E. O. Wilson, “the Darwin of the 21st century”, is considered the world’s leading expert on ants and a pioneer of the theory of biodiversity.
Wilson was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1929. When he was young, he was crazy about the natural world and spent his childhood exploring woods and observing insects. When he was in high school, he narrowed his focus down to the study of insects. After earning his master’s degree in biology in the University of Alabama, he went to Harvard University to work for a PhD in 1951. After graduation, he remained there for his career as a teacher.
Wilson authored many books and was awarded quite a few prizes, such as the Crafoord Prize and the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. Wilson has a strong gift for storytelling and narrative. His books are easy to understand and can attract readers, even those who don’t care much for scientific topics. In his writings, Wilson further enlarged his study from biology to other subjects, such as sociobiology, geography and even art.
The friendship between the scientist Finch and Wilson is also worth mentioning. “On his 88th birthday he wanted to collect ants in the delta so we wandered through an Alabama woodland,” Finch recalled, “We also went to other areas like two boys getting into the woods.” After retiring from teaching in 1996, Wilson founded the E. In Flanders, the best advice to give a confused cyclist is: Keep calm and check your numbers. Many riders have a string of numbers with them, preprinted or handwritten on a piece of paper. The numbers are a roadmap to the route.
Nearly 220 miles of cycling paths go through the region in northern Belgium. Each path is numbered, and before setting out, cyclists can check an interactive map to create a sequence(排列顺序)that’s unique to their route. Arrows point riders in the right direction on their way across villages, forests, and fields. And as they ride, cyclists look at the blue signs and then their string of numbers to ensure they’re on the right track.
The network opened in 1990, after being proposed by Belgian mining engineer Hugo Bollen. In the early 20th century, the region experienced an economic boom(繁荣), particularly in the province of Limburg, which mined coal. But by the 1980s, those businesses started to close, and towns needed something else to restart their economic engines. Bollen came up with an idea to develop tourism by depending on another natural resource that was plentiful in the region: astonishing landscapes. He suggested a bike network—and because names of villages and towns could be hard to remember, he proposed a system based on numbers.
The routes are organized around themes designed to inspire and are not necessarily meant to be the most efficient path from one destination to another. These paths celebrate the journey and the scenic spots along the way. Cyclists can choose to ride through strawberry fields, for instance, or around a brewery(啤酒厂)known for its high quality beer. History lovers can choose paths that link up with various sites of historic battles from both World Wars, particularly near the border with France. Besides, there are still signs of the region’s mining heritage(遗产)across Limburg.
Over the years, the region’s tourism agency has added some new attractions along the route, while still highlighting nature and local ecosystems. Kate Vandy, a cyclist from the U.K., said “You’ll soon lose yourself in shades of green, and the white of apple flowers.”
8. How can cyclists avoid getting lost in Flanders
A. By staying clear of forests and fields.
B. By remembering the names of those villages.
C. By matching their numbers with the blue signs.
D. By following the one-way arrows along the route.
9. Why did Hugo Bollen propose the cycling network
A. To market mining products. B. To preserve rural landscapes.
C. To promote an active lifestyle. D. To rebuild the local economy.
10. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. Special features along the paths. B. The inspiration from the spots.
C. Major challenges for cyclists. D. The natural heritage of Belgium.
11. What do Kate Vandy’s words mean
A. It is easy to get lost in the route.

