People read books less in these days. With the invention of radio, television and most recently, the Internet and computer games, it seems that reading books is no longer a
popular activity. However, I still believe that books are an important part of our lives.
Books offer an outstanding wealth of learning and at a cheaper price than taking a course. Books can make people cleverer, because heavy readers have greater knowledge of how things work and who or what people were.
Everything in today’s society requires reading. Imagine trying to do something as simple as reading the directions on a
medicine bottle without good reading skills. Someone could not understand them and become very sick or even die. Sometimes, you must be able to understand what is written and explain the meaning of them.
Some people say that reading is a waste of time and we can do better things with our time. Even if we don’t read books, we still read every day, and reading books can broaden our
horizon. Reading is one of the greatest things we can do in our spare time.
With a book, you can travel anywhere you want, do anything you want, and talk to anyone you want. Reading is very important in our lives, no matter your age. So I think people should read books.

It is believed that Huck Finn is based on a childhood friend of Mark Twain’s. In fact, Twain was not the only writer that based a fictional character on a real-life person. There are other examples.
Severus Snape and John Nettleship.
Severus Snape is a skillful wizard teaching magic in Harry Potter. The writer, J. K. Rowling, once said that the character was based on a teacher of hers.
The teacher turned out to be John Nettleship, who taught Rowling Chemistry. At first, Nettleship felt surprised. “I know I am a strict teacher,” he said. “But I don’t think I am as bad as Snape!” On second thoughts, however, he said that he was so
ill-tempered that most of his students are afraid of making him mad. Also, he used to wear long hair and have an untidy lab. That sounds familiar to Harry Potter fans.
Alice and Alice Liddell.
Famously, Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is based on Alice Liddell.
Carroll was close to the Liddell family. One day, ten-year-old Alice asked Carroll to tell her a new story. Carroll began to
create his famous tale of Alice and what happened after she fell through the rabbit hole. The little girl liked the story so much that she asked him to write it down.
Dill and Truman Capote.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee based Dill on her childhood friend, Truman Capote. Capote once said, “Lee was my best friend. Have you ever read To Kill a Mockingbird I’m a character in that story! The story takes place just in the town where we lived!”

Charlotte’s Web is a popular American children’s book about the friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a spider named Charlotte. The writer, E. B. White, shows that a real friend will help you even though he or she has nothing to get from doing so.

the words is tiring and difficult for her. Charlotte is a true friend. She helps Wilbur for only one reason—she cares about him.
Templeton, the rat, on the other hand, is not a real friend to Wilbur. Templeton only helps others when there is something in it for him. When he is asked to help save Wilbur’s life, he says “no” at first. Later on, he agrees to help, but only because he wants to keep eating Wilbur’s meals.
At the end of the book, Wilbur learns the true meaning of friendship. He helps Charlotte to save her babies. He does this not for other reasons, but because he cares about his friend.

While vampire (吸血鬼) stories first appeared hundreds of years ago, they have never been more popular than they are today. Stephenie Meyer is best known for her best-selling Twilight (暮光之城) series. The books have been translated into more than 50 languages and made into five hit movies.
So what is it about these drinkers of human blood that continues to interest us Arlene Russo, author of The Real Twilight: True Stories of Modern Day Vampires, is not surprised by the success of Twilight. “Why wouldn’t you be interested in a creature that never grows old and can live forever Isn’t that what most people really want The secret of staying young forever ” she said in an interview.
But in the eyes of British researcher Deborah L. Wells, the reason that vampires never die is that they change with our culture. “We create very different vampires to fit different times,” she said. “Edward Cullen, lead vampire in Twilight, is not the same as Count Dracula in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula.”
Different as they are, Wells believes vampires are “the perfect way for us to look at our own worries”. Stoker’s Dracula is powerful, yet old and ugly. The Irish writer’s book is really about the fear of the fall of the British Empire (大英帝国).
“In many ways, the vampire story shows teenage worries,” said Wells. “The strong emotions (情感) of the relationship with the vampire match the strong feelings of having your first love. Your first real love, it really feels like life and death.”
( )16. When are the vampire stories the most popular
A. 70 years ago. B. 100 years ago.

C. Because vampires can stay young forever.
D. Because vampires drink human blood.
( )19. Which of the following is TRUE?

Although it’s said Van Gogh(1853) sold only one painting during his lifetime, different theories exist(存在).
It is true that The Red Vineyard is the only painting sold during Van Gogh’s lifetime, and that is officially recorded and accepted by the art world. It’s recorded that Van Gogh started painting at 27, and died at 37. His famous paintings were produced
after he went to France in 1888, only two years before he died. So it would be clear that he did not sell many.
However, others disagree. The leading Van Gogh scholar, Marc, is one of them. Though the story that Van Gogh just sold one painting still goes around, he insists that Van Gogh sold at least two.
Also, according to the Van Gogh Museum website, Van Gogh actually sold a number of paintings for living during his lifetime. His first money came from his uncle, who was an art dealer(经销商). In order to help Van Gogh’s career, he ordered 19 paintings. And Van Gogh himself would often trade his paintings for food or art supplies when he was younger.
Van Gogh died in July of 1890. His brother was a wise dealer and saved lots of paintings by Van Gogh. His greatest wish was to make the works more widely known and make much money. Sadly he himself died just six months later. He left a large collection of art to his wife, who sold some of Van Gogh’s works, lent as many as she could to exhibitions, and published(出版) many of Van Gogh’s letters to his brother. Without her, Van Gogh would never have become as famous as he is today.
( )21. When did Van Gogh pass away
A. In 1853. B. In 1880. C. In 1888. D. In 1890.
( )22. What can we infer(推断) from Paragraph 4
