Today I visited the Terracotta Army, probably the most wonderful craftsmanship in the city of Xi'an, China. I saw thousands of ancient warriors made out of terracotta. These warriors are over 2,000 years old.
The warriors were found underground, below a farm. In 1974, several farmers were digging a well (挖井) when they found broken pieces of the terracotta warriors. The government brought in archaeologists (考古学家) to dig further.
The archaeologists found thousands of ancient life-size terracotta warriors. As they dug further, they even found terracotta horses. At last, they found a whole terracotta army!
The warriors are amazing. No two warriors are the same. They are all different. Some warriors are standing and some are sitting. Some seem angry, while others appear cheerful. All of the warriors seem to have their own personality (性格).
Why was the army there Historians believe it was created to protect the tomb (坟墓) of Emperor Qin Shihuang. The emperor built himself one of the world's largest tombs. He felt this huge army would protect him in the afterlife.
Many people call the Terracotta Army the eighth wonder of the ancient world. I think it is surely worthy of the name.