In 2015, the last golden eagle in England died at Haweswater in the Lake District National Park. Its death was the latest in a series of losses in the Lake District. In his book, Wild Fell, published by Doubleday on 24 February 2022. Haweswater Site Manager Lee Schofield calls on the local people to revive the landscape—telling the ups and downs of taking over the management of two hill farms in 2012 and how his team are combining ancient practices with new ambition so that farming and nature can develop well, and that one day eagles may surge once again.
In the Lake District, Lee and his team, working with landowner United Utilities, have changed a polluted river, restored wetlands, and equipped cows with GPS collars to protect endangered wildflowers. As well as helping wildlife, this is also good for people—there are twice as many people working at Haweswater than a decade ago, thousands of tons of carbon are being locked away in new woodlands and restored wetlands, and changing the river has added 180m to its length, slowing the flow of water and reducing flood risk. By restoring the habitats in the area, it will also finally help improve the water quality in the reservoir at Haweswater that provides water for more than two million people across North West England.
Lee says, “Change is possible, but we can’t depend on reserves as lifeboats for nature—we need a great transformation with people and wildlife at the heart of every decision made up and down this country. Wild Fell is not intended to be an instruction book, and there’s never a one-size-fits-all solution, but I hope it can serve as an example of what can happen when we work together to fight for our wildlife and our livelihoods.” Isabella Tree, author of The Return of Nature to a British Farm, says of Wild Fell, “It is an inspiring journey into the restoration of our lands. Reasoned, intelligent and well-informed, this is a story of hope and renewal for both nature and farming.”
12. What does the underlined word “surge” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Increase greatly. B. Hide safely.
C. Compete freely. D. Differ slightly.
13. What does the author introduce about Lee and his team in Paragraph 2
A. Their plans and principles. B. Their problems and solutions.
C. Their contributions and limitations. D. Their efforts and achievements.
14. What does Lee expect of Wild Fell
A. It will be an instruction book.
B. It will inspire more people to fight for nature.
C. It will provide an example of building reserves.
D. It will change the way of linking people with wildlife.
15. What is Isabella Tree’s attitude to Wild Fell
A. Doubtful B. Negative. C. Favorable. D. Unconcerned.

He smiled and got an idea.
Entering the florist, Mark smiled broadly, “Can you arrange to have flowers delivered in Syracuse, N.Y. It’s my mother’s 65th birthday and I wanted to send her some flowers.” Mark explained.
The florist said, “Of course, I just need your mother’s name and address, and I guess you want to send a note, a birthday message ”
“Yes,” said Mark, and he quickly recited his mother’s name and address and then added, “Please write: Happy birthday to the best mom in the world, love you and miss you. Your son, Mark.”
Mark was walking out with a feeling of accomplishment when he saw a girl sitting on the corner with tears running down her face. Mark squatted down(蹲下来)next to her and asked, “Hey dear, are you OK ”
“I’m Mandy and I wanted a rose for my mom,” the girl wept.
“But I don’t have enough money! The flower lady said I could only buy a daisy, but my mom loves red roses.”
“You just wait here,” Mark said, and then he walked back into the florist and bought a lovely red rose for Mandy. “Here you go,”he said, placing the rose in her hands. E.
O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation to promote worldwide understanding of the importance of biodiversity. “He’s still writing,” said Finch. “He always tells me,” This is my last book. “But he actually told me that six books ago.”

C Major challenges for cyclists. D. The natural heritage of Belgium.
11. What do Kate Vandy’s words mean
A. It is easy to get lost in the route.
B. It is enjoyable to cycle in the route.
C. You will feel confused during the journey.
D. There are too many trees and flowers there.

C Compete freely.
C It will provide an example of building reserves.
D. It will change the way of linking people with wildlife.
15. What is Isabella Tree’s attitude to Wild Fell
A. Doubtful B. Negative. C. Favorable. D. Unconcerned.

Mark Mancuso’s phone rang. He looked at it. It was a calendar alert, telling him it was his mother’s birthday. His mother Amelia lived 200 miles away, a bit of a drive, but Mark had driven further for a lunch with a friend. He just couldn’t stand his mother’s complaints. Then he found a florist(花店).
Mandy took the rose in her hands, smiled up at Mark and said,“Thank you! But could you take me to my mom It’s not far but I’m not supposed to go on my own.”
Mark nodded. Mandy took his hand and walked with him down the street. After a while, Mandy turned right and Mark was surprised to see they were standing by the gates of a cemetery(墓地).
