Nearly a year ago, on a sunny July day, I drove to a nearby lake with my family and friends to have a picnic. I couldn’t wait to get in the water because I loved swimming. “Here I go,” I shouted, laughing, as I dove (跳水) from a boat dock into the lake. That was the last thing I remember. I was unconscious and pulled from the water with a severed spine (脊柱断裂), and paralyzed from the waist down.
After months of hospitalization, I was finally home. But things weren’t going well. I had to face many lifestyle changes. The gray sky outside my window matched how I felt inside. I sighed and turned away. Life had lost all meaning. I was impatient with myself as well as my family.
A few days later, I poured out my despondency to Jerry, a good friend of mine. “I don’t feel like I have a reason to get out of bed,” I told him. Jerry was quiet with his eyes focused on my mulberry tree. “Look,” he whispered. “There’s a cardinal (a kind of bird).” I saw it on that lower branch to the right. Cheer, cheer, cheer, the cardinal sang in a sweet voice. I’d seen cardinals before. Now as I studied this one, I realized I’d never really seen a cardinal. It was beautiful.
As I watched the elegant bird, something clicked (茅塞顿开). The hope of life, like a light, was awakened inside me. After Jerry left, I wheeled to the front of the house, smiled at the sky and felt relieved.
I now take bird watching as my new hobby. I record interesting sightings in my diary and photograph every bird I meet. Besides, I feel a new kind of pleasure when taking care of the potted plants in my yard. Of course, I still face many difficulties every day, but when I look out of my window, I see birds. And when I see birds, I see miracles (奇迹). And I’ve found my place among them.
4. What happened to the author about a year ago
A. He fell off his boat.
B. He had a car accident.
C. He injured his spine in a dive.
D. He hardly got along with his family.
5. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “despondency” in Paragraph 3
A. Doubts. B. Expectations.
B. Nervousness. D. Discouragement.
6. How did the author feel after seeing the cardinal outside his window
A. Indifferent. B. Shocked.
C. Pleased. D. Puzzled.
7. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph
A. He decides to raise birds himself.
B. He becomes hopeful about his life.
C. He determines to be a bird photographer.
D. He can deal with difficulties all by himself.

Edward O. Wilson’s Letters to a Young Scientist is part of a memoir (回忆录) and part of an advice column for young scientists. During his long and highly successful career, Wilson has advised numerous doctoral students and helped them launch their careers. Along the way, he has developed a strong sense of what it takes to be successful in the field of science. He builds his book around a more fundamental and timeless career question: What makes a good scientist
As Wilson works toward an answer, he backs up his arguments with first-hand evidence. It is obvious that he deeply appreciates the creativity of the scientific process. In his first few chapters, he encourages readers to daydream, work hard and mess around. Wilson relates several examples of “messing around” in his own career. Some led to major discoveries while others led to nothing at all However, quick and uncontrolled experiments open the potential for major discoveries.
I find Wilson’s writings on the importance of failure especially affecting. Most young scientists are not prepared for the level and number of setbacks they are likely to come across in their early careers. As scientific funding has been cut and tenure-track (终身的) jobs have grown rare, today’s young scientists will be refused more than scientists of equal quality in the past century. “Be prepared mentally for some amount of failure. Waste and frustration often attend the earliest stages,” Wilson writes.
Wilson also suggests, “A strong work virtue is absolutely essential. There must be an ability to pass long hours in study and research with pleasure even though some of the effort will unavoidably lead to dead ends.” The time that is seemingly wasted may later prove to have been well spent. Wilson insists that the process of exploring and gaining closeness with one’s studies — even the ones that don’t go as planned — is essential to the creative process of a scientist.
8. What is Letters to a Young Scientist mainly about
A. Wilson’s achievements.
B. Records of Wilson’s private life.
C. Practical suggestions for scientists.
D. Methods for scientists’ finding desirable jobs.
9. Wilson values creative scientific experiments mainly because ___________.
A. they make it possible to achieve great success
B. they make it easy to get first-hand experience
C. they can lead to final findings rapidly
D. they can be controlled at will
10. What’s the current situation of young scientists
A. They are more afraid of suffering failures.
B. They may face even greater challenges at work.
C. They are more knowledgeable and better educated.
D. They can take advantage of more scientific resources.
11. What’s Wilson’s advice for young scientists
A. To avoid academic dead ends.
B. To develop critical thinking.
C. To stay positive patiently.
D. To make a schedule.
D
The dialect (方言) regions of the United arc most clearly marked along the Atlantic coast, where the earlier settlements (定居地) were created. There dialects can be defined: Northern, Midland, and Southern.
To some extent these regions save the traditional speech of southeastern and southern England, where most of the early colonists were born. The first settlers that arrived in Virginia (1607) and Massachusetts (1620) soon learned to adapt old words to new uses, but they were also pleased to borrow names from the local Indian languages for unknown trees, such as hickory and persimmon trees, and for unfamiliar animals, such as raccoons and woodchucks. Later they took words from other foreign settlers — the French and the Dutch.
Before the Declaration of Independence (1776), two-thirds of the immigrants (移民) had come from England, but after that date immigrants from Ireland arrived in large numbers. The Great Hunger of 1845-1852 drove 1.5 million Irish to seek homes in the New World, and the European Revolutions of 1848 drove as many Germans to settle in Pennsylvania and the Midwest. After the close of the American Civil War in 1865, millions of Scandinavians, Slavs, and Italians crossed the ocean and eventually settled mostly in the North Central and Upper Midwest states. In some areas of South Carolina and Georgia, Africans working on rice and cotton plantations developed a language called Gullah, which made use of many structural and vocabulary features of their native languages.
The speech of the Atlantic Seaboard shows far greater differences in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary than that of any area in the North Central states, the Upper Midwest, the Rocky Mountains, or the Pacific Coast. Today, urbanization, quick transport, and television have decreased some dialectal differences in the United States. On the other hand, immigrant groups have introduced new varieties in which the influence of their native languages is evident, and some immigrant languages are widely spoken.
12. Why did the first settlers borrow local Indian words
A. To communicate with the locals.
B. To enrich their own languages.
C. To deepen their friendships with Indians.
D. To learn about Indians’ traditional culture.
13. What was the characteristic of Gullah
A. It borrowed plenty of words from English.
B. It was based on Africans’ native languages.
C. It had rich words to describe farming practices.
D. It was mainly spoken in the North Central stales.
14. Which of the following reduces dialectal differences in the United States
A. Convenient transportation.
B. Widespread use of the Internet.
C. The growth of nationwide population.
D. The rise of people’s educational level.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. The origin of dialects in the US.
B. America’s immigration history.
C. The attractiveness of the United States.
D. The importance of cross-cultural communication.

