number是句子的核心名词，表示“数量”，是单数形式，所以谓语动词是has increased。
语法上，将这种主语和谓语在数上的匹配称作“主谓一致”。
当主语为复数概念时，谓语动词用复数形式与之匹配；
当主语为单数概念时，谓语动词用单数形式。
the number of +可数名词复数 ……的数量
该短语作主语时，谓语动词用单数。

a number of… 若干的, 一些, 许多 (修饰可数名词) 相当于 several。作主语时, 谓语动词应用复数形式。如果强调数量大, 还可在number前用 large, great, good等词修饰，以表示程度。
