When Stephanie, my best friend, told me that she wanted to run a marathon (马拉松) and needed my help, I tried to talk her out of it. “You hate running. Marathon training is terrible and takes over your life. It’s running all the time,” I argued.
I couldn’t change her mind. So I told her that she should at least do it right: choose a right race and I’d run with her. Finally, we chose the Honolulu Marathon. It took place in Hawaii, a beautiful place. It’s one of the 10 largest marathons in the world, with nearly 22,000 finishers each year. But more importantly, a full 35 percent of them are first-timers. And Honolulu’s course has no cut-off, staying open until the last runner finishes. The race seemed perfect for green runners like Stephanie.
Although I have run plenty of my own races, I was surprised by the amount of pressure I felt in this one. Being in charge of your own race is one thing. Being the boss of someone else is another. It was my job to encourage her and make decisions for her while she came across difficulties and wanted to give up during the race. I felt a huge responsibility that her dream of running across the finish line was in my hands.
The Honolulu Marathon day proved to be hot and sunny. The temperature hit 82 degrees Fahrenheit. The sun was strong; shade (树荫) was little and far between. After running for more than four hours, Stephanie was showing signs of heat exhaustion (中暑). I told her to walk until I was sure it was safe for her to keep running again.
Soon, the finish line was in sight and as we crossed the line, we hugged, and tears flowed. I knew why Stephanie was crying. It’s amazing when you complete something you never thought possible.
4. What was the author’s attitude towards Stephanie’s running a marathon at first
A. Negative. B. Excited.
C. Annoyed. D. Supportive.
5. Why did the author and Stephanie choose to run the Honolulu Marathon
A. They were familiar with the place.
B. The race was suitable for beginners.
C. They wanted to enjoy the beautiful views there.
D. The race was popular among marathon runners.
6. What possibly made the author feel stressed
A. Her decision to turn down her friend.
B. The strong competition from other runners.
C. The bad performance of Stephanie in training.
D. Her duty to support Stephanie in finishing her race.
7. What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 4
A. The author’s skill in completing a marathon.
B. The success of Stephanie’s first marathon race.
C. The difficulty in running a marathon for Stephanie.
D. The importance of taking a rest during a tough marathon.

Most sun bears have short, black hair, though some are more reddish or grayer in color. Most of these bears have a V-shaped area of light hair under their necks, which is different in color from cream to yellowish-brown. These bears don’t get their name because they love to work with this color of hair. Nor are they called sun bears because of their sunny disposition (性情). Instead, their name comes from the V-shaped part under their necks, which is commonly yellowish in color. The part looks a bit like a rising sun.
Of all the kinds of bears, sun bears are the smallest. They measure just 47 to 59 inches long. Though small, they have a very long tongue, which measures 8 to 10 inches long. Why such a long tongue Long tongues are particularly useful when they are trying to reach the food deep down in a piece of wood or catching other insects (昆虫), or when they are trying to clean every bit of honey they have found.
Sun bears are very dependent upon feeding on bees and honey. Insects make up a large part of their diet, and they commonly feed on ants and young insects. Fruits and nuts also make up a part of some meals, and they are particularly fond of figs (a soft sweet fruit). In some areas, fruits make up nearly half of the bears’ diet. When given the opportunity, they will also hunt birds, turtles, eggs, and deer for food.
Unlike some other bear species, sun bears are active all year round. Food can be found all the time in rain forests, so they don’t need to fell into a deep sleep to spend the whole winter. Sadly, today people cut down rain forests for wood, or to make room for agricultural (农业的) development, reducing the number of living places suitable for sun bears. At the same time, some people hunt the bears to sell their coats and other body parts on the black market.
8. Why were sun bears given such a name
A. They are friendly and lovely.
B. They love doing something in the sun.
C. Some of their hair feels as warm as the sun.
D. Part of their hair looks like the sun in color and shape.
9. What can be learned about the tongue of sun bears
A. It’s mainly used to break down food.
B. It is the smallest of all kinds of bears’.
C. It greatly helps them search for food.
D. It reaches half of their body in length.
10. What’s the feature of sun bears’ eating habits
A. They tend to waste food.
B. They feed on various things.
C. They prefer fruits to other things.
D. They like catching insects for young bears.
11. What can we conclude about sun bears from the last paragraph
A. Humans often fail to find them in winter.
B. They are less seen on the black market now.
C. They are good at storing food for the winter.
D. Human activities have become a big danger to them.
D
Our teenagers are lonely. A new study by Harvard’s Making Caring Common (MCC) shows just how that reeling has been common and become serious during the past year when we had to keep the social distance. One year’s online learning and life in the bedrooms rather than the classrooms or dorm rooms can make teenagers feel lonelier than before. Teenagers have been more likely to be influenced by loneliness than older adults.
Experiencing loneliness is certainly sad, but it is also perilous. Researchers found that 63% of the young were suffering from bad sleep, anxiety, and poor health during the lockdown (活动限制) and that nearly a quarter had started or increased some bad habits, including smoking, drinking, and staying up late to deal with their feelings.
About half of the young people in the study, who said they had felt lonely, explained that over the past weeks not one person had taken more than just a few minutes to ask how they had been lately. It made them feel they had no one who really cared about them. Their parents thought they had much free time after lessons and it seemed that they only worried whether their children could perform their schoolwork at the level they once did. They didn’t know the problem.
Sian Leah Beilock, the president of Barnard College, explains that young people depend on social media, which makes them especially weak to social media’s harms. She also suggests that fewer close friends may explain some of the feelings of loneliness. She reports that in 1985 the average American had three close friends with whom they could share important things about their lives. In 2004, that number had dropped to just two friends. And in 2019, one in five millennials (千禧一代) had no friends at all.
These levels of loneliness are heartbreaking. MCC suggests, as a nation, we first should focus on teaching the young to make meaningful connections between people and support them.
12. What does the underlined word “perilous” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Dangerous. B. Funny.
C. Helpful. D. Uncommon.
13. What do the young people’s words in the study mean
A. Their parents misunderstood them.
B. They found their school work heavy.
C. They needed more care and attention.
D. Their online courses made them bored.
14. Which of the following may Sian Leah Beilock agree with
A. Teenagers are short of outdoor exercise.
B. Teenagers should make more close friends in real life.
C. Teenagers enjoy developing close relationships online.
D. Teenagers should avoid sharing important things online.
15. What can be the suitable title for the text
A. How to understand loneliness
B. MCC is improving teenagers’ development
C. The US teenagers are experiencing loneliness
D. How to carry out online education for teenagers

