Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut,” Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. “She used to cuddle up (蜷缩) with me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds. “In fact, parents are first on the list,”said Michael
Riera, the author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the teen years,” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their
children a mental break, for children also need freedom. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager with their children is a better way to know them.

Adolescence (青少年时期)is a time when children act more negative (消极的)and have more problems with their family. They spend more time alone and with their friends and less time with their family. Adolescents are interested in talking about themselves and about their relationships with others. They want to understand who they are becoming and what others think and feel about them.
They want to talk about how they are different from their parents and the rest of the world. They are beginning to think that their parents are not perfect any more.
Research suggests that the best parent-child relationships have lots of communication. Good communication with children requires communication styles and behaviours appropriate to the age of the child. Here are some good ways for parents to communicate with adolescents.
Be actively sensitive to the adolescent experience. Remember, each adolescent is going through major social and physical changes. Practise putting yourself in the adolescent’s place when you find yourself disagreeing.
Use conversation as a chance to keep up with adolescent activities and relationships. Stay interested in the adolescents and gently ask questions and find answers for adolescents’ behaviour.
Although adolescents ask for independence (独立), you can best maintain the relationship by providing a balance between expecting personal responsibility from the adolescents and offering support.
Be flexible (灵活的). Try to understand the adolescents first before trying to be understood yourself. Keeping the adult-child relationship is perhaps the most helpful thing that one can do for supporting the adolescents through these years.
Understand that the adolescents are developing ideas that may be different from your own. Unless these ideas place the adolescents in danger, accept the adolescent’s beliefs as an example of their developing individuality (个性).
( )21. Which of the following is NOT true about adolescents
A. It takes them more time to be alone and with their friends.

D. They start to know that their parents are not perfect people.

Doing housework makes me happy
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Doing housework is part of my family life. It’s necessary to share housework with other family members. Here I’d like to share one of my experiences of doing housework with you. Last Mother’s Day, I made a special dinner for my mum. However, it didn’t work as well as I thought. I hurt my fingers while cutting carrots, and I

forgot to put salt into the dishes. When my mum came back home, she was happy to taste them. Although I wasn’t satisfied with the dishes, I found it not easy to do housework.
From this experience, I’ve learnt that doing housework can not only help me but also build a closer relationship with my family. I advise more and more teenagers to share housework with family members.
THANKS!
