三、阅读理解
If there is one play that best represents modern Chinese drama (戏剧), it is probably Thunderstorm by playwright(剧作家) Cao Yu.
Thunderstorm tells the story of two families living in the 1930s. The young master of the Zhou family falls in love with his maid (女佣) Lu Sifeng. But it turns out that they are brother and sister. The complicated (复杂的) relationship between the
Zhou and Lu families leads to tragedy —the leading roles either die or go mad in the end. The drama’s four scenes take place within just one day.
Thunderstorm is the most famous play by Cao, who is known as the “father of modern Chinese drama”. On Cao’s 110th birthday, his classic works were being staged across the country. The Beijing People’s Art Theatre put on Thunderstorm in September—66 years after its first appearance in the theatre.
“When a play is adapted (改编) and staged again and again and audience from different generations share the emotions in it, it becomes a classic naturally,” Wan Fang, Cao’s daughter and a playwright herself, told China Daily. “The key to creating a classic work is the writer’s sincerity (真诚).”
Cao’s sincerity has made Thunderstorm a classic. Cao wrote the play in the 1930s when he was still a Tsinghua
University student. He came to know many tragic people and saw the dark side of society, and wrote about these things in his plays. Lu Dahai, a coal miner (煤矿工人) in Thunderstorm, was based on a worker Cao met on a train.
“There is so much dramatic power in Thunderstorm,” said French drama director Eric Lacascade. He said the play not only shows the unfairness of society, but also the struggles (挣
扎) of women, the longing (渴望) for freedom and the torture of desire (欲望的折磨).
