This illness causes (极严重的) dehydration, and even death.
As a young doctor, John Snow became (沮丧的) because no one knew how to prevent or treat cholera.
However, he never lost his desire to destroy cholera (最终地;彻底地).
In general, doctors in those days had two (矛盾的) theories to explain how cholera spread.
Another was that cholera was caused by an (感染;传染) from (细菌) in food or water.
Snow (赞同) the second theory. It was correct, but he still needed (证据).
There were (数量多的) deaths near the water (泵) in Broad Street. However, some (家庭;一家人) had had no deaths.
Snow (怀疑) that the water pump was to (责怪).
Accordingly, he had the (把手) of the pump removed so that it could not be used. Through this (干预;介入), the disease was stopped in its tracks.
Snow was later able to show a (联系) between other cases of cholera and the different water companies. Some companies sold water from the River Thames that was polluted by (未经处理的;生的) waste. The people who drank this water were much more likely to get cholera than those who drank (纯的) or boiled water
Through Snow’s tireless efforts, the threat of cholera around the world saw a (大量的) (减少;降低).
Fortunately, we now know how to prevent cholera, (幸亏) the work of John Snow.
Moreover, in his use of maps and (统计学), Snow (使改变) the way scientists study diseases.

He used his great influence to change the (思想) of the scientific community on this issue.
It blocks a key (蛋白质) in the body’s (细胞) that is to blame for the spread of (病毒).

Stephen Hawking was one of the most famous and (有天赋的) scientists in physics.
Since he (患病) with a disease, his world became one of (抽象的) thought.
The first was the (稳定的) state theory, which holds that the universe has no beginning or end.
The biggest champion of the steady state (概念) was a professor at Cambridge.
Hawking’s own work on the big bang theory was soon proven by (天文学家) with (望远镜).
