Smoking in your own home in Thailand may now be considered a crime,if the smoke is considered harmful to other people in the house.
The new law,Family Protection and Development Promotion Act,aiming at controlling smoking at home which might be hazardous for others’ health living under the same roof, was initiated by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and was announced in the Royal Gazette on May 22,2019.It came into force on August 20.
According to the centre for research and knowledge management for tobacco control,at the Faculty of Medical Science of Mahidol University, there are about 4.9 million households where one or more family members smoke. An average of 10.3 million people have unwittingly(不知不觉地) become passive smokers because they’ve been breathing smoke at home.Scientific studies show that passive smokers are at greater risk of being affected by cancer.Of 75 child patients from houses where smoking is practiced,76% of them were found to have nicotine traces in their urine(尿液),with 43% of them having nicotine content exceeding(超过) permissible levels.
Smoking at home also “may lead to physical or emotional violence” because of aggressiveness when there is a lack of smoking, and might as well ruin relationships between smokers and non-smoker family members.
According to the new law, anyone who thinks they are affected by domestic smoking can report to government departments concerned so that officials will be sent to investigate and take legal action against the smokers.Once convicted(证明有罪的),the court may order a person to receive treatment to quit smoking in an attempt to protect the person’s family.

Born in Chengdu,Southwest China’s Sichuan Province,to a Canadian missionary family in 1915,Crook came into the world. While Isabel Crook’s parents were engaged in setting up schools and education institutions in Southwest China,Crook herself was more interested in anthropology(人类学) and the ethnic minority groups in China. She was very curious about what was going on around her.
At the age of 23,Crook graduated from a Canadian college with a master’s degree and began carrying out field research in Li County of Sichuan Province. In 1947,Crook and her journalist husband were warmly welcomed by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to observe and study the revolutionary land reform taking place in China. In 1948 the couple accepted an invitation from CPC leaders to teach at a newly-built foreign affairs school. The school was the forerunner of today’s Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU),which has seen over 400 ambassadors(大使) and 1,000 counsellors walk through its doors. As a teacher at BFSU she laid the foundations for foreign language education in China.
As two of the first three foreign teachers at the school,Isabel and David Crook brought new Western teaching methodologies to the classroom.Michael Crook noted that since some students were extremely poor during the 1950s and 1960s,his parents were especially sensitive to their situation and did what they could to help them while protecting their self-esteem.For example, they would bring food such as eggs and bread for picnics and share them with students who brought steamed corn bread.
According to the younger Crook, because of his parents’ belief in communism, they chose to use political texts as their teaching materials, such as works once admired by Karl Marx.Understanding that the students would become diplomats representing the People’s Republic of China, his parents tried to help students gain knowledge in different fields to better prepare them for communicating with foreigners in English.
On December 15th 2018,Isabel got the award of “the Most Influential Foreigner throughout 40 Years of China’s Development” from the Chinese government. On September 17, 2019,Isabel was awarded “the Friendship Medal” by the Chinese government for her lifetime of devotion to China.
25.What did Isabel Crook independently do

B.Performing field research.
C.Helping the poor students.
D.Introducing new Western teaching ways to China.
26.Why did his parents use political texts as teaching materials according to the younger Crook
A.They themselves were crazy about Chinese politics.
B.They wanted to spread the spirits of Karl Marx.
C.They had to teach many objects including politics.
D.They believed in communism and wanted to prepare students for overall development.
27.What can we infer from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3
A.In the 1950s,Crook’s husband worked as a reporter in China.
B.Isabel and her husband taught students only in Western teaching methods.
C.Isabel Crook made great contributions to China’s foreign language education.
D.Isabel Crook and her husband were very rich at that time.
28.Which of the following can best describe Isabel Crook

There’s a lot we know about eggs:they are great for breakfast and you can cook them in different ways. One topic of debate, however,is why brown chicken eggs usually cost more than white ones.According to Sharman Hickman, the director of Community Outreach and Education for Hickman’s Family Farms, genetics (基因学) not nutrition determines the eggshell colour and thus the egg’s price.
The chicken breed (品种) and their genetics decide whether or not hens have pigment (色素) genes, which coat the egg and result in a coloured shell during the egg-laying process.Although all eggs start out white in colour, shell colour can range from white to brown and even blue in some rare breeds,Hickman adds.Breeds such as the Leghorn chicken lays white eggs, while the Orpington lays brown eggs and the Ameraucana produces blue eggs.
Hickman notes that the Leghorn breed is the most efficient egg-laying hen, making it a popular choice for farmers.Hens that produce coloured eggshells, however, tend to be larger and require more feed and energy to create that painted layer.Since those breeds cost more to feed, their eggs are more expensive.
Although eggs sometimes look different and are priced differently,it’s impossible to know their nutritional make-up from the shell colour alone, according to Malina Linkas Malkani, media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.“Choosing between brown and white eggs is a matter of personal preference,” she says.“But it’s important for people to know that the colour of the eggshell has nothing to do with the egg’s nutrient content or shell thickness.”
What does affect the nutrient content is the specific diet the hen is on,according to Malkani. For example, hens fed with a diet with omega-3s and vitamin D produce eggs that are higher in those specific nutrients. No matter what your preference is,don’t judge an egg by its shell colour.
29.What makes the eggshell colour different
A.The hen’s breed.
B.The size of the hen.
C.The colour of the eggs inside.
D.The length of the laying process.
30.Why do farmers love the Leghorn breed more
A.They lay brown eggs.
B.Their eggs are larger.
C.Their eggs sell better.
D.They are productive.
31.What can we learn from Malkani’s words in the last paragraph
A.It takes efforts to test eggs’ nutrition.
B.It’s meaningless to study an egg’s colour.
C.Personal preference matters a lot in choice-making.
D.An egg’s nutrition is closely related to the hen’s feed.
32.Which of the following is one of the arguments about eggs
A.Which eggs are difficult to break.
B.How eggs can be cooked healthily.
C.Why coloured eggs are more expensive.
D.What the best time to eat eggs should be.

