Unit 5 Working the Land 单元测试
一、阅读理解
In 2011, during his freshman year at the University of Maryland, Simon was struck by how much food was thrown away in the college cafeteria. "I was shocked to see someone buy a full sandwich, eat half of it, and throw the other half out," said Simon. "It was not the value I grew up with." For him, discarded food was a "natural goldmine" where he could source to do good.
Four years later, Simon co-founded Imperfect Produce, a subscription-based home-delivery service for discounted "ugly" fruits and vegetables that are perfectly good on the inside, but otherwise rejected from the food supply chain for their looks.
"Up to 20% of the fruits and vegetables grown on farms in America are thrown away because the produce doesn't meet grocery stores' standards," said Simon. "It's often for discoloration, scarring on the surface caused by the fruit rubbing against a tree limb or an atypical shape," he said. "Sometimes it's the size." Simon, 29, and Chesler, 27, decided to source this "ugly" produce directly from farms and deliver it to customers for about 30% less than conventional grocery store prices.
"The reason why we created Imperfect Produce as a direct-to-consumer business is because grocery stores didn't want to partner with us," said Simon. "So we became our own store." The San Francisco-based service launched in August 2015. Today, Imperfect Produce has more than 200, 000 subscribers in 22 cities. The company sources its produce from 250 growers nationwide, and slightly more than half of it is organic. To date, Simon said the service has helped recover 40 million pounds of food from going to waste.
Simon declined to disclose income but said this year's sales are expected to double last year's. The business is not yet profitable, but he hopes to expand the service to 40 cities by the end of 2019 and eventually take the company public at some point.
1.Why are many fruits and vegetables wasted
A.They are not tasty.
B.They are poorly looking.
C.They are not nutritious.
D.They are not good inside.
2.What made Simon create Imperfect Produce as a direct-to-consumer business
A.Relatively high prices offered by him.
B.His desire to offer convenient service to others.
C.The wish to set up his own business.
D.Grocery stores' refusal to cooperate with him.
3.What can be inferred about Simon
A.He thinks a lot about the wasted food.
B.He wants to help the poor.
C.He expects to make profits from his business.
D.He has expanded his service to 40 cities.
Big changes in agriculture are taking place in Singapore. The small, Southeast Asian nation is leading a farming revolution, according to the Reuters news agency.
Singapore covers around 720 square kilometers of land and only one percent of that land area is used for agriculture. Food production costs are higher there than the rest of Southeast Asia. As climate change and population growth threaten food supplies, the pressure on new farmers is to answer the governments call to "grow more with less".
"Whenever I talk about food security in Singapore, I tell people not to think about land — think about space, because you can go upwards and sideways," said Paul Teng, an agriculture professor at Nanyang Technological University.
There are more than 30 vertical(垂直的) farms in Singapore — ones that grow up, not across, the land. Sustenir Agriculture is one of these businesses. Its hydroponic(无土栽培的) farm grows non-native foods like cherry tomatoes and strawberries inside buildings under artificial lighting. Then it sells the produce to local supermarkets and online stores. Sustenir raised $ 16 million from investors (投资者) last year. The money will be used to expand operations in Singapore.
However, not everyone thinks the new technology is best. Egg farmer William Ho says the government should not depend so much on agriculture technology businesses. "Many of them have failed. That's why I'm always asking the government why it doesn't invest in us old-timers. We are more practical," he said. Professor Paul Teng said an issue for urban farmers is that the high cost of the technology makes their products too pricey for many people.
1.What does the second paragraph mainly discuss
A.High food production costs. B.Reasons for changes in agriculture.
C.Agricultural technology businesses. D.Sale expansion of food markets.
2.Which is the way to achieve food security according to Paul Teng
A.Exploring more space. B.Buying more food.
C.Enlarging farmland. D.Investing more money.
3.What do we know about the old-timers
A.They work on high-tech farms. B.They benefit from pricey products.
C.They reduce production costs. D.They need the government's support.
4.Where is this passage probably taken from
A.A guidebook. B.A brochure. C.A newspaper. D.A journal.
Sooner or later, most students are to take some form of English examinations. Often the more successful students are better prepared. However, sometimes students who do well have better test-taking skills. These abilities really have nothing to do with understanding English better. They are skills that make taking the test easier, and therefore provide better results.
Here are some very important — and often ignored — guidelines(指导方针) to take a test successfully.
Do not insist on completing each question before going to the next. This is extremely important. Remember one question may only be worth one point! You will become nervous when you fail to find out its answer, making you lose your concentration and leading to worse results. However, answering the questions you are sure you know results in your being more relaxed and feeling more confident.
Go through the test a second time to work out the answers to more difficult questions. Sometimes questions asked are answered in later questions asking for different things.
Usually (but not always) a strong first impulse (冲动) means we know the answer and we don't really have to think about it too much. Going back to think about it usually makes you unsure and often causes a mistake. This is very common, so be very careful!
If you don't know the answer, write something. If you are answering a 4-possibility multiple-choice question you will still have a 25% chance of being correct!
Taking a test is as much for you as for your teacher, so never cheat. If you cheat, you won't help yourself in the long run.
