Length of Time: 40 minutes
Grade:Grade Seven
Teaching material:
The topic of Unit 8 of Oxford English 7A is Collecting things. In the reading lesson, students will read a story about collections. Students are familiar with this kind of the topic and are interested in it. The training of reading strategies for this period are focused on understanding illustrations, scanning, skimming and predicting.
The students:
Most of the students are good at English. Their listening, speaking, reading and writing capacity are comparatively better than the average level. Most of the students have many different hobbies and some of them are also good at dancing, playing the piano or playing other instruments. They are active in taking part in activities in class and getting involved with group work.
Teaching methods:
Task-based learning method, Students’ cooperation approach and Communicative approach

Ability objectives:
1)To foster the students’ good habit of reading articles and improve their reading sub-skills including scanning, skimming and predicting some meanings of words according to the contexts.
2)To learn to ask and answer about collections.
Moral objective:
Students will enjoy fun time in life and be aware of keeping balance between his hobbies and studies.

Teaching procedure:
Steps Teacher’s activity Students’ activity Designing purpose
Greeting( 1min) The teacher introduces her own collection. Listen to the teacher’s introduction about her own collection. Introduce a kind of collection to the students.
Lead-in(2mins) To get the students to talk about their own collections. Follow the example above and talk about students’ own collections. To arouse the students’ interest, and get ready to read the text.
Pre-reading(4mins) Ask Ss to read the title and the picture in the book and teach some new words and expressions. Read the title and picture in the book and predict the main idea of the passage and What things the grandparents have collected. Learn some new words and expressions. To train the students’ understanding illustrations and also learn some new words and expressions in contexts.
While-Reading (14m)(1) First-reading(2mins) To guide Ss to skim the passage. Read the passage quickly and answer the question: What unusual collections are mentioned(提及) in the passage. To train the students’ ability of skimming the article.
(2)Second-reading (5mins) To guide Ss to do some exercises to get more detail information.who started collecting doorbells Why does she collect doorbells Who likes collecting newspaper What is Grandpa’s advice(建议) on collections? Read the passage carefully and finish the exercises. To train the students’ ability of scanning for more detail information.

Post-reading (17mins):(1)Practice 1(7mins) The teacher read the text for the whole class first, and then organize the students to read the text in roles.Explain some useful sentences in the text. Listen to the teacher carefully and read the text in roles. Consolidate the new words and expressions learned just now.
(2)Practice 2 (10mins) Ask Ss to talk about their “collections” with others in an auction fair. Ask and answer about collections in pairs. Improve students’ ability of talking about collections and also prepare for subsequent writing task of this unit.
5.Summary (2min) Sum up.Give a writing assignment. Write a short passage about students’ own collections. Output.