36 .When we meet with something we’re not familiar with or something frightening, our brain and body start making changes to help prepare us for the unknown.Dr.Kerr says,“For some people, choosing to be scared can be fun.”
What good is fear
37 .It tells a person to hide, run away,or defend oneself.Faster heartbeat and breathing send more blood and oxygen to the muscles so they are ready when they are needed.Stress chemicals can make a person more alert.
Our memories also help protect us.We keep a close eye on babies because they don’t understand what might hurt them.As babies grow, they learn what’s unsafe, and their brains store those memories. Then their brains use fear to warn them of dangers.“We don’t want to be fearless,”Dr.Kerr says.“ 38 !”
Too much can be harmful
Experiences can lead to long-lasting fears that may stop a person from trying new things. We’re born with the ability to feel fear, but a lot of what we’re afraid of is learned.
“Being afraid doesn’t mean you’re weak,” Dr.Kerr says.A long-lasting fear can mean you’ve had a bad experience, and your brain doesn’t want you to have it again. 39 .Other people may have no special fear of dogs but may be afraid of other things, such as heights, snakes,or spiders.
How to feel less afraid
Many people have beat their own fears. Here is one method:Instead of listening to their imagination, they learn the facts about anything that seems scary. 40 .
Dr.Kerr grew up on a farm.As a seven-year-old,she was scared of black bears in the woods.Later, she read about them.“ Understanding the facts gave me a sense of confidence,”she says.“I knew for sure what to do if I ever met with a bear and how to protect myself.”
A.Knowledge can help a person feel less afraid
B.Being scared is not always a bad thing
C.Fear is a tool that brain uses to keep the body safe
D.That is why our brain works faster in time of danger
E.It is good to have a healthy sense of what’s dangerous

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I wouldn’t have achieved any success in writing without my grandma and my husband’s encouragement.
The summer I turned 11 I spent two weeks with my grandparents. There were no other kids in the neighbourhood.I was afraid I would die of boredom.I missed my friends back in my hometown, and missed riding my bike everywhere.I even missed my brother and sister.
One afternoon Grandma was in the kitchen.“When’s Grandpa coming home ” I asked.Maybe he’d take us for a ride out.
“He’s out of town for a meeting and won’t be home till tomorrow.” She opened the door and the heat came out.
“I’m bored,” I said.“There’s nothing to do here.”
“Oh,there’s plenty to do,” she said.“You just have to use your imagination.”
Oh,I had an imagination all right. At night I’d call to Grandma from the guest room, terrified that I heard a noise in the closet or saw a face at the window.“There’s no one here but us,” Grandma would say, rubbing my back until I fell asleep.
It’s too bad that imagination deserted me in the daytime.“I can’t think of anything,” I said.
“How about a little trip ” she asked.
We walked along the brick sidewalks. We crossed the street.I saw the movie theatre. My heart began to race.I loved movies! But,no,Grandma walked right past the theatre.“Here we are,” she said, stopping in front of a store.“I thought you might like to go to Switzerland.”
“But this is a bookstore,” I said.Had the heat gone to Grandma’s head
She pushed open the glass door, nodded to the sales clerk and walked to the children’s section. Her fingers danced along the covers of the books until they came to a thick volume bound in brown cloth. She pulled it off the shelf and handed it to me.
“Here you go.It’s one ticket to the snow-covered Alps,Switzerland.”
I looked at the title.“Heidi ” I’d never heard of it.“Is it any good ”
“There’s only one way to find out. It’s about a girl who goes to stay with her grandfather (like you)!”

My wife and I go to the theater whenever we can.But before we buy tickets,we like to know whether the play is good or bad. When a new play opens,we usually surf the Internet to get information about it.
Last week a new play opened at the theater. The brief introduction on the poster said it was very exciting,so we decided to go on Saturday night. My wife took a long time to make up her mind what to wear and we left our house a little late.By the time we drove to the theater, the first act had already begun. We were sorry we missed part of the play, because the rest of it was very funny. The poster had been right. It was very good.
After the play was over,we met a friend we hadn’t seen for a long time on the way to the restaurant. He wanted to go to a nightclub. It had been many years since my wife and I had gone dancing, but I finally agreed.By the time we got home,it was about two o’clock in the morning.I’m not accustomed to staying out so late and I was extremely tired.
When I was younger,I didn’t have the money to go out for an evening like this. Now that I can afford it,I don’t have the energy to really enjoy it.

First, the authorities have launched an activity entitled “Build A Civilised City”.As for me,I begin with small changes, such as obeying traffic rules, using polite languages,no littering,no spitting, etc.I’ll manage my own behaviour and help people around me to form good habits.
Come on,friends.Take action right now!Do remember we can make a big difference if everyone does their bits.
That’s all.Thanks for listening!

Back at the apartment Grandma lay down for a nap.I sat in Grandpa’s armchair and opened the book. How right Grandma was!I was absorbed in the girl in the snow-covered Alps. She learns to love reading (like me)!Wasn’t that exactly what had happened to me She had heard my plea. She had changed my imagination from my fears to my best dreams. That book opened a whole new world,a world I’ve delighted in exploring.I began to love reading and I have got into the habit of reading a lot from then on.I’m always reading something, recommending something.
Twenty years ago my husband said,“You love books so much. Why don’t you write your own ” I did.And I’ve kept at it.So far,I’ve had more than 20 books published.Just like Grandma showed me that long-ago summer, there’s plenty to do.I just have to use my imagination.
