be helpful in protecting you and your family from the storm.Floods and other natural disasters probably happen unexpectedly someday, so we need to make preparations for them.
Do take steps in advance.Being well prepared is the only way that would help us recover from such disasters.

A new mom from Michigan headed for the airport on Thursday, nervous about flying alone with her 3-month-old baby. When her daughter started crying even before take-off,her fears for the flight—to surprise her husband, a US Army soldier at Fort Rucker, Alabama—seemed acceptable.
The couple seated next to her reacted just as Rebekka Garvison had feared, looking visibly unhappy about sitting next to a fussy baby. Ms. Garvison moved to a new seat, hoping it would help. When the baby’s cries continued, the woman sitting next to her asked if she could try.
Garvison later described in a grateful Facebook post how the woman, Nyfesha Miller, had the magic touch with her baby. “As soon as she had her, Rylee was looking out the window and stopped crying,” Garvison recalled. “When we got in the air she fell right asleep and slept in her lap the whole flight until we got to our gate.” Garvison told The Huffington Post she has been in touch with Ms. Miller almost daily since the flight.
Garvison’s post has been shared more than 84,000 times, and received hundreds of warm comments. “Years ago, the same kind of thing happened to me,” wrote one mother. “It was a seven-hour flight and I had my ten-month-old little boy with me. A nun was sitting beside me and she walked him up and down the passage when he got fussy. It was such a relief for me and is something I will never forget.”
Not everyone has had happy experiences with baby air travelers. One airline is considering opening a “baby class” for airplanes with flight attendant nannies, reported The Christian Science Monitor’s Meredith Hamilton. For now, parents can hope to be seated beside someone like Ms. Miller on their next flight. “Nyfesha Miller, you will never understand how happy this act of kindness has made my family,” wrote Garvison.
32.Why did Garvison move to a new seat?__D__
A.She could have a better view.
B.Her baby wanted to change seats.

D.Her crying baby annoyed the couple beside her.

A.Generous and clam. B.Modest and elegant.
C.Caring and friendly. D.Skilled and proud.
34.Why did the author use another example?__A__
A.To show how common the problem is.
B.To call on more strangers to act.
C.To prove Garvison’s story is popular.
D.To share experiences with new moms.
35.What is the text mainly about?__B__

Acres of diamonds

The story was about a farmer who lived in Africa. He became extremely crazy about looking for diamonds when avisitor showed him a diamond he discovered somewhere. At that time, diamonds were already discovered in abundanceon the African continent. This farmer got so excited about the idea of millions of dollars’ worth of diamonds that he soldhis farm in search of diamonds in other places. He wandered all over the continent, as the years passed by, constantly searching for diamonds and wealth, which he never found.Eventually he went completely broke and threw himself intoa river and drowned.
Meanwhile, the new owner of his farm picked up an unusual-looking rock about the size of an egg and put it on his fireplace as a sort of curiosity.A visitor stopped by and looked at the rock carefully. He told the new owner of the farm that the funny-looking rock on his fireplace was about the biggest diamond that had ever been found. The new owner of the farm said,“Heck, the whole farm is covered with them.”And sure enough, it was.

Dear Susan,
I am Li Hua, whom you sent to the hospital last month. I am writing to thank you for your help.
On Monday,I rode my bike to school as usual. Because of lack of sleep the night before, I felt a little tired. When a car rushed to me at the corner, I fell off the bike and my leg was hurt badly, but the car drove away quickly. Luckily, you were just at the site. You called 120 to send me to the hospital at once.
Without your help, I would not have recovered so quickly. Thank you again.

参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
The farm turned out to be the Kimberly Diamond Mine. The new farmer became the richest person the world has ever known. The original farmer was actually standing on “Acres of diamonds” until he sold his farm. It was really a pity that he failed to realize there were diamonds in his own land. He had traveled far away in search of diamonds, but in vain. If he had dug deep in the field, the story would have a different ending.
Paragraph 2:
Dr Conwell told this story many times and attracted enormous audiences. This story does not get old. It will be true forever. Actually each of us is right in the middle of our own “Acres of diamonds”. If we are willing to explore the ground we are standing on instead of traveling far to look for diamonds, we are sure to find treasure and wealth that we long to own. Opportunity does not just come along. It is there all the time. What we need to do is just discover it.
