I. Analysis of the teaching material
The topic of this unit is about“legends and stories”. It helps students learn how to tell a story. This is the second period of this unit. It mainly trains students’ reading ability. By studying this class, the students will read a passage about Sun Wukong. Students are expected to understand the meaning of the passage clearly and finish the tasks by skimming and scanning.
II.Analysis of the students
Before this unit, students have learned how to talk about the past events and tell a story in Unit 5. In this class,students are familiar with Journey to the West and love the Monkey King very much,so it is not difficult for them to understand this passage.But due to their previous thinking ability and language competence are limited, and some students still have trouble reading and understanding the passage, so they might become less talkative in class.
III.Teaching objectives
According to the new curriculum standards and core competence of English subject, my teaching aims are as follows: Language ability: Be able to learn and use the new words and phrases: turn...into,object,hide, tail, magic,stick,excite, Western. Learning competence: 1.Be able to get the main idea and the specific information from the article by fast reading and careful reading. 2.Be able to retell the passage with the help of the mind map using the conjunctions(as soon as, so...that..., unless) and key phrases. Thinking quality: Be able to give opinions about the Monkey King and think about what they can learn from him. Cultural awareness: To encourage the students to learn from the Monkey King’ spirits and never give up in the face of the difficulties.
IV. Key Points and Difficult Points
Key points To let the students understand the meaning of the passage and to improve the students’ reading ability. Difficult Points To lead the students to retell the passage with the help of some conjunction words: as soon as, so...that..., unless.

Step 1 Greetings Students and the teacher greet each other . [The purpose is to to get ready for class.] Step 2 Warming-up Students watch a video about Journey to the West . [The purpose is to activate students’ prior knowledge and learning interests .] Step 3 Reading 1.Pre-reading Students look at the picture and guess the main idea of this passage. [The purpose is to train the students’ abilities of predicting .] 2.While-reading 1)Fast reading Students read the passage quickly , match the main idea with each paragraph . [The purpose is to help the students get an over-all understanding of the article .] 2)Careful reading Students read each paragraph carefully and finish the following tasks. ①What happened in November 1979 Who is the main character in Journey to the West ②Students read the article carefully to find out what the Monkey King is like. ③Students find out what the Monkey King can and can’t do to complete the chart in 3b. ④Why are children interested in reading about the Monkey King ⑤Judge the sentences TRUE or FALSE according to the passage. [The purpose is to train the students’ abilities of getting the specific information and thinking quality.] 3). Post-reading ①Students finish 3c. ②Students try to finish the mind map and retell the passage with the help of it. ③Further thinking: What is the Monkey King like What do you think about him What would you do if you have a magic stick like the Monkey King What can you learn from the Monkey King [The purpose is to make the students grasp the main idea of the passage ,train their thinking quality and comprehensive language ability.] Step 4 Summary Students summarize what they’ve learned in this class. [The purpose is to let the students have a better review of this lesson .] Step 5 Homework Students choose one task to complete. Group A:Retell the passage with the help of the mind map or 4b. Group B:Memorize the new words and target language you like in the passage. [The purpose is to consolidate and expend what they’ve learnt in this period .]