You may have many old books that you no longer want. There’s no reason to allow them to gather when others might be able to find a good use for them. 16
When you’re deciding what to do with old books, check their condition first. Check whether a book has all of its pages, whether the cover is coming off, and whether the pages are dirty. 17 It could also be given away to a charity (慈善机构).
If you plan to bring old books to a bookstore, remember to check the books’ content (内容) too. 18 For example, storybooks usually catch bookstore owners’ eye while travel guides don’t. Bring books like storybooks to a bookstore, and you’ll have a bigger chance of having them sold.
If you choose to give old books to a charity, avoid giving books that are in poor condition.
19 Do not force the charity to reach the same decision as yours and crowd their recycling boxes. It’s because if a book is quite dirty or damaged (被损坏的), a charity cannot sell it or give it out.
20 Choose some interesting old books and encourage your friends to take them and leave some books of their own. You could also have a book party, where every visitor brings old books for the others to look through and pick.
A. It’s also a great idea to sell old books online.
B. So work out ways to deal with the old books.
C. Book buyers know what they can find in the store.
D. After all, some topics are of more interest than others.
E. If the book is in good shape, sell it to a used bookstore.

I and the other fifty girls sat on the chairs in the gym of my middle school. We waited there for the coach to give the results of the competition for roles as cheerleaders (啦啦队队员). One by one, each girl left her scat, jumping up and down as their number was called out. “Will I be one of them ” I wondered. I was getting more nervous, and each second felt like a century.
“Number seventeen,” the coach called out. Hearing it, I jumped right away from my seat. And I ran over to stand next to the girls who had been chosen to be cheerleaders. We smiled and hugged each other because we became members of the 10-girl cheerleading team.
During the following days, I and the other nine cheerleaders practiced for the performance. We were dressed in our blue uniforms before the upcoming sports meet. It was going to be held on a Friday morning. However, the night before the sports meet, I got very nervous, and worried what if I made a mess in the performance. I tried to comfort myself, “You can make it. Just calm down and relax.” The next morning, my parents left home for work and I hurried to go to school.
Unluckily, when I arrived at school, I found the other nine cheerleaders were all in their white uniforms. But I was still in my blue uniform. At once I realized I had made a mistake: wearing the wrong uniform. There was not much time left before the cheerleading performance started. What should I do Both my team members and the coach were worried. Then a cheerleader called Tammy offered to help me. She said, “My home is quite close to our school. Maybe I could give my mother a call. She is at home now. She could drive Jane to her home, so Jane can change her uniform quickly.”
Paragraph 1:
The coach allowed Tammy to give it a try.