I began to lose hope. It seemed that there was little chance that my great-grandmother was able to heal (康复). My blind, 94-year-old great-grandmother was sleeping soundly in the hospital bed. As l sat quietly with my family, l listened to the sounds of the machines that kept her alive. Her face was pale and empty. She was no longer the cheerful person I had always known.
It seemed that every day she got worse. She might not make it through Christmas. I tried to think of a present to give to her. Since she was blind, I would have to get her a gift that she didn’t have to see to appreciate, but that she could feel with her hands. I remembered that when she lived with us she always wanted to touch and play with my stuffed animals (填充动物玩具). Her favorites were my unique stuffed bears.
I knew right then what to get. She always wanted one for herself! I would have a teddy bear made especially for her. “Great-grandma’s Bear” is what I named the brown, stuffed animal — “Bear” for short. The bear was quite charming with his tiny black button nose and big chocolate eyes. I looked forward to visiting my great-grandmother on Christmas morning and seeing the look on her face when I gave Bear to her. The clay came more quickly than I thought. I carried Bear in my arms as I walked to Room 208 with my family.
There was my great-grandmother, sitting in her bed. Her eyes were wide open. I think she was sensing that we were coming. A smile grew on her face as we sat on her bed, close to her weak body hidden under the covers. “Merry Christmas!” my dad said. We talked with my great-grandmother for a while until it was time to give her the gifts we had brought. My mother gave her fresh-smelling baby powder because she could never have enough of it. My father brought her favorite candies. Now it was my turn.
Paragraph 1:
I placed the bear in her gentle, skinny hands.
_______________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2:
From that day on, amazingly, my great-grandmother started to heal.

Paragraph 1:
I placed the bear in her gentle, skinny hands. Once her hands touched it, her face was suddenly filled with joy. The last time I had seen she was so happy was many months earlier. She smiled and hugged Bear the whole time we were there. She loved Bear very much, and she didn’t want anyone to take Bear from her because she feared they’d lose it. Before we left, she thanked me many times. She said that Bear would never leave her side.
Paragraph 2:
From that day on, amazingly, my great-grandmother started to heal. Days later, she moved back into the nursing home where she had lived before she was sent to the hospital. She slept with Bear every night and never forgot it. One day when I visited the nursing home, the nurse said my great-grandmother was taking good care of Bear. I replied, “No, it is taking good care of her.” My great-grandmother’s health improved because of Bear. Bear was the perfect gift. Several years later, my great-grandmother passed away peacefully in her sleep, still hugging Bear.