1.In the first paragraph, the writer stresses the importance of ________.
A.better preparations for exams B.better understanding of English
C.better skills at taking exams D.better results of taking exams
2.When taking an exam, what are you advised to do
A.To first answer the questions which are easier for you.
B.To rethink about the answers that you've written too much.
C.To search the test paper for all the answers to the questions.
D.To give up the questions whose answers you don't know.
3.It is common that many students ________.
A.pay much attention to their test-taking skills B.often give up a difficult test halfway
C.often get higher results by cheating D.don't believe in their first impulse
4.What would be the best title of the passage
A.Effective Studying Methods B.Effective Test-taking Skills
C.Getting Better Exam Results D.Being Successful Students
Today, the world's diversity (多样性) of food crops is quickly decreasing. But scientists around the world are taking action. They are building seed banks. At seed banks, scientists store the seeds of many different crops.
There are now about 1,400 seed banks around the world. However, some banks are in warm countries. If the electricity fails, the seeds will get too hot and die. Other seed banks are in countries troubled by war. Sometimes people damage the seed banks. If this happens, valuable seeds can be lost forever!
The organisation Global Crop Diversity Trust decided they wanted to deal with this problem. So, they decided to build a global seed bank. This seed bank would contain a back-up, or extra copy, of all the world's seeds. Smaller seed banks would still collect and keep local seeds. But they would also send copies of their seeds to the global bank.
Scientists from the Global Crop Diversity Trust chose the cold, snowy mountains of Svalbard, Norway to build the global seed bank—the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (斯瓦尔巴全球种子库). Organisations, farmers, or local seed banks store their extra seeds there. And the people who place their seeds in the vault are the only people who can take them out. They pay to ship their seeds to Norway, but it does not cost them any money to store their seeds. The Global Crop Diversity Trust pays for this.
Cary Fowler is a scientist who heads the Global Crop Diversity Trust. He said, "If the Seed Vault simply supplies seed banks with copies of seeds that those banks lost by accident, the Seed Vault will be worth more than it cost."
1.What is the purpose of building the seed banks
A.To research on seeds. B.To produce new seeds.
C.To protect crop diversity. D.To increase the number of seeds.
2.Compared with other seed banks, the global seed bank __________.
A.was built by the government B.is more welcomed by farmers
C.is mainly used by great scientists D.can provide a good environment for seeds
3.What can we learn about the Svalbard Global Seed Vault
A.It helps to pay the shipping cost. B.No one can take seeds out of there.
C.There are no fees to store seeds there. D.It mainly receives seeds from farmers.
4.What is Cary Fowler's attitude towards the Seed Vault
A.He feels it is very important. B.He is surprised at it.
C.He thinks it costs too much. D.He is uncertain about it.

Dannis was waiting at the airline ticket counter when he first noticed the young woman with shiny black hair pulled tightly into a knot. She wore black boots of soft leather. Dannis struggled to see her face, she was ahead of him in line, but it was not until she bought her ticket and turned to walk away that he realized her beauty, which was fair-skinned and big-eyed. She seemed aware that he was staring at her and lowered her gaze abruptly.
His flight was leaving in an hour. To kill time, Dannis stepped into an airport bar and ordered a Scotch. While sipping it, he watched the flow of travelers through the terminal (航站楼) until he caught sight of the black-haired girl again, deep in conversation with a blonde girl (金发女孩)."Invite her for a drink " Dannis hesitated. In another instant, the two women separated, neither of whose directions was toward him. When next he saw her, Dannis was buying a magazine and became aware someone was pushing him. At first, he was startled (受惊吓的) that anyone would be so close as to touch him, but when he saw who it was, he smiled.
"Busy place," Dannis said.
She looked up at him and blushed. Wordlessly, she moved away and joined the crowds in the terminal.
Dannis was at the counter with his magazine, but when he reached into his pocket for his wallet, the pocket was empty. Where could I have left it His mind was racing, the credit cards, the cash, the identification card... His stomach stirred with something very like fear. "The girl who was so near to me!" he said to himself. All at once he understood she had picked his pocket. What shall he do
First, find a policeman, tell him what has happened. He would probably never see his wallet again. Dannis gritted his teeth. When glancing around for the police, suddenly, he spotted the black-haired girl, seated against a front window of the terminal. She seemed absorbed in a book.

Dear Jim,
I am glad to know that you have joined your school's calligraphy club. The calligraphy piece sent to you was written by myself. I really hope you will like it.
The Chinese characters on the piece are "天道酬勤"(Tian Dao Chou Qin), meaning "Hard work pays off." It is a well-known Chinese idiom, widely adopted as a motto by Chinese people. I hope it can serve as an encouragement to you at all times. I wrote this piece in the calligraphic style of my favorite calligrapher, Yan Zhenqing, a renowned master of the Tang Dynasty. His style is kaishu, a standard script, suitable for beginners. I guess maybe it is the style that you are practising.
I know it is not easy to learn Chinese calligraphy. If you have any problems during your study, I would be happy to help you. I sincerely hope you enjoy learning Chinese calligraphy.
Yours,
Li Hua
